Multitalented free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal is being pursued by the Giants, A's, Dodgers and Cubs, with his former Braves team telling them they'd jump in if Yunel Escobar was included in a trade for San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy. Furcal had a very interesting platform year for the Dodgers before becoming a free agent. He missed four months with a back injury but came back in time for the postseason. He finished the year with a .357 batting average and .439 on-base percentage in 36 regular-season games. He batted .258 while playing in all eight of the Dodgers' playoff games.

Not sure how I feel about the possibility of letting Furcal go as a Dodgers fan. When healthy he can be really good but he also made a couple of big errors in the NLCS that Lowe couldn't shake. The Phillys when on to win that game and I think that error changed the series.

The Dodgers are full of talent in their farm system. If Furcal has to go, I'm sure they bring someone up that's just as good defensively.

You missed something then...

The only reason Beane would go after Furcal is to trade him for prospects at mid-season. He'll help them while he's there, but the second they fall out of contention, he;s gone.

I don't see why the Cubs would pursue him. They already have Ryan Theriot (not sure on the spelling?) at SS, and all i've heard is praise for him?!

This is a tough call. Furcal is as good as any shortstop in baseball when he's healthy. WHEN HE'S HEALTHY. He's been with the Dodgers for three seasons. If you add up all of his time on the DL in those three years, he's probably missed more than a full season.

Definitely Furcal matter.

The Dodgers need this guy more than they need Manny.

I disagree. The Dodgers weren't going anywhere until Manny came on board. If they don't retain Manny, then they need to find someone who can generate some offense. Nobody was hitting on that team until they got him.
