Flyers eyeing Bouwmeester?

All the struggles on the Philly defense have led to some fairly intense speculation that the Flyers may try to acquire soon-to-be-free agent defenseman Jay Bouwmeester from the Panthers. After scoring 15 goals and 37 points last year, Bouwmeester is off to a rough start (no goals, six assists) in Florida.

This makes a lot mre sense for the flyers, but they'll definitely have to give something good up to get him.

How about this LGP, they sign Shanny then trade him and some picks to Florida for Bouwmeester. Do you think this could be why they are chasing after Shanny so hard?

Could be...but do you think Florida management would be that stupid? Or that Shanny would go for it?

Shanny will want a no trade clause in return for a discounted salary. Hes not going to join a team just to be shipped off to someplace like Florida.

This would definitely make sense for Philly, but who do they give up?

I agree.

I couldn't see Shanny being up for that, and yes Florida managment is that stupid I believe. I would hope Shanny would get a no movement clause of some kind in any deal he would make for his bargain price.

Are they the only ones? Let the bidding begin! He'll fetch some nice coin for himself!

November 20, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Jesus, is there anyone Philly ISN'T trying to land? Next they'll be after Santa Claus as a backup goaltender, possibly starter. Philly Phans will love it so they can boo him again.

Seriously, this guy is going to be one of the hottest commodies at the trade deadline. Philly would have to knock Florida's socks of to get him now.

The Panthers will sit on him until closer to the trade deadline and then extract the biggest ransom possible for him. Unless .... of course .... somebody makes them an offer they can't refuse before then!

November 20, 2008  12:21 PM ET

Just get him out of Florida so he can prosper. He obviously doesn't want to be there, reluctantly accepting a ONE year deal. Most guys Jay's age don't accept one-year deals. It shows how desperate and pathetic the Panthers really are (though I'm a huge Jackets fan, so I don't know how much room I have to say this, but hey, the majority opinion is we're on the right track, but that's another story). No one can blame Bouwmeester for not wanting to be on a consistently horrible hockey team. I'm not a fan of the Flyers, but I'd like to see him in a market and team where he can fit in well and do much better. His potential will never be maximized in Florida.

If Shanny wanted to play in Floriduh ..... he'd be talking to them directly instead of going through Philly. And ..... if he signs with the Flyers, he'll probably want a "no trade" clause.

You're right. If I were Jacques Martin, I'd bite the bullet, realize the reserve of "one-year-ers" to offer Bouwmeester are exhausted, and just keep him up until the trade deadline to increase his market value and complete a rational trade. Now is too early, though for my fantasy team's sake I wish he would move (I hardly play him due to an abysmal plus/minus he gets skating with the rest of the Cats). Should be an interesting couple of months ahead.

Dork.

I guess the Flyers have a permanent scout in Florida because that is the only place they are looking for players.

November 20, 2008  01:25 PM ET

Bouwmeester's struggles may hurt his trade value come the deadline.....If the Flyers make a move.....I see UPSHALL, KUKKONEN, and possibly a 2nd & 4throunder going in the deal....I could see Holmgren asking for a minor minor leaguer to come back with Bouwmeester in the deal just to fill out the roster....Shanahan won't sign here for just to be traded hours later....that'd be stupid on Shanahan's part....Besides, I don't think players can be traded for a certain amount of time after they sign a 1-year contract....

Bouwmeester would certainly give us TWO solid defensive lines....Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, Matt Carle, and Jay Bouwmeester.....Then when Parent and Jones come back the defense would be alot better....Ditch Vaananen, Alberts, and let Sbisa learn more at the junior level....

If all Florida gets is Upshall, Kukkonen (whom philly released) and a 2nd or 4th rounder, it would be the steal of the century.

i'm still hoping for a gaborik (+ skoula) - bouwmeester ( + draft pick and young forward) trade. both teams get rid of the guy who's not gonna resign and who's trade value is pretty low at the moment...

Florida would never go for that because they know they will lose bouwmeester anyway and they have no chance to sign Gaborik so essentially they trade bouwmeester a draft pick and a young forward for skoula ... no way.

The Flyers would have to trade at least Kevin Marshall and Joffery Lupul plus a second rounder to land Bouwmeester. I don't see it happening, as much as I want it to, because the Flyers already acquired Carle so unless he really meesses up the Flyers won't want to make another addition so quickly. If Shanny gets signed give it a week or two and the Flyers will move a foward.
