Red Sox to break bank for Teixeira

Here's a prediction: By the time this is over, win or lose, the Red Sox effectively will have made Mark Teixeira the largest contract offer in the history of your storied franchise. When the Sox want something enough, they make sure they get it. In the case of Teixeira, rest assured that the Sox want him, no matter what games are being played by club officials. Publicly and privately, the Sox are saying nothing about their interest in Teixeira and playing dumb every time his name comes up. It's as sure a sign as any that they are preparing to go to extraordinary lengths. what the Red Sox truly fear here is that the Yankees can outbid them on Teixeira, explaining why the Sox have failed to confirm any interest in the player at all. With the possible exception of the New York Mets, who just exercised their contract option on first baseman Carlos Delgado, the Yankees are the only team in baseball who could outbid the Red Sox for Teixeira's services. The Yankees could do it in a big way, too, giving Teixeira the kind of money that would put him in the clouds with Alex Rodriguez.

He'd have more fun in Boston.

Wow Cat.. you are up early....
I still think they don't want burnett. He seems to have been too fragile the last few years. I think they want Tex and possibly Lowe.. Should be a fun offseason as everyone and their brother will be predicting the moves.. (hmmm didnt I just do that?)

Never saw this headline coming...

So Tex is a selfish player and everyone wants him...take him.

as a yankee fan, i dont think we need texiera all that badly. and burnett scares the bejeezuz out of me. Give me CC and Lowe and a slim ray of hope for a Peavy deal and im a happy boy.

Geez AllStarz.... sour grapes?? So, when are the Yankees going to sign someone good? The headlines seem to have all the FAs going elsewhere..... Do the Steinbrenners have kids about to enter Yale, or something?....

Don't you just hate economic meltdowns?.... It alway impacts the top end of the market more than the bottom..... just like housing..... I'm still praying for a total Boras meltdown..... where he has to take one year contracts for all of his clients in late Feb..... it's happened before.....

Not many people have been signed yet, anywhere. If they go after FAs they are buying a WS, if they don't they are failures? Neither is accurate. I donlt mind the Yanks dumping boatloads of money on guys. But they should be good teamates and a history of reliability.

He was looking for a 3-4 year contract at $15M/yr for Maddux a few years ago. It didn't happen and he signed, I believe, for one year $8M (or so) with the Cubs...... it does happen..... although usually with older clients.... Teixiera is in his prime.... blowing this one would be like losing in poker with four kings.....

I do look forward to finding out whether to characterize the Yankees as total losers or money grubbing greed heads who buy championships..... it sets the tone nicely for the season.....

I found it both hilarious and disturbing. But on to the subject at hand ... this is just another example of the Red Sox trying to buy another World Series. I hope we buy ours before they buy theirs.

Let's hope Teixeira finds his way to Boston

November 20, 2008  08:38 AM ET

Morning guys ... JR, you better get busy on that theevilhim avatar before Bobby shows up. If he don't get to it first, he's gonna want your sloppy seconds in a hurry, I would think.

The Yankees have NO CHOICE but to back the Brinks truck up to the door and start unloading.Their farm system offers no immediate help............

No gairanteed help, but their arms in the minors are not without potential. They have been drafting well for a team with less picks. High risk, high reward. You are going to see the arms in the bullpen this year and it is possible we will see some starts from a few. From what I have seen there is potential there.

the Yankees are not that stupid. Tex does not light a candle to A-rod. even on a bad injury when A-rod the beast was injured he still put up better numbers than Texeira. and the truth is A-rod pays for his own salary. love him or hate him is the most recognized name in baseball, one of the biggest stars in sports, and as we have seen lately with all the Media attention on who he bones or dates a popular Icon. I woulnt even give Tex Miguel Cabrera money. so go ahead Sox over pay for that dude.
