Beasley's defense costing him minutes

Heat rookie forward Michael Beasley has been reduced to a spectator in the fourth quarter of recent games. He has started in the 12 games and is averaging 30.2 minutes, but he sat for much of the fourth quarter in four of the past five games. As the Heat mounted a 17-point, second-half comeback during a 101-95 loss to the Raptors on Wednesday, Beasley watched. ''If I was the coach, I would have stayed with that lineup, too,'' Beasley said. Spoelstra continues to require youngsters such as Beasley to be accountable defensively. Beasley's defense continues to lag behind his offensive skills, but Spoelstra is pleased with his improvement.

He accepted responsibility, no jabs at the coach. What's the problem? All rookies have trouble adjusting defensively, give it time Beasley.

He'll get it... What are we, 10 games in?? Give him a little time.. He'll improve...

The problem here is him being content with the fourth quarter benching. That's a bad sign! I can only he does not evolve into a Curry named Eddy.

This is a very bad move for the coach. Even though Beasley does not mind the move, the coach basically just gave up on him and basically said I don't trust you in the 4th Qtr. If the coach continues to do that then I won't be surprise if there are tensions later on. I believe Beasley is not a liability on defense. He is a very good rebounder for his size. Don't tell me that everytime he is on the court, the opposing team will go at him and take advantage of him. That does not happen. There are other plays that teams run and it's not always against a forward. So whatever excuse the coach made is bull crap.

It's the coach's responsibility to field the team that gives them the best opportunity to win. Beasley must learn to play both ends. They cannot afford to have a defensive liability on the floor with the game hanging in the balance.

wait, wha??? no, this can't be. too many scouts said rose was a bad #1 and Beez was the better pick. i'm shocked those experts were wrong considering what Rose is doing in chitown.

and he doesn't play D? wow, shocker...since everybody already knew that before he was drafted. let the kid play, thats why you drafted him(albeit not wanting to) #2 overall. if you take the kid out in IMPORTANT situations...whats that say? yeah uh, you're not good enough. thats a confidence booster. the ONLY way the kid is going to get better playing defense is...guess what? playing defense! what better time than in the most important time of the game? unless you're a championship caliber team(the heat aren't, sorry) then its better to gear for the long term. sitting your prize rookie in the 4th is stupid. good luck with that down the road when he loses interest in team philosophy and wants to be traded

November 21, 2008  09:31 AM ET

Be Easy Beasley you will get it bra!

November 21, 2008  09:39 AM ET

The defense is a big factor....

But he is a PIG/balck hole offensively-
the Heat have Wade who takes all the shots in the 4th
- they don't 'need' his scoring on the floor-
so if he's not involved offensively and not rebounding/
playing D...he is useless

November 21, 2008  09:41 AM ET

He really needs to be playing the 3.

He's a rookie who was picked for his offense, not his defense.

I'm sure he wants to be in there in the fourth quarter, therfore, he'll work on his D in practice and the off season. If he really wants to be "the best ever" as he claims, he'll get better on the defensive end of the floor over time.

You are correct my brotha...plus he is playing against guys that are at his skill level or better and its gonna take a little time to adjust to the speed of playing pro...given a little time, this kid WILL be a beast!!

I like the fact he took accountability. It shows maturity on his part. His defense will come. It's only been a handful of games, so give him time.

WOW just WOW...if he complained people would say things like "shut up rook, it's the coaches decision" or something to that effect...he man'd up took it for what it is/was and is still criticized...people can't win for losing...it's not like he was touted as a lockdown defender coming in...can we get to 20 games (1/4 of the season) first?

I agree it's early....and he will get better-
infact I actually think he's doing a little better than I expected

But he WAS touted for his rebounding
he's only getting 5.5 a game.....
which IS in Eddy Curry country.

November 21, 2008  12:02 PM ET

I don't think B Easy will get it...he walks out on the court like he's in dream land...See Wade was also quiet as a rookie, but he let his play show his ambition. Beasley is toooo relaxed to the point he seems not to give much effort or to even care. See the game used to come easy for him, but what happens when it's not coming easy so he could walk around like he was in dream land, but now he needs to get a fire in him...Like Haslem...doesn't have as much athleticism, but he does have fire, so does Wade...they don't walk around out there like 'ok if i do, ok if i don't'...one important note someone made earlier...the scary thing is again, he doesn't seem fazed by it...and he should be pissed or come out on the floor with a fire when he is on the floor...he should see how people are calling him a bust already (he will be ok, but he was supposed to be great, but it's Rose and Mayo, not him) and go out there and try to prove them wrong. I wish we had gotten Rose now...or Mayo...

November 21, 2008  12:10 PM ET

two important notes:

1) The first year of a super stars career is when he's always taking the ball to the hole and dunking...he feels invincible...(remember Carter, Wade, Bron, Jordan, Derrick ROSE, etc..) then they slow down on that and learn to shoot from outside and newer moves as to prolong their career...the longer you're in the less dunking...cept maybe centers. Problem is Beasley doesn't take the ball to the hoop now. he seems at best like he will be a softy like Webber...

2) He was talking about how he would be MVP instead of just Rookie of Year...hmmm...I'm supremely disappointed...what a joke...i watch the games...people are still trying to act like he's doing good this year, but he's supremely underachieving...but maybe that may be because the power forward position is one of the better one's in the NBA with the likes of Garnett, Brand, Odom, Wallace, etc...but still i thought he would be doing what Rose is doing...

November 21, 2008  12:37 PM ET

Of course NBA guys are going to school the Rookie, it always happens.

Of course NBA guys will school a rookie, but exception rookies don't get schooled...Lebron, Wade didn't, Rose, Mayo aren't, and Beasley was supposed to be one of these exception rookies...and unfortunately, but I think Webber (big softy) even started stronger than Beasley...And Beasley's 'No Fire in him' nonchalant look on the court doesn't seem to give any indication that he will get that spark that greats have...Wade Has it, Kobe, Jordan, Pippen, Morning, Shaq, Lebron, and I'm seeing it in Rose amongst other players have 'IT'...it being a confidence ALONG with the will to win, the ability to turn it on regardless of who they are playing....Beasley doesn't seem to have it...he's better than kwame brown, but i think if he doesn't fix it, he may be a bigger bust than Kwame...he has higher expectations...just as Tim Thomas is considered a bust though he's not completely useless like say a Kwame...
