Randy Wittman's coaching job is safe, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said. "If I worried about the short term, and I looked at the economy and all my companies, if I based things on that, then I'd fire all my presidents because they had a bad month," Taylor said. "I've been through ups and downs. You've got to be patient. I think Randy has prepared (the players) well. We've just got to get them some confidence. They're still young." The Timberwolves are 2-8 entering tonight's home game against the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics, who include former Wolves Kevin Garnett and Sam Cassell.

Stop lying, owner! Does that mean it's okay for the team to tank it this year? Ooops, they always tank it every year.

November 21, 2008  09:30 AM ET

so how do you win with a team full of maybes and no bodys.....is really the coaches fault

"If I worried about the short term, ........I've been through ups and downs. You've got to be patient"

Um- you have NOT been through 'ups' your Twolves team
has had ONE year that you made it through the 1st round
of the playoffs......your franchise is a JOKE.
you DO need to start firing your bball people

November 21, 2008  10:43 AM ET

They never should have dropped Flip. Or they should have given Casey more of a chance after hiring him. Canning him after a 20-20 start was unexplainable, especially after seeing what that same team has accomplished since then.

November 21, 2008  10:55 AM ET

Let's see what the owner says when he's 40 games in, and why didn't he use this logic with Casey? Hmmmmm.

November 21, 2008  11:05 AM ET

Whittens job is safe, what about McHale what has he done besides waist draft picks and drove Keven Garnett out of Minnesota, Kevin McHale should have been fired by now.

November 21, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Wittman better have U-Haul on speed dial. Usually the guarantee of your job by ownership is the kiss of death.

Timberwolves fans I think you being to hard on McHale. I think in a couple of years Minnesota will be a playoff contender because Jefferson is a top 15 player. I believe Miller and the other young players will get better. The trade of getting rid of Garnett was a great trade. First Garnett is getting old and before his departure he didn't accomplish nothing up there besides first round exits and the last two years not making the playoffs. Boston did that trade to keep Pierce happy but it was for the short-term because Allen, Pierce, and Garnett are in their 30's. I do not believe the Celtics are going to repeat anyway. Wolves are looking towards to the future and I believe Jefferson is more of an low post threat than Garnett will ever be.

lol....
I know they say it's 5:00 somewhere-
but you started drinking WAY too early

- The wolves have been a JOKE for years
- they 'might' be better in a few years- but that
is a MAJOR might- and in the west - they can't just be
a little better witht he young teams out there

Also if you think Al is better than KG.......see my above comment

re: too hard on mchale....as a minnesotan and wolves fan i disagree completely that we are too hard on mchale. he has been terrible. the problem is that mchale consistently makes bad personel decisions. that doesn't mean 100% of his moves have been bad---kg was a great draft choice and trading him was the right thing. but there have been so many bad decisions that minnesota never managed to capitalize on having a first tier hall of famer on the roster for 12 years. the list of bad draft picks, poor signings and released/traded players who go on to help other teams is just endless. most recent example.....wolves take mario chalmers in the second round, instantly trade him for a 2nd round pick next year. how often do you get a guy as good as chalmers in the second round? wolves are good for one or two of these kind of decisions per year. if mchale were not a native minnesotan he would have been canned years ago.

They got guys that can play. Miller, Jefferson, Love...

I just don't understand how Wittman's job is safe when the team, with virtually the same roster, has not only shown no signs of improvement from last season, but also has arguably regressed. And remember, the Wolves were .500 when Wittman took over for Casey in '07, only to stumble to a finish 12-30 under Wittman. Moreover, this is Wittman's second try at coaching a rebuilding team, and it should be clear by now that he is not the right coach for a team in such a situation. (Like the Wolves, the Cavs regressed during his two seasons at the helm in Cleveland.)

November 21, 2008  01:58 PM ET

Witt has never been a good coach, not with the Cavs and not here, he'll never win more than 35 games, ever.

McFail has passed on tons of talent over the years but decided to draft garbage like Ndubi Ebi and then swappin Roy for Foye, thats a JOKE. We do have 4 picks comin to us in this years draft (if Mia gets out of the lottery), so there def is hope.

November 21, 2008  02:16 PM ET

McHale had a chance to build a winning team around Garnett a super star, out of the 13 years of him being in the gm spot he manage to do it for one year and make it to the western conference finals, ever sense then nothing, Al Jefferson is a great player but he is no Garnett by far, His draft choices are terrible, Lets See Randy Foyde, Kevin Love over OJ Mayo, Cory Brewer the list goes on, the only great draft he made was Garnett, I say get rid of McHale and find somebody that wants to build a winning team, with the roster they have now even in the future they prob wont make the playoffs. How can you say we are hard on him, tell me something besides drafting Garnett and making it one year to the western conference finals that he has achieved. The Clippers got rid of there GM and the Timberwolves should follow their foot steps.

Miller, Jefferson, Love.... I wouldnt build a team around Miller and Love, Jefferson is great but he does not make his team mates better, Love is off to a rocky start and I dont see him being a big impact player in the league.

November 21, 2008  02:59 PM ET

Give McFail & the Wolves a mulligan on the '03, '05, & '06 drafts, and MN's starting lineup could very well be Brandon Roy at the point, Danny Granger (picked by Indiana after MN picked McCants) and Josh Howard (picked by Dallas after the Wolves picked Ebi) as swingmen, KG at the four, and just about any big guy in the middle.

November 21, 2008  03:18 PM ET

Wittman's job is safe...until he gets his arse canned that is.

November 21, 2008  03:57 PM ET

McHale is a Joke, he has made great draft picks but he keeps trading them away for players that he thinks are good. Come on, I'm not a Wolves fan but I feel bad for the franchise and the fans, trading brandon roy for randy foye and now O.J. Mayo for Kevin Love? Are you serious? Not to mention they let Billups walk away a while back. I don't really care who the coach is but they need to get rid of McHale because he has made some horrible choices and now the Minnesota fans are paying for it.

Nice work! You know your stuff

I give you people a great example the Lakers. When Mitch traded Shaq to Miami, many people said that Mitch was the worst GM in basketball. Yrs, he did make a mistake of trading Butler for the infamous Kwame Brown but look how the Lakers turn out. The young talent of the Lakers blossomed and now they are the team to beat now and in the future. By giving away Garnett, they got rid of a player they had little success with in the first place and they now got a young great core that can be a contender in a couple of years. Believe me Celtics got at least 2 years from this team because they were built in the short term. Minnesota is built for the future and it may pay off for them just like the Lakers.
