Knicks: Curry lacks desire

Eddy Curry pedaled on a stationary bike in cool-down speed, watching teammates run up and down the floor in a scrimmage. The 6-11, 300-pound center got off the bike, plodded down the sideline with a slight limp and headed toward a back door that leads to the Knicks' locker room at the MSG Training Center. Curry, who has a "sore right knee," according to the team, has not practiced in more than two weeks and hasn't played in a game this season. That trend will continue when the Knicks (6-5) visit the Bucks tonight. There has been frustration within the organization that Curry is not pushing himself hard enough to get back on the court. A person with intimate knowledge of the situation noted "lack of desire." Two other sources agreed. Curry, according to one source, has been warned and has since picked up the effort level. Mike D'Antoni said that even in his up-tempo approach, the team could use Curry's size and that Curry "can really make us good." But the coach would not deny conditioning is an issue.

maybe it's just me, but didn't D'Antoni take Curry out of the rotation before the season started? Now he can all of a sudden play such an integral role?? Whatever!!!!

His size helps especially on defense. I saw it when he played in a preseason game Boston. But heck the guy is 300 pounds - he couldn't last five minutes.

I don't know if I should feel bad for his wife or his career.

Actually he is horrible on defense and cannot block a shot. But he would be good target inside when the outside shots are not falling. His deisre has always been an issue. Shaq ran with the D'Anotoni offense last year, so Curry can if he tries.

November 21, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Wow, is that new news? The other problem is that coaches stop coaching this guy and basically quit on him. It's still the coaches job to get this guy prepared. That's why all teams have a million coaches. They have coaches for free throws, defense, strength training, low post, high post, jump shooters, etc.

November 21, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Curry is worthless. He hasn't practiced, and hasn't played all year? Has it occured to anyone that his knees are hurting from carrying his fat arse around. One's knees are not suppose to have to haul freight. Fat people ALWAYS have knee problems. It's only a matter of time before he eats his way back to Illinois.

Agreed on all counts.

- big problem is you can't teach heart-

He should not be 'rewarded' with minutes if he is not
giving max effort in rehab/pre-season &/or practice....
he has done nothing in his career to warrant a 'pass'

November 21, 2008  09:49 AM ET

The Shaq syndrome.

November 21, 2008  09:50 AM ET

Curry doesn't give a **** about sitting on the bench doing nothing as long as he's getting paid. He has absolutely zero desire which is ridiculous because the guy could be a serviceable center on most teams if he just gave a damn.

November 21, 2008  09:53 AM ET

Newflash!!!!!!!

Eddy Curry's motivation left the building after he signed his last contract. Once his rookie contract was done and he got his new deal he was destined for DNPville. Why sweat when you earn the same money to sit courtside w/ DNP coach's decisionbury. Thank God he has Steph to mentor him on how to swallow his shame, cash that check and do nothing.

Have you never watched him play a game or what? He could help on defense? Maybe if he was guarding CHuck Nevitt of George Muresan but not anyone else. This guy couldnt guard Ray Charles.

I don't care what anyone says you can't pull the wool over Dolan's eyes. This took you only how many season to figure out jack arse

November 21, 2008  10:22 AM ET

I believe Curry never wanted to be a basketball player. His motivation to be a professional basketball player may stem from the fact that he would have more elaborate spreads to eat from rather than help his team win. If you cannot get motivated in NY, where can you be motivated?

November 21, 2008  10:27 AM ET

I believe Curry never had the motivation to be an effective professional basketball player. His motivation may have been to use the NBA to get to all the elaborate food spreads around the league. If you can't get motivated to play well in NYC, where can you get motivated?

lol -

not sure why you're going after Dolan for this.....
all Dolan has EVER done is willingly spend $$$
that is EXACTLY what you want your owner to do-
spend and keep OUT of the business.

His problem is he hired AWFUL GM's-
from Layden> Isiah & we'll see about Walsh.

Curry was 100% Isiah.

November 21, 2008  10:48 AM ET

JGB..... I agree Dolan does want to spend and make the team better with other peoples money(thanks Chuck). His problem is he never surrounded himself with good basketball people. So it comes down to him for hiring the wrong people. Isiah/Dolan are like the soon to be ex prez they were given an important job and they failed bigtime. And we will be feeling the effects for years to come.

November 21, 2008  11:00 AM ET

Curry just doesn't want to be in NY anymore and it shows.

He's just sitting around waiting to be traded.

November 21, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Funny, I have been saying that for years. I have been saying that on this website for over a year and the Knicks finally figure this out?

Shoot just make me GM now. I'll take a price cut.

November 21, 2008  11:14 AM ET

tHATS NOT THE ONLY THING HE LACKS

November 21, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Bring back Ewing Jr., even if he will never be as good as his dad. I know he will play ever min. like it was his last. We need hard workers on the court to push teammates to the next level.Curry should be waived before Stephon if you asked me....

Good observation. Although Curry is a poor individual defender, not much of a rebounder or shot-blocker, and demonstrates poor recognition, the presence of his girth did make a difference that game. But I don't think it would help against every team.

We all always knew Curry is unmotivated, or he would have slimmed down years ago. Their trainers must be overpaid and unmotivated also, since they would dictate his daily regimen.
