A wild day of trading for Knicks

The Knicks completed a wild day of trading on Friday when they sent Zach Randolph and Mardy Collins to the Clippers for Tim Thomas and Cuttino Mobley. The deal comes less than two hours after Donnie Walsh traded Jamal Crawford to the Warriors for Al Harrington. Both deals were made to clear salary cap space for the summer of 2010 for when LeBron James becomes a free agent. The contracts of Harrington, Thomas and Mobley all expire in two years which will put the Knicks in position to make a run at James, the most coveted free agent since Shaquille O'Neal left the Orlando Magic to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.

They can only get better. Didn't they start like 1-7?

What happens if the Cavs win a championship before then and LeBron stays? There's no guarantee here except LeBron wants to play on a team capable of winning the championship.

November 21, 2008  04:54 PM ET

A couple problems for the Knicks new masterminds - 1) Do they expect fans to continue to buy tickets for two more years on the chance that LeBron might come to New York? 2) LeBron is not going to want to come to a team devoid of talent. He is going to want to go to a team where he thinks he can win a championship. Every team in the league is going to want to sign him, the money will be the same wherever he goes, the winner of the sweepstakes will be the team that has the best players to complement LeBron. At the moment the Knicks have ZERO talent, having just dumped their highest scoring player. Perhaps this is all part of a plan to take a dive into the lottery, but judging by the first pick of the D'Antoni/Walsh era, Danilo Gallinari, it doesn't matter where they draft. This team remains a disaster.

So wait, now the Clippers have 3 starting Centers when Kaman comes back? Perfect!

November 21, 2008  04:59 PM ET

Kaman is going going gone....

November 21, 2008  05:02 PM ET

Absolutely crap. Gut the team, then sit back and blow your brains out when Lebron doesn't come in 2010. and really, where are you gonna be if he does decide to come? any better? Yeah, right. Yeah, Gallinari will fit right in with him.

November 21, 2008  05:02 PM ET

Wow, I understand what the Knicks are doing. I always said there is not rebuilding in NY. Other have said the same.

Let's see how the main level takes this new team.

November 21, 2008  05:05 PM ET

I would like to play joker with the Knicks brass. James better come!!!

I think the Knick could have Gotten Jordan in this.

Perhaps you are unaware of the start that Wilson Chandler is off to, and the fact that Al Herrington is now on his way over. Zach Randolph was never going to be there so way this comes as a surprise is bewildering.

They now have a chance to two free agents.. It's easy to see why someone would have mixed feelings, but we had mitigate the risk of Randolph getting hurt..

It's funny all anyone ever wanted was to get under the cap and keep out young nucleus. Now that Randolph has played well for 10 games it's not a good move to trade him.

The other thing is I will still be a Knicks fan, but I will not need to see every game as the Knicks told me we are building for what happens in 2010. We are not worried about wins for the next 2 years,

November 21, 2008  05:18 PM ET

Let me be clear! I need to understand what direction my team is going in. The direction is clear, so I hope they are right.

The only problem is my team has just toll me, we are going through the motions until 2010!

Ok, if you want a mediocre team for the next couple of year then yes your point is valid. If you want to have an opportunity to be a GREAT team by signing two of the NBA's franchise players then this move makes complete sense. I just can't see how flexibility and options can eve be a bad thing.

We now get to see more of players like Lee, Robinson, Chandler, Jeffries, and Q. I am also excited to see what Harrington can do in our new system and with long athletic team.

November 21, 2008  05:34 PM ET

The season is about competing. My team just said "don't worry about the next 2 years"

November 21, 2008  05:38 PM ET

Only one team will be able to sign Lebron, so Knicks, Nets, Cavs, Mavs, Lakers, etc. I suggest you conduct your business with the intent of putting a winning team on the court right now. That's exactly what you owe the fans that you raise ticket prices on every year and charge outrageous fees for food and souvenirs. Otherwise we'll all stay home and start looking to 2010 ourselves.

November 21, 2008  05:41 PM ET

yessssssssssssss.... i hate crawford.... hes statistically the biggest loser in nba histry....thanks doniie for understanding at some point we wage war against rather than alongside the cap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AnD u got rid of z bo who shots 42% and this means d lee stays and u got rid of the worst offensive player ever for dantonis system in collins. YeaHHHH YEah hhh ahahaha huhh woooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly.....There is NO guarantee LBJ will go to the Knicks. Don't put all your eggs in that basket Donnie

This isnt just a run at Lebron.. The knicks will probably try to get offers out to a couple of stars to come to NY.. like maybe Wade and Bosh.. who knows.. 2010 will be a good year for a team with cap space.

You're right. The Knicks have put themselves in a position to take on two top players in 2010. I'd like to see Lebron stay in Cleveland but I think he wants to play in N.Y. There is rumor that Amare Stoudamire might want out of Phoenix so he might be another player they could aquire. I think Knick fans will pay to see a struggling team for a few years. When the Knicks finally get a good team those tickets will be hard to come by.
