Shaq reaches out to Phil

Phil Jackson stood in a dim hallway amid a semi-circle of reporters, talking about how difficult it is to box out Shaquille O'Neal, when the topic of discussion emerged from a nearby practice court, pushed his way through the media pack and gave Jackson a sweaty embrace. O'Neal whispered in Jackson's ear for a few seconds before walking away and saying, "You know I wouldn't do that to you." Jackson smiled briefly, a hint of catharsis in what had been an odd week of revisiting the O'Neal-Jackson-Kobe Bryant triangle leading up to Thursday's game between the Lakers and Phoenix Suns. O'Neal asserted last week in a Sacramento Bee story that the tension between Bryant and O'Neal earlier this decade was "all designed by Phil, because if you think about it, Phil never called us into the office and said, 'Both of you all, shut . . . up.'" A few seconds after the embrace from O'Neal, Jackson said he wanted to believe his former center.

Look man....Shaq is a cool dude, a funny man...far out and everything that one can conjure. For sure his wife is one good looking woman. Well Phil is just gonna have to do his thing.....if they wanna hug and give a little kiss on the cheek. I just dont know...

If you try to reach out to me I'll just cut your hand off

This is where i have problems with Shaq. How are you going to "talk tough" to Phil and then say "i wouldn't do that to you." i've heard that deep down he's very image conscious person which is why he rushed to do an interview with Jon Barry after Bill Walton belittled him for acting like he was hurt in Miami. I'm beginning to think Shaq is a politician. One minute he's saying things that make headlines the next he's apologizing to the same people behind closed doors to cover all his bets? Give me a break. If you were misquoted then say so, if not (which he wasn't) then you're phony.

Phil isn't stupid... He knows that Shaq tried to throw him under the bus... Shaq probably told him that they misconstrued is words... Whatever dude... Too little Too late...

Here we go again. Leave Shaq alone! Leave Shaq alone!

I believe all 3 are made up (okay) and only the fans now are trying to stir things up. I believe all 3 are sincere in bringing all these things to a closure. Whatever what was said in the past have truths to it but it's a good thing that they have all growned up and are ready to move on. Just remember at the beginning of the pre-season there were so many talks about Lamar Odom and a lot of Laker fans were ready to trade Odom. That was created by Phil stirring things up but it all worked out really well. Lakers fans were ready to tear the whole team apart after their meltdown in the Finals. I've said all alone to keep the team intact because now they have the unity and experience together which they didn't have years ago. This team is dangerous and are getting stronger and becoming to be a well oiled machine w/ so many interchangeable parts.

This story has been dead 4 or 5 years now. Is there anything to be gained by digging it up every now and then? This story has become about as boring as LA weather.

November 21, 2008  09:35 AM ET

This was all hype for what ended up being a pretty lackluster game. That rivalry is done. As evidenced last night, the Lakers are a far better team than the Suns with or without Shaq. Shaq addition to the team and the change in coaching has slowed the pace of their game down to the point where it's no longer fun to watch them

Shaq reaches out to Phil...and says puff puff give bro.

November 21, 2008  10:03 AM ET

What a bunch of nonsense. Think I'll go to the beach today...even though it's going to be a chilly 76 degrees this afternoon.

Well, at least Shaq is a "man". I think that's a Bond007 first.

As for the story, obviously Shaq said something and not matter how I try I can't rearrange the words (misconstrue the quote) in a way that puts Jackson in anything but a negative light.

He's choosing the high road after Shaq has once again said something controversial about him, I applaud that. I seriously doubt we'll see Shaq back in L.A. though.

It looks like he's just laying the ground work for a two year deal with the Lakers after his Suns deal expires.

I hope I'm wrong. I really do.

This lakers team is very very scary. I think if we continue this motivated pace, we can challenge Chicago's 72 wins in 1995-1996 season. By far we are the deepest team in basketball and the lakers defense is giving teams nightmares every night.

Hllywd, L.A. weather never gets boring. IT'S LOVELY IN LAKERLAND!!!

why are we still going on about this. This was done a long time ago and now we talk about it everyday. Shaq really just wants to get back on the Laker Bandwagon.

November 21, 2008  12:42 PM ET

i cant stand the fact that everyone blames shaq for everything that went down in la... shaq dont need either of them as we all can see. "u know how i be last week kobe couldnt do with me " lol

Shaq just needs to be the center of attention as much as he needs to work on his defense...which is to say A LOT. His retirement will be just as helpful to the League as his entance
