Roy ceremony has competition

If you want to catch the full flavour of tomorrow night's ceremony at the Bell Centre to retire Patrick Roy's No. 33, keep your television sets tuned to RDS. The CBC is offering coverage of the event, but Roy has to share the public broadcaster's spotlight with Wendel Clark, who is being honoured in Toronto. You would think that Canada's two best-known hockey franchises could have coordinated the ceremonies so that they didn't conflict. While we're on the subject, we can only hope that the CBC's resident gadfly, Don Cherry, pays Roy a compliment by pronouncing his name correctly. Then again, I just finished reading Don Cherry's Hockey Stories and Stuff and Canada's worst-dressed man said he gets a kick out of mispronouncing names.

I love Wendel and will be there tomorrow night for his number raising ceremony. But even as a Leaf fan, I'm fascinated that he's somehow been elevated to compete for the air time of one of the all time greats and a hall of famer. Only in Toronto. Oh, and in Don Cherry's world...

Maybe Roy and Wendel could fight it out at neutral site? It would be a good one.

A good one? Roy would break down crying at even mentioning fighting Wendel Clark.

Montreal has a half hour-long ceremony every week for some by-gone player, coach or administrator... can't blame the Leafs for this one. The Habs look for any excuse to parade out past glories. I am surprised they haven't pulled the Rocket's cadaver out and put on display at centre ice yet....

Do you think Roy will be wearing his Avalanche jersey?

So you never saw Pat Roy fight? Your loss. He could toss them.

November 21, 2008  01:49 PM ET

And I'm not saying he'd have beaten Wendel, you fought Wendel you bled.

But I'd watch the fight.

Yeah, but that's only because they HAVE people to honour. Wendel was all heart and hustle sure, but Patrick Roy is the game's all time winningest goalie with a couple of cup rings. Montreal gets filet mignon Saturday night, us in Toronto will be eating comfort food.

Que viva Wendel Clark!!! Que viva Patrick Roy!!! Que viva el Don Cherry, even if he can't say Patrick Rooah!!! Cheers all around!!! Well deserved!!!

November 21, 2008  03:51 PM ET

Roy maybe the winningest goalie but that is because Brodeur is injured or you couldn't say that! Roy is a disgrace off the ice as a man ,husband and father and as for fighting I'd like to see Vernon take his head off again like he did when he was 40!!! Roy would only fight Clark if he was chained to the other net and didn't move ,kinda like the way he taught his son to fight! Roy BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! If it weren't for the teams in front of him except in 86 Roy would have a record more like the Beezer!

Apparently someone hasn't watched a whole lot of hockey. Marty had some defensive juggernauts in front of him most of his career. He probably still would have broken Patty's records, but probably not as quick. You should get a clue before spouting off there kingeraaa. Especially in the hockey threads. Otherwise most of these guys will put your helmet back on you and put you back on the bus.

November 21, 2008  09:48 PM ET

I watch mostly western hockey. BUT I can tell you both Brodeur and Roy are awesome. Neither is better. Different. Add Sawchuck and you would have the trinity of goaltenders. So stop the comparison kingraaa, Spiny and these guys are right. Learn something before spouting off.

Wendel Clark is one of the main Reasons I became a leafs Fan. (That and I think my dad made me)

November 22, 2008  05:59 AM ET

Why did he retire after the Wild came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat him in the playoffs in 2003? My boss who never watched hockey, only Sports Center, mentioned it and knew how to pronounce Roy properly so I knew he'd been paying attention. Yeah, Roy is a stud!

November 22, 2008  08:02 AM ET

kingeraaa = LOSER

November 22, 2008  10:21 AM ET

kingeraaa.........dude as much as I hate patrick you gotta give him credit for being a great goaltender (omg did I just say something good about a AV?)

don't spout crap here or everyone will just make you look even more of a fool than you already appear to be
