Why BCS lobby disagrees with Obama

President-elect Barack Obama will solve the Middle East crisis before he solves the Bowl Championship Series. It was exciting, with all the woes in the world, that Obama would take time on "60 Minutes" to campaign for an eight-team playoff. BCS commissioners, knowing they have more power than the president elect on this issue, got a kick out of Obama's "60 Minutes" interview. The Pacific 10 and Big Ten conferences, which have been partnered with the Rose Bowl since 1947, have been staunchly opposed to any kind of playoff movement that would further diminish a game that was first played four years before the NCAA was founded. Obama doesn't understand school presidents didn't want a playoff last week and don't want one next week. He doesn't understand college football isn't interested in compromising the best regular season in sports with a postseason that could jeopardize a delicate bowl construct.

Comrade Barry has bigger fish to fry other than NCAA/ BCS playoff dilemma. ANd if he does get around to it, I am sure he'll want to spread the football talent wealth around to help other teams have the players to make it to the play off. USC should be very scared!

November 20, 2008  07:52 AM ET

The Big10 and Pac10 by coming to the BCS after the 1994 undefeated PSU team could not play for a NC, have already stepped away from that alliance. Otherwise USC and OSU would not have had a chance to play in the NC bowl. In these cases, other teams could be in the Rose bowl anyway.

They could have fixed matchups for the playoff bowls, like still have pac-10/big-10 play the first round in the Rose bowl. But if these teams are seeded as 1 & 2, this would not be desirable. So having the Rose and other big one, like in the BCS, rotate the final game, should make them happy.

Barack may be getting in over his head. Its hard enough taking on one corrupt organization (US politics). But another corrupt organization (BCS) at the same time? It'll be a cold day in hell (and in Southern California) before he wins this battle.

November 20, 2008  08:32 AM ET

If the NCAA has the power to ban college football programs from postseason play then the NCAA should have the power to take control of College Football and institute a playoff system like it does for the other 79 College sports.

of course they are going to disagree with OBAMA they are only concern in special interest. it not about the game anymore its about buddies from corporate america setting the stage in form of sponsorship and the presidents of these university are in bed with them and the corporate america has given them a STD ( still taking dollars) called greed. it does not take a harvard education to figure that out. they can extend the season beyond christmas vacation. by laws and procedures can be ammended. Yet they can not insulated themselves from the Ball State's , Boise States, etc... The critics say then you must play harder competition then you do then they say oh they had a bad year. the critics only want certain brands of football and the game is about competition not Bobby bowden, Not J-PA,Not Beamer ball. If they can make it fair I am all for it. BCS care nothing but about there bottom line, and has nothing to do with football....ask Auburn many years ago. I hope O uses his muscle to make this happen. john Mccain said something about makin one after the OState/ Mia game and we aint heard nothing back.....someone paid him to go away. If you dont believe it google it...he's on record saying he was going to make sure that there will be a system...what a crock.....Change is coming female dogs

November 20, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Thankfully gopro, the NCAA has no power whatsoever to do anything on their own other than punish teams for infractions. They would need unanimous support from every BCS conference (and Notre Dame) and several mid-majors to get even get the ball rolling and they will never get it. The Big Ten, Pac-10 and Notre Dame unanimously oppose it as do every mid-major conference as they have the most to lose from a playoff. Even if the college football hating crowd could get support of the conferences, they would then need support of the University presidents of which at least 100 of 119 are completely opposed, and for good reason. It is never going to happen. A playoff is not the right way to go for college football. Never has been, never will be.

I think Jamie C is a bit of an uninformed conspiracy theorists because there is not one shred of truth to that lengthy post.

INCSOC

who benefits...then. I have a degree and verse in fiscal responsibility. You like to believe that your on there team. Your a company man are you? How much did they get paid. How is it that every sport has a national championship series that includes everybody. You think it wrong for a kid sweat at East Carolina, or Tennesse Tech, or Boise state university not to have a chance to play. Those kids might get drafted and play for superbowl but not good enough with a 12-0 record to play in BCS game....didn't appalachee STATe and Boise STate tell fans about a heart of a champion. It about the game not your beloved traditions. YOU know that what your saying. As a former track athlete if the fastest man is from a smaller school guess what? he's the national champion. you want the same people. A little parity and the presecence of a cinderalla makes the game fun. It let people know that with hard work they can achieve. YOu think your teams past entitled them to be there. BCS could have ammended the guidelines but they look smug as if they accomplish something take money from fans in form of tickets and say no. No I know you pay to see the game but I am going to give you this. the fans are fed up. YOu have some testicles to say that there should not be a system. the world's most powerful man seems to agree with me INCSOC....lol....lol and its going to happen. Bless you.. CHANGE

November 20, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Forget about being a conspiracy theorist, you are just outright delusional. It's going to happen? LMAO! It is not going to happen, at least not in the next ten years, nor should it. You really need a reality check my man, the mid-majors have the most to lose. Do you like seeing East Carolina or Boise State getting a chance to take it to the big boys? If you do, you should not be in favor of a playoff and their opportunities will simply vanish with an eight team playoff. End of discussion.

51% of you people put this MARXIST DICTATOR into the white house . He also wants the Olympics in chicago to glorify his coronation to most high. It this time we still have the 1th amendment which is called freedom of speech.

November 20, 2008  09:35 AM ET

gopro I know things are not going so well with fulmer so I will forgive you for saying that Presdident O is over his head. He is obvious a fan of the sport. He's top of his class in Harvard Law, so designing a system would not be that hard being that he is now the standard says the people who voted for him. It is necessary to have some system to give everyone a chance for that trophy. We need what march madness had a Davidson or Butler Univ to get a USC unraveled ...an upset. That what people like to see. I should not be able to guess who in the BCS year after year. One would say hey they are dominant ...no your being insensitive to smaller programs. If we hve not learn in sports humble beginning can equal huge rewards. Usain Bolt training regime in Jamaica could be view as cavemanish= fastest man in the world. Tampa Bay Devil Rays inferior brand of baseball= world series and the rockies. YOu all so into brands and your teams that it take away from the spirit of the game. If this were a bible you would write in the beginning there was SEC, Big 10...and that not the case. Many of these smaller school produce great players...remember a guy name Jerry Rice, Steve Largent, and in basketball John Stockton. the fanatics only believe in there team and the BCS is only a popularity contest with a huge benefit...they are not doing it for free. The fans and your president has spoken. YOu aint got to like it.....lol

November 20, 2008  09:38 AM ET

thunderdragon you need some counseling. its over we are talking sports, but if you want to see sarah she working at Hooter now with her daughter. He is going to have a system devised and has said he would use some of his muscle to make it happen. Lighten up, go eat some chicken.......lol. I always feel great a big meal

November 20, 2008  09:45 AM ET

D. SLIQ your GED did not make you say that. this man was voted class president and the top of his class. to do that you must have an understanding of life as well as academics. American culture and sports have overlap. i am sure he's equipped to get a committee together to devised a solution. if W can wage war on steroid ands ignore the farmers whom use them on cattle and produce . we can live thru this....lol. YOU GUYS NEED TO STOP AND GET OVER IT...LOL

Which will happen first a BCS championship or an assassination attempt on Barack? That my friends would be a good TD.

November 20, 2008  09:59 AM ET

IM NOT DELUSIONAL. Boise State Univ has proven its METL. Ball State though it wont go to BCS will beat a Big 10 team. they will probably play someone in the top 15. I think they will man handle them. I guess during your adolescence you were easily beating when a taller, stronger opponent would out cheer you. Yet if you pick up your pom-poms you found out later hey that girl cant out cheer me. YOu try to disenfranchise the heart of a champion, and money means nothing. if that was the case Florida State would be there every year. Troy State, and Rice gave them a game. Not to say that they are the best of the best of cinderallas, but you are killing the dreams of men who deserve achance....achance. YOu love your teams so much that no one else deserves to play....that's a bias. I route for a bunch of teams...I enjoy the game...you enjoy your team.. it about the game. Ask any coach. so before you laugh and call me names no what I am about. You seem so shallow

Chasin' Utleys that last comment was not cool. believe me when i say this your now going to be listed for comments like that. you think it cool....its not

BCS Lobby disagrees with Obama? I didn't realize that was allowed. You wait until Tim "I don't know where to vote" Robbins hear this.

The BCS must be code for the KLAN.

Forget the war, forget the economy, forget health care reform and the million other problems left over from the Bush Admin - I am glad he has prioritized.

November 20, 2008  10:34 AM ET

Jamie C, do you really know anything about college football? Do you realize that your playoff dystopia will exclude all but the most special mid-major team by default, while taking a ton of money away from the lower bowl games and killing the exposure these smaller teams do get? Any eight team playoff would include the six BCS conference champions. Thinking other wise is just plain stupid, period. That would leave two spots. Do you really think the voters would allow a mid-major to take either of those spots (not that they would ever rise into position to do so anyway)? Everyone familiar with the economics of college football knows that the mid-majors (along with the bottom rung of the BCS conferences) are the ones that will pay the price. They will lose a lot of money and more importantly, the exposure needed to build their programs. The type of exposure Utah and Boise State have utilized to breathtaking results to build their teams up. Yes, these schools will likely never get a shot at a title, but with a playoff, they would not get a shot anyway.

Whoa! Calm down, Jamie. I don't need to get over it because I was on the winning side this time. I don't have a GED. Sorry, but they did give me a piece of paper with the words "Bachelors of Science" on it. But I was saying that I think changing the BCS is going to be tougher to change than US politics because the fans have no vote in the BCS. Obama identified with most of the country on the two issues, but fans have no input on the BCS system

You act like he has a committee for "College Football Playoffs". He's a fan like you. Do you not have an opinion as every fan does? "I guess Bush didn't know how to prioritize when he threw out the first pitch at a Nationals' game?" See, that statement I just made makes no logical sense.
