Notre Dame nixes students' recruiting plot

Manti Te'o, a Honolulu native and a prized linebacker recruit in the Class of 2009, will make a visit to Notre Dame this weekend. And the Irish had to take action to ensure Te'o can make a return trip if he so chooses. Notre Dame students hatched a plan to distribute about 8,000 leis outside Notre Dame Stadium at Saturday's game against Syracuse in honor of Te'o's visit, posting that plan on a fan Web site. The problem? A concerted, organized effort such as that could be construed as an NCAA violation in which Notre Dame is publicizing a recruit's visit to campus and encouraging that recruit to attend the school. Once the Notre Dame compliance office received a missive about the plan, it bid the idea aloha.

Why not just give him a tractor and a duffel bag with $25,000 in it like Ricky Roe in "Blue Chips"

Well I think this is the ONLY way Chunky Weis will be able to get lei-d.

Or make 8,000 leis with $100 bills instead of flowers.

Are you kidding, Jabba gets more action than Chamberlin.

Have you guys ever noticed that Charlie Weis looks like Sloth from "The Goonies"

November 21, 2008  07:44 AM ET

Utleys & GB, that's funny stuff. You guys are pretty creative at 6am.

Good try from the students. I'm sure Te'o heard about the idea. Would love to see him in Blue & Gold for the next four years!

This clearly puts Notre Dames desperation on display to the world.

I think it's disgraceful for any team to pass out 8,000 leis to attract a recruit.

If they sold each lei for $2,000 each, maybe they could buy out Charlie.

What can I say, Jabba is inspirational.

What a waste of T & R space...

November 21, 2008  09:29 AM ET

This is why Notre Dame is on top of recruiting in the past 2 years. The students at the games and the pep rallies make the recruits feel appreciated and welcome.

And no one else does this.

The rest of the college world burns their recruiting targets in effigy, spits on them, and steals their lunch money on the official visits, don't get me started on the UNofficials, brutal.

The problem comes when they land the recruit, bring him in, teach him nothing, he performs subpar, and the students show their appreciation by booing them.

They should have a hawaiian pig roast and roast fat boy. Watch for flare ups on the grill!...there's a high fat content

If this guy has a brain in his head... No way does he end up in South Bend... Unless of course.... His main concern is the chow

November 21, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Bring Mr. Manti from Hawaii to SB in late November, Fat Boy is brilliant. Its supposed to be md 30's nice weather for a Hawaii boy. Manti will be going to BYU or USC not the Tainted Dome. Fat boy will be gone after next season along with pretty boy flop specialist Clausen. ND is done as a premier team, they are a team of past success and thats all their fans have to hold on to.

If this guy has a brain in his head that is exactly why he ends up in South Bend. ND actually graduates their players (94%) unlike the whopping 54% (according to Nov 1, 2008 NCAA Graduation Report) that get degrees from your Trojan football factory.

"Jealousy, thy name is...NDSUCKS08." For a team that "is done as a premier team" you are amazingly fixated on them. You remind me of the guy in high school that got dumped by his "hot" girlfriend and then spent all his time telling anyone who would listen how much he always hated her. Therapy might help my young friend...

I do agree with you however that CW might be gone after 2009 if they don't get to a BCS bowl.
