Red Sox, Yanks fighting over Lowe, too

There's been a lot of newspaper space (and some Web space, as well) dedicated to a potential battle between the archrival Red Sox and Yankees for free agent pitcher A.J. Burnett. But it appears much more likely that the real skirmish between these two hated rivals will be over another free-agent pitcher, Derek Lowe, who is cited by many baseball executives for becoming even more focused in his years out in Los Angeles. Like Burnett, Lowe may want at least a five-year deal, and at 35, that's certainly no certainty. But he is drawing interest from a long list of teams, including the Mets, Braves, Phillies, Giants, Mariners and Dodgers. Lowe is believed to prefer a move back East, where he appreciated the extra intensity when he played for the Red Sox from 1997-2004.

Lowe has always wanted to come back to Boston. He may take less than what other teams offer.

Brian here is what you do make an offer for Lowe and wait until Epstein makes a counter offer, then maybe throw out another one slightly higher than the Sox offer and then when Eppy throws out the bigger offer just walk away. and see if Eppy signs his name on the dotted line or not. Bet you he doesn't. Do not go after Lowe. He is had his glory years and this would be a much worse signing than if the Yanks took Pettitte back for an 8 mil two year contract. Both are not worth it but Lowe is worth a lot less, especially at five years!

C'mon five years at 35! Not too realistic! Who's his agent? Boras?

this is his last major deal-
he AIN'T coming on the cheap ANYWHERE

- no way I would give him 4 OR 5 years.
he has been solid- health wise- but is now
in his LATE 30's.... normal non-roid people start to break down
bad business to give him that much length

Man, if the Sox do sign him, I really hope they can get a Lowe they can count on. When he was in Boston, he could only pitch well with little or no expectations. He was really good at middle relief, then he turned into an awesome closer. They figured they could count on him, so didn't pursue a closer, and he flamed out QUICK. They converted him to a starter not expecting too much, and he was a Cy Young candidate. So, they didn't pursue another top of the rotation starter. What happened? He was average the next year. They counted on him being average and what did they get? One of the WORST pitchers in all of baseball. He wasn't even exceptionally good in his years in LA....his ERA always looked decent, until you factor in that he was regularly amongst the league leaders in unearned runs allowed....compare his stats to Jeff Weaver's in LA, and use Total Runs instead of Earned Runs (considering they played in front of the same Defense).....they were almost identical.

He is drawing interest at 35. He wants 5 years. Ground ball pitcher. Problem with Lowe when his ball consistently moves laterally instead of down can get knocked around, like most ground ball guys. Worrying about whether or not he has his 'good stuff' today for 5 years then at 40? Three year deal for less money maybe. But yanks and sox can match him out of their own roster without spending as much. Same goes with Burnett. Five years? He had what a couple of injury free years in his career. Most of the injury years had to do with his arm? Like what for 10 years or so? Now in his walking year he's awesome and he and his agent wants another 5 year deal for $ 80 million or more? No I have my reservations. Look to CC yes, and then to a trade for Peavy with an up grade to his contract/extension, yes. If they stay in the NL, well then OK, but go after them and show them alot of confidence with your money offers. If either of these teams can not get them and they have have to fall back on these other two? It will be fingers crossed, but I guess I'd go with Burnett to the yanks and lowe to the red sox.

One, you should NOT be allowed anywhere near the internet. Two, concerning Lowe...you're a moron!

I don't believe the Red Sox even offered Lowe a contract in his walk year. He was pissed at management, particulary Terry Francona, almost the entire year. And he also had to many personal (affairs) for their liking. Now that being said I say bring it on! I would love to have him back.

I just hate the waiting game lol serious lowe to the sox CC and sheets to the yanks burnett somewhere

November 22, 2008  01:06 PM ET

Five years for someone 35 years old is just stupid..... those last two years (at least) will be painful..... leave it to the Yankees to take on a contract like that.....they have a "waste of space" slot available with Pavano gone....

November 22, 2008  01:14 PM ET

elccpa24, Well....that was a brilliant retort. Any chance you'd like you actually form a counter-point argument?

On The nose my friend

Lets see what happens when Lowe comes back to the AL. He was average at best back then. Why is his considered a jewel of a FA. Pitching aginst the NL West is not somthing to get exctied about.

November 22, 2008  04:43 PM ET

the guy is a gamer, knows how to win, would be an asset to the rotation

November 22, 2008  04:50 PM ET

I don't understand why clubs would pay big bucks for mediocracy. He's an inning-eating 4th starter (at best) on either the Yankees or Red Sox. Well, I guess if you're going to pay a 35 year old $16 million per year, at least it's one who recieved a Cy Young vote this past season.... oh wait, he didn't. Braves: stay away!
