Knicks make room for LeBron
With two swift strokes Friday, Donnie Walsh overhauled the Knicks' roster, slashed the payroll and set the stage for a more dramatic play in two years: the pursuit of LeBron James. In the space of a few hours, Walsh, the Knicks' president, traded Jamal Crawford to the Golden State Warriors and sent Zach Randolph to the Los Angeles Clippers. In return, the Knicks will get three players whose contracts expire by the summer of 2010, when James is expected to become a free agent. The Knicks now have four players under contract for the 2010-11 season, at a total of $24.6 million. They could be as much as $40 million under the salary cap -- enough room to sign two superstars. The free-agent class of 2010 could also include Miami's Dwyane Wade, Toronto's Chris Bosh and Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire. Whether the Knicks can afford two players with maximum salaries will depend on how Walsh manages the roster for the next two years, and whether he can dump Eddy Curry's contract.

Knicks can keep dreaming. Lebron's going to the Nets to play for his man Jay-Z.

Walsh is an idiot. At this point, there is nothing that would indicate LeBron or any of the other players will even become free agents. He has sacrificed 40 points a game on a pipe dream. I hope that when this move backfires, Dolan will not play around the way he did with Isiah Thomas, and Walsh is fired.

Walsh is doing exactly what he has to do. Clean house. The only other choice is to aim for total mediocrity in two years.

I truly understand the move-
I have been sayig for a while that I want the ENTIRE
roster purged from any of the stank left by Isiah.....
BUT
if their grand plan is LBJ falling into their lap-
Not sure if THAT is a good reason

How does this move help? The players that needed to be cleaned are still here, and who says that any of the aforementioned players will even become free agents? Mediocrity is probably a stretch.

This move helps because these players weren't going to win the Knicks anything. If you have no shot of winning the championship, why play players like Randolph who destroy chemistry while getting you just enough wins to kill your draft position? They were dead in the water for a few years anyway; now, with or without LeBron, they can start rebuilding with very little cash on the books. Sounds like a smart plan to me.

Exactly my point! What happens in the interim? How long will it be before management realizes that players want to WIN. Just playing in New York isn't enough. Why would a player leave the beach in Miami to board a train wreck in the snow.

Then be satisfied with 25-30 wins a season, because that's all your going to get. The smart move would have been to put "pieces" around your best players. That's how you rebuild. Rebuilding suggests that you have something to start with.

but the only problem with that is our best pieces
are NOT franchise players.......
- so if we built around them-
we'd be in the same position in 4 years
Also - we've lost miserably with the same roster already-

Joe Johsohn, Lebron, and Zydrunas Ilgaukas. Lebron the max contract Joe a smaller multi year deal and Big Z two year deal. Then of their current players they can keep the guy they just drafted, David Lee, and some guys they draft in next two drafts. That team would compete for the championship

Or they could go Lebron and Bosh with other pieces built around

How so? Zach is only 27 years old and Crawford is 28. They are your best players. Why not build from there. At the end of the day, you've still got the cause of the problem. Marbury and Curry are still with us, and our 2 most consistent players are gone.

The Knicks are were NOT going anywhere in the next 2 years. Getting eliminated in the second round were as good as they were going to get. Most fans in New York don't mind getting 35 wins this year and next. That's because for the first time since the Dolans took over in 2000, there is not just hope now, there is a PLAN. The team has direction. In less than 19 months, they have the room to sign 2 of the top free agents. In this league, 2 superstars can take you a lot farther than what the Knicks have put on the court the last decade. Walsh's teams in NY will never be as bad as what Isiah and Layden put on the floor.
To the fan(s) in Ohio, if it was such a pipe dream, why haven't the players stated their current homes are where they want to be? The only pipe dream is Lebron staying in Cleveland, whether he goes to the Knicks or not. The Knicks aren't the only team that's aware of the free agent market in '10.
And for the clueless that think Lebron will go to the Nets, there will be no team in Brooklyn until at least 2 years into a new deal, that's if the it gets built. The new owner cannot get financing because of the economy. They haven't even bought the shovel to break ground. The Nets made the finals and still didn't sell out. In New York, they're not just little brother like the Mets are to the Yankees, they are an adopted cousin. Lebron would rather stay in Cleveland than move to the swamp.

jgb..I think you said it very well. I agree with you.. Maybe nothing will come of it in two years, but I think we all have a pretty good idea of what the maximum this core of players could have ever done. I am all for it...Remember, it is not like football, you do not need 22 starters, only five, and if three of them are good enough, role players can fill out a winning team..Just what I think. The coach needs players that fit HIS system, or else there is no hope.

first things first.. the knicks were having a good season.. this iss what mad this trade possible.. last year Jamal and Zack would not have gotten this much talent back in a trade.. the former Knicks are good players, but not great players in the grand scheme of things.. they would never thrive under Dantoni's offense as a 3rd or fourth option.. so it was a great move by Walsh to trade career losers like these to for decent talent and future cap space,, now, with LBJ, no one knows if he or even wad or bosh will opt out.. but chances are one if not all will.. and it's not only them.. amare, joe johnson.. and many more are slated for free agency as well.. curry will eventually be traded and marbury will be either bought out or sent home for the year.. so i think we should all applaud Walsh on haveing the guts to take chances and do things that Isaih was not willing to attemp.. clearly there was no way that rebuilding on the fly was gonna work with the contracts they had.. starting fresh, LBJ or not is the best option...

All thee trades and still stuck with Marbury and Curry. How will Walsh be able to put any other quality players around Lebron and Bosh if he can't unload the two biggest problems on the Knicks roster? It's all a dream until they prove they can put a winning team around anyone who might sign in free agency.

Why would LBJ go to the Knicks? He's already said he wants to be somewhere where he can win MULTIPLE championships. The Knicks are a long way from that now and will be even in 2010. It might take another 3 years after 2010 to be in the running for their 1st. You think he wants to wait for that? They're horrible!!!

They'll just buy out Marbury and Curry... but since they're paying them one way or another, then keeping them DND or DNP doesn't hurt them, and they'd be stupid to buy them out before the trade deadline..... someone may be stupid enuff to take them, and then it's problem solved.
I kinda like the small look of their team... Nate is great, no doubt about it... he makes up for his height disadvantage and then some with his play. And Chris Duhon is shutting me up after what I said about him in preseason.
I think you can expect most teams to be cheap thru this year and next.... and it isn't about Lebron or Bosh alone... have you SEEN the 2010 list?

If the Knicks can get rid of Curry they can get two mega-stars. Lebron the Nets? No problem. Sign Bosh and D-Wade.
The Nets will always play second-fiddle to the Knicks. Like the Jets to the Giants and the Mets to the Yankees.
I heard the Nets are moving to Brooklyn in 2020

Knicks still have a chance to be competitive.....Tim Thomas is a solid player who may not be a great player but he excelled in Phoenix offense a few years ago when Mike coached him
Al Harrington isnt a PF or a SF but he presents matchup problems for either position he plays
Mobley is a solid veteran who is not a ME first player like Crawford......
