Goodell: NFL fears economic squeeze

As much as NFL teams are feeling a financial squeeze already, commissioner Roger Goodell fears the economic downturn really could hit the league in early 2009, when tickets for next season go on sale. "There's no secret on sponsorship, advertising, licensing -- those numbers are going to be impacted by the current climate. We're aware of that," Goodell said in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday. "We're still, unfortunately, in the beginning stages of this. And most of our tickets are sold in the spring. And so '09 is going to be more of a barometer of how impactful the economic environment's going to be on the NFL."

Barrack will have everything cleaned up by February or March.New houses and cars and season tickets for all. What are you worried about?

November 22, 2008  08:15 AM ET

really its the economy? not the 20000 PSL's or the 100.00-200.00 ticket prices? or even the directtv football package that got jacked up another 100.00 bucks this year (if you want to see the games in HD).

really rodger, you need to come down from the mountain once in awhile.

Have to agree with you. Regardless, the stadiums will be full, the tv contracts are in place and the money will still flow the same way..Most teams only have eight home games. It is baseball that will feel it.

Yeah, for the first time in 4 years, i left Direct TV and went with my local TV/Internet and Phone people (Verizon) to give me cable and everything else. I loved having that damn Ticket and didn't think I'd be able to pull the trigger when it came to switching, but the deal was too good. Love the cable I have now but miss the Ticket like crazy. But when they raised that price again I was done. $350 to watch all my games this year?? Are you kidding me! On top of my normal direct tv monthly bill?? That's my kids' Christmas money right there.

Now with Verizon, I have more channels and just watch the games throughout the week on the NFL network. I save like $147+ per month

I hate the NFL Network. It bans me from Thursday night games.

I'll never give into your greedy demands Goodell. You crook! I wish Paul Tagliabue was back.

November 22, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Well! I am relieved to see that Goodell has finally come around to acknowledging that there is an ongoing financial crisis! Will the palyers take that into consideration when it's time to renegotiate contracts? Will teams acknowledge that reality and lower their tickets prices? Prices of beer and hot dogs and parking?

And personal limo service for those who do not own a car! Que viva Barry!

I used to hate the NFL Network games, but I now catch them on NFL.COM

Better than TV. You can select camera angles, endzone cam, hover cam, Plus no commercials.

November 22, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Hey Goodell, how about you operate like an actual business for once instead of the monopoly that you are? You know...that means dropping your prices when demand decreases. When's the last time anyone saw prices associated with NFL games or merchandise GO DOWN instead of GOING UP?

November 22, 2008  10:55 AM ET

Nothing like the unemployment rate going up to impact ticket sales......

November 22, 2008  11:45 AM ET

Will Ford and GM be able to afford any advertising if the get a bailout or go bankrupt?

November 22, 2008  12:21 PM ET

The recession is hard on all of us. No one wants to hear a wealthy sports commissioner cry about ticket sales.

November 22, 2008  01:17 PM ET

OK.... I'm dating myself a Tad.... but I used to get NFL (LA Rams) season tickets for about $250 each, for decent seats.... I realize those prices have gone up, but $350 to watch games on TV?? Wow!..... I also was interested in a Falcons game recently..... all that was left was $120 tickets that were not that good (and I believe the Falcons tickets are cheaper than most).... TIVO worked out much nicer..... free and I could watch it later in the day....and skip the tedious TV timeouts.....

Well said BigBlue. It's not like the NFL couldn't afford a price reduction. Hell, it would probably gain in popularity if it did that.

November 22, 2008  02:08 PM ET

Wow! My heart really goes out to you Goodell. It must be a scary thought that you might be a little less rich next year. But dont fret too much. Being that you have already priced out most commoners with club seats, PSLs, and luxery boxes. I dont think you will be impacted that much.

November 22, 2008  02:21 PM ET

Maybe if he realiozed that his product isn't as salable as before all the street thugs took over he might figure out the problem

November 22, 2008  04:53 PM ET

Oh, my friends....the economy will get worse. And the price of gas will rise again......Obama or whomever.....these are real issues. These are just feel good times with hope and a sense of change....so do not be fooled about the reailty of the future.
