Yankees not in ballpark for Lowe, Burnett

The Yankees have now called their three top pitching targets on their Quarter Billion Tour, with varying degrees of success. They successfully presented a $140-million, six-year offer to top target CC Sabathia, who's now looking around with no timetable in mind. "Comfortable,'' was how a friend described how Sabathia's current feeling. Comfortable, indeed. But at least Sabathia's agent, Greg Genske, took in the Yankees' bid without comment. The same can't be said for the other two cases. The Yankees intended to make four-year offers on A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe for about $14-15 million annually (in other words, close to $60 million each). However, Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker, is telling teams he's only considering five-year proposals, and Lowe's agent, Scott Boras, apparently also suggested the Yankees aren't in the ballpark.

Wow, I'm agreeing with a Boston fan, this crap is ludicrous!

The more injury prone, the longer the contract that will be demanded. That's the ugly math of free agency, and there will be suckers to take the bait.

If Boras says the "Yankees aren't in the ballpark" then that dumbass will eventually come to the realization that no one is. Good luck with that.

Not that I agree with it, I could see the Sox offering 5 years 60 mil total for Lowe. Prolly incentive laden... But Burnett? Man.. he would be lucky to give them 3 years worth of starts in 5 years. Definately not worth the money.

November 21, 2008  08:22 AM ET

Word on the street is that Lowe is looking for 16mil/year. Not sure how he figures he is going to get that amount. Burnett wants 5 years ...... but can't put together a solid season. Sox and Yankees aren't dumb ... yankees learned their mistake with Pavano (I would like to think) and the Sox don't just jump into that (see Pedro Martinez).

a contending team would pay for BOTH-
-for 2-3 years big $$ - it's worth it.
but not for 4+ years- that even for the Yanks is just bad business

especially burnett- a strong wind could land him o the DL

November 21, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Good, CC in the Bx, bring back Andy for a year or so.

Well then I guess noone is contending as I do not expect anyone to get both.

I wish the Yankees would tell Boros "thanks for letting us know we are not in your balpark. Since we arent in your ballpark we are dropping all interest in either player immediately. Fu(k your ballpark Boros."

November 21, 2008  09:45 AM ET

This is a lot of hearsay with no real evidence. Any agent worth his commission is going to try to get the max deal. No one is going to give Burnett 5 yrs at 15 mil. Both Lowe and Burnett won't flinch until C.C. makes a decision. If he takes the 140 mil or so from the Yankees, they can each ask for a little more. Nothing is going to happen for pitchers as long as C.C. is waiting.

November 21, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Agents like Boras are whats wrong with baseball!!!! All these players getting all this money that they dont deserve. Lowe is getting up there in age, Burnett can get hurt just walking up to the mound and even Sabatia has not proven himself in the playoffs. Yet there are going to be teams that will give them what they are asking for and most likely then not it will be the Yankees.

November 21, 2008  10:10 AM ET

You have to put a time limit on your offers..... like the Angels with Teixeira.... you have to give it your best shot and then move on..... you can't wait until February to know whether you have CC.... at that point, if you don't get him, everyone else you might have considered has already signed....

November 21, 2008  10:14 AM ET

I wish Boras "wasn't in the ballpark" he is killing the game. He wants a 5yr contract for Burnett. I wouldn't give him 5 week contract. Some team should be creative and sign him for 2 yrs guaranteed. And every year there after if he pitches a certain number of innings he meets his cap for that year. If not pro rate his salary. There is your 5 yrs Boris. Oh and the owners gets to opt out after 2 yrs :)
