Angels' Teixeira offer comes with deadline

The Angels' intend to make a quick-strike offer to their biggest winter target, star first baseman Mark Teixeira, which means a fair proposal with a deadline. The offer has not yet been made, and it's unclear when it will be or how much time Teixeira will have to respond, but the Angels used this method successfully last offseason to lock up Torii Hunter for $90-million on a five-year deal. But the stakes are even higher this time. Word is, Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, is using the $153.3-million, eight-year contract that Miguel Cabrera got from the Tigers before last season as a baseline for negotiations, and Boras makes the points that Teixeira is a leader and also a free agent (Cabrera had two years to go before free agency when he signed that Tigers deal). Teixeira is also drawing interest from the Nationals, Orioles, Red Sox, Mariners, Yankees and Giants, among others. One owner predicted Teixeira and CC Sabathia are two players who will get their price even in the worst economy since the Great Depression.

where will he end up...red sox, angels, yankees..its coming to a close now.

The Yankees - it appears...may not get Sabath-man, but they may very well land Texeria in the whopper of a move to bring closure on this issue.

These deadlines that the teams put on offers are stupid...Boras will not get forced into anything

Agreed, Yanks just sign this cancer and let's be done with it.

Teixeira was a 1998 ninth round draft pick of the Red Sox but opted to go to Georgia Tech. I will be shocked if the Sox dont land him this time around. With Moron Manny gone they really need another big bat to protect Big Papi. If they do sign him I assume the Fenway franks will go up at least a buck.

You know, the world does not revolve around the Yankees and Red Sox

Yes it does and always will.

Moron Manny

if Manny is a moron what does that make you?

These "contract deadline" stories are retarded. No company offers a contract on anything without a time after which the offer is void, baseball or not.

Here's a better rumor: Did anyone see Tex and Varitek hanging out on the sidelines of the Georgia Tech game last night? Let the rumors fly!

Cabrera is a better offensive player than Tex-
but regardless of that......
- in baseball you simply cannot 'lock' guys up for that long
when they have reall never done ANYTHING in the post-season
to warrant franchise $$$.

Baseball is about CLUTCH- Tex hasn't reqally shown that he is
- I'm not saying he ISN'T....just that he has nothing on his
resume that PROVES he is....he's played in ONE post-season series

You wont say it? I will. Texeira is not a clutch player at all. Hes alot like Afrod in that he puts up great numbers at the end of the season but so many of his production is done in meaningless at bats when the game is already over. You want a 2 HR game with 7 RBIS? He will give that to you but the score will be 10-2 in the 4th when he does it and the final score will be 19-4. Great game but so what type of stats.

He didn't have any HRs, sure, but he did hit .467 (with a .550 OBP) and scored 4 runs in the ALDS last year. The Sox couldn't get the guy out.

Yes, he only had 1 RBI in 4 games, but I think that's more the fault of his teammates not getting on base.

November 21, 2008  10:11 AM ET

And I'm not positive, but I seem to remember him either scoring or driving in a tying or go-ahead run in one of those games. I could be wrong, though.

November 21, 2008  10:15 AM ET

I think it's an ugly secret that most statistics are earned against the fourth and fifth line starting pitchers and the back end bullpen pitchers..... and that top RBI threats are pitched around in key situations.... so I wouldn't the line of reasoning about lack of clutch hits to dismiss Teixeira..... he's a presence to be reckoned with in the center of any lineup.....he's a patient hitter who gets on base a lot.... and he's a Gold Glove fielder.....

November 21, 2008  10:17 AM ET

If Tex was the only hitter on the market then this would be a foolish move but the Angels know that Manny is also out there so they can afford to put a deadline on a deal and if it expires they still have another option.
