While a contract offer might not be imminent for the former Blue Jays right-hander, the Red Sox do have interest in pitcher A.J. Burnett. Sox general manager Theo Epstein had a conversation with Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker, yesterday on the free agent pitcher, according to a major league source.

The Yankees will sign all three pitchers. They need them.

November 20, 2008  07:26 AM ET

All three? i thought there were a few more than three pitchers in the league.......

Sox won't sign him. they are trying to run up the price. They will get Lowe. Yanks will overbid on CC and I don't think CC will like Boston. Burnett I think is too hurt for Theo's taste over the last few years. Besides, including ego's, its hard to imagine anyone other than Lowe coming to Boston based on their current staff.

Yeah- Not like Boston isn't crowded already or anything...

The top money teams (i.e. the sox and yanks) play games with each other in order to force the other to pay more for what they want -- IMO, the sox don't want burnett, they just want to force the yanks to grossly overpay...

November 20, 2008  07:51 AM ET

Forget Burnett, let the Sox overpay for this one too.

Hey A Fact, don't you think the Red Sox are better off signing Lowe? He would make a perfect fourth starter for tghem, and Burnett is a fragile guy who, I think, had his best season in a contract year.

November 20, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Lowe would make a "perfect" fourth starter if he weren't asking for $16 million per.

November 20, 2008  09:37 AM ET

Boston is throwing around, or trying to, some serious coin. Who is worth it? In baseball terms, I mean none of them are worth it in "real" life.

November 20, 2008  09:42 AM ET

I think Teixeira is worth every penny he'll get. And probably CC too (although I don't like him for 5 or 6 years). Outside of those 2, I don't think any of the other "big names" are worth what they're going to get.

Lowe might be worth $16 million in the NL West, but not the AL East. And I just don't trust Burnett to stay healthy.

November 20, 2008  09:43 AM ET

If you look at the BoSox' rotation, there really isn't that much room for improvement. I think they might be going after Burnett to up the price for the Yanks. If they landed him it wouldn't really be a disappointment, but I believe that Teixeira would be a perfect fit in Boston. Move Youk to third and ship Lowell (doesn't have a no-trade clause) for more pitching. Hate the Red Sox but Tex deserves to be a superstar and that's a pretty good place to do it.

real life is relative, people get paid what their skills bear out in the market. The baseball market is a very unique one, flush with money caused by demand and advertising. but they are in a viscious circle now, though, because the players' union does everything it can to keep salaries rising, which makes advertising more expensive and ticket prices more expensive. the shock of the million dollar salry is going to seem like nothing a decade from now when someone signs the first half billion dollar contract.

I'm going to have to agree with you. Lowe is a proven, HEALTHY commodity whereas Burnett shows flashes of greatness between stints on the DL.

November 20, 2008  10:17 AM ET

I dont understand why teams would want to give a 5 or 6 year deal to burnett with his history of injuries.I think whoever signs him will deeply regret it in less than 2 years into his contract.

Lowe has BEEN a proven healthy guy-
the problem is he is not well into his mid 30's........

There is NO WAY you sign him to more than a 3 year deal
at this stage- ESPECIALLY if he's 'only' going to be your
4th or 5th starter.

Burnett I agree with you-
I would NOT break my bank for him....WAY too much injury
history AND he is already over 30

November 20, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Boston can have Burnett...way too fragile for anything more than 2 years. Hopefully (yeah, right) the Yankees have learned from their past experiences...Pavano, Wright, Brown, I could keep going.

And here's hoping they HAVEN'T learned.. lol.. I don't think Burnett will be there. He won't want to be a #3 or 4 starter even though, in the big sceme it doesn't mean anything. Plus, with the numbers that Epstien tends to crunch, he hasn't shown that he is consistently worth his money because of the injuries. Still say they sign Tex and Lowe. Lowe would be a great 3/4 starter and I think for the chance to pitch for a title contender, he will do it.

lol....

this will be the last 'big' deal he could sign due to his age.....
- if you believe he'll go back for a 'hometon' discount- you're
mistaken.....he AIN'T going anywhere on the cheap. PERIOD

November 20, 2008  11:44 AM ET

Yesterday it was the Yankees were bidding on or pursuing everyone so I guess today it is the Sox who are in on all the action in free agency.

November 20, 2008  11:52 AM ET

Ideal fit for Boston, more in his wheel house , doesn't have it for the "Worlds Biggest Stage in Baseball"
