Arenas: Last place good for Wizards

Gilbert Arenas is already thinking about the possibility of a last-place finish for his Washington Wizards -- and finding the silver lining. With Arenas still working his way back from a third knee operation in 1 1/2 years, the Wizards are off to a 1-8 start heading into their game Friday against the Houston Rockets. "I don't want to see them struggle," Arenas said Thursday at Madame Tussauds, where his wax figure was unveiled, "but if this is one of those years where we don't make the playoffs or we finish in last place ... that's what happened to San Antonio and that's how they got Tim Duncan and look at them now ... and that's for the better." The Wizards haven't given a timetable for when their All-Star point guard might begin practicing or playing this season. He, though, now is targeting the start of 2009.

the wizards are in last place because of you. so just keep quiet agent zero. (if the wiz signed mo williams instead of you, theyd be so much better).

November 21, 2008  07:44 AM ET

He needs to shut up, but the reality is he's right. The wizards always make the playoffs so they never get a good draft pick, but they always get kicked out of the playoffs in the first round. With that "extra piece" they could be very formidable. But Gil you can't say that out loud.

He is such a punk

uhhh agent Zero, you don't have much choice but to look to 09'... I'm starting to think that he's gonna pull an Allen Houston and just suck the team $ dry...

Injuries are part of the game that's why teams buy insurance on the stupid contracts they give to players. That being said I concur with he said.

Numbers don't lie!

It is what it is. They will be better off tanking the season.

November 21, 2008  08:47 AM ET

He is just saying what he feels but it could be taken in a good way or bad way. It's bad because he is basically saying his team sucks and his teammates sucks. It's good because it's the truth and at the same time they have a better chance of getting Blake Griffin.

November 21, 2008  09:05 AM ET

I like this guys skill set, but I'm beginning to think he could be Allen Houston revisited.

November 21, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Arenas is a one season wonder....and perhaps one of the most overrated selfish players in the league right now.

November 21, 2008  09:19 AM ET

Even Donovan McNabb thinks Arenas is an idiot.

November 21, 2008  09:43 AM ET

He goes on my all- SHUT UP team......just ****

him, Stackhouse in the backcourt.
Shaq, Harrington in the frontcourt &
Karl coaching
(I gotta think about my other forward)

Agent Zero the GM forgot to mention there actually has to be some one worthy of the # 1 pick to help. Remember Andrew Bogut, or that Itallian in Toronto.

November 21, 2008  09:47 AM ET

I have to admit I used to love watching Arenas. He was so fun to watch but it all ended when he opened his mouth. The guy's the Kanye West of the NBA. He lacks absolutely no confidence and is just annoying now. He needs to focus on getting healthy and helping his team out as much as possible. I find it completely classless to purposely tank a season while making millions just to get a good draft pick.

You mean the Italian who lit up Michael Beasley for 25 on WED night? Bogut also had 16 points and 20 rebounds that same night agaisnt Utah. Maybe you should have gone with Kwame Brown and Olawakandi if you want to talk about pathetic busts.

November 21, 2008  10:17 AM ET

I like the guy's skill set, but I think we could be seeing the 2nd coming of Allen Houston.

Hmmm...sounds like he should play for the Celtics, since that was obviously what Ainge and Rivers purposely did a couple of years ago.

It's embarrassing this type of comments came from a max player.

November 21, 2008  11:06 AM ET

If there was a Tim Duncan type in the 2009 Draft, I wouldn't kill him for this statement but NBA analysts expect the upcoming draft to be the weakest ones we have seen in years.

November 21, 2008  11:07 AM ET

This is indeed starting to look like an Allan Houston type mistake. His knee wont be ready for the "cut, stop, start, cut, jump" of basketball for at least another year, if ever.

I said he'd get a max contract (because of his skills) and that Washington had to be sure about the knees before making the offer. Looks like they didn't do their homework. Too bad, he's starting to lend in the "never the same again" direction.

November 21, 2008  11:21 AM ET

All the money he "earned" has made him dillusional. Round of applause to Gilbert for single handedly destroying the Wizards franchise, well that isnt entirely fare after all some one had to sign the check, but why you would spend 100mil on an injury prone jackass is by me. What was wrong w/ waiting one more season and trying to land one of the big names that will be available. Arenas is sitting pretty spending all the money they are paying him knowing he was going to need another surgery. Maybe if someone clicks there hills in the wizards back office we will alll wake up and this will be a dream.

wow i misspelled alot of things words there ah well i declare fannation should add spell check.

At least Ainge and the Celts kept it on the down low. David Stern giving Arenas a fine for this statement isnt far fetched. "Tanking" is a word he wouldnt want anyone associated with the NBA to even suggest. This goes back to the integrity issue the League has passionately defended.

9 games into the season, regardless if your team is 1-8, suggesting to raise the white flag is just irresponsible. People pay hard earned money to see these games. And some airhead like Arenas runs his mouth with stuff like this. If Stern doesnt fine Arenas, the Wizards management should. They have a commitment to the League and the city they represent to put out their best effort.
