Marbury refuses to play, D'Antoni fumes

A fuming coach Mike D'Antoni charged that Stephon Marbury refused to play last night when he needed him following yesterday's two blockbuster trades, called for his release and predicted a playoff berth with the new roster. The Knicks had just seven able bodies, forcing D'Antoni by league rules to suit up the exiled Marbury and claimed he wanted to give him at least 30 minutes. Marbury hadn't played all season. Marbury disputed D'Antoni's take, saying he was told yesterday he's "not in the plans." "The only thing I'm at liberty to say is that I was told they were moving forward, and I'm not the person who chooses to play or who doesn't."

Hmmm... more controversy surrounding Marbury. Imagine that. I'm by no means a Marbury fan, but he isn't the one who decimated the roster. The Knicks have said he isn't a part of their plans. Why should he be asked to bail them out of this situation?

Is there something in the water at the Garden? They just gave up 40 points a game, and D'Antoni is talking about making the playoffs with 3 players that will have to come in and adjust to his system on the fly. Walsh and D'Antoni have made it clear they are playing for the future, so the record this season was never the first priority, anyway. New York has had 7 straight losing seasons. Smart money says that this will be the 8th.

They are paying him $20mil a year. That's why he should bail them out.

November 22, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Why would anyone believe anything Stephon Marbury says about this whole affair?..He does not want to play unless it is all about him and he looks like a martyr...Not going to happen.

November 22, 2008  09:12 AM ET

If indeed D'A wanted him to play -
- d ! ck move on D'A's part-
we haven't heard a peep out of steph this whole time
the waters have been calm-
- to play him ONE game- then back to inactive..... not right

HOWEVER- he is under contract- and whether he is or isn't
happy- he should have played- just as any 12th man is supposed to

Why is D'Antoni a **** for asking someone to play who is getting paid? So once he deactivated him, is he supposed to keep him deactivated for the entire year and still pay him?

November 22, 2008  10:12 AM ET

yea i agree asking him to play is kind of wrong after making such a big fuss about him NOT playing for so long now... but when you got a 20 mil contract you gotta suit up and play.. this is the NBA "Star"bury... how in the world did you get the impression you are a good enough player to pick if and when you play?

November 22, 2008  10:47 AM ET

So suit him up and try to send him out there. If he does not go, suspend him without pay...lets get to it.

Whadatah Pootie.. i agree with you totally.. these pampered atheletes are too much these days.. they gotta re structure the collective bargaining agreement so that it is more management friendly.. if your not doing your job you don't get paid.. it's how it works in the real world... and in the NFL.. i thin that marbury should be suspended without pay for not playing wanting to play.. he got his shot but he is being too stubborn.. what a mess

November 22, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Heck yeah he needs to be suspended without pay for the rest of the season. Teams must have some rights to discipline a player that refuses to check into a game.

A fool and his money are soon parted. Donnie you better suspend him right now!

I totally agree. If a player is under contract and refuses to play he should forfeit his salary.

Agreed

Shi+bury is nothing but a CANCER!!! Send him on his way.

November 22, 2008  11:59 AM ET

I wouldn't be all that trusting of D'Antoni either..You saw what he did to Chicago. Could just be an attempt to get rid of him off the roster without having to pay him.. I honestly don't know who is telling the truth in New york. And a playoff team this year? Yeah I don't think so..They should just pay him his money and cut him that is the only way I see him leaving..Would make both parties happy in the long run i think..

November 22, 2008  12:02 PM ET

The problem is that the NBA is not the NFL where you can cut somebody whenever you want to and stop paying them. They handled this Marbury situation poorly from the beginning of the season. They have to pay him no matter what so why not get something out of him. In addition, when you showcase the players even if they have a bad reputation sooner or later someone will come calling so it actually helps you move the player. Rasheed, Randolph, Francis, Artest, are a few examples. Refusing to play Marbury makes no logical sense whatsoever, what has it accomplished except making matters worse? Instead of talking about Marbury's attitude b/c he's been quiet now everybody's talking about how he's been benched so its his benching that's become the distraction and that is solely on D'Antoni and Walsh. If they play him regularly they can still move him whenever they decide to and are more likely to do it. Besides, even if he is this cancer that people claim, as evidenced by yesterday's trades they aren't trying to win anyway.

November 22, 2008  12:11 PM ET

One other thing, I'm all for moving him for another expiring contract only or cutting him but I don't want to see him in the eastern conference. Is it me or do the trades made yesterday make no sense for LA and GS? GS has a roster absolutely loaded in the backcourt, S. Jax, Azebuike, Maggette, the Rook Morrow, and Ellis coming back in a month so what do they do, acquire another SG in Crawford. I don't get it. They're the ones who need an inside scoring option like Randolph. The Clips already have Kamen and Camby so is Radolph gonna play the 3...LOL. Now either Kamen who's been killing it or their best defensive player Camby is gonna have to come off the bench. I don't understand why we couldn't get more for Randolph like Eric Gordon or Kamen b/c Kamen doesn't make that much. I understand we want to get Lebron but we need something for him to come to. He's not gonna want to come here and just lose.

November 22, 2008  12:22 PM ET

I have a problem with the word "ask." You don't ask a player under contract to play, you tell him to play. "Dude, go into the game for Robinson." End of story.

No, they are ruining his career by not letting him play and reducing his market value.
All signs are set they want to get rid of Marbury, why should he do something for them if they dig themselves a hole.
He has no obligations to do so !

November 22, 2008  12:27 PM ET

I don't believe this story. Marbury was probably asked to suit up so that there could be 8 on the bench but I don't believe that he was to play.

Even with these deals, D'Antoni is hard-headed enough to not play him. It just looks nice to suit him up, that's all.

Jop! They are eyeing 2010.
They are not aring for any of their player's nobodys job is safe there.
Players notice that, that's why the Knicks are going ti suck badly ..

to #17: theyre ruining his career? hes paid 20 million to sit. his career is being paid to sit! i guess mike is ruining his career by asking him to actually stand up and play a kids game. and boy is d'antoni making it hard on stephon. mike was going to "make" him play a whole 30 minutes to collect is salary. lets see, 20,000,000 divided by 82 games + $243,902 per game X 10 games = $2,439,020 salary divided by 30 WHOLE MINUTES = $81,301 FOR EACH MINUTE THAT HE (SHOULD HAVE?) PLAYED. that would have been hell. to only make 81 thousand dollars per minute to play a kids game? god help us as we are truly a barbaric society ruining marburys career in this way. we are asking to live such a horrible life i feel i must go sacrifice a virgin or a sheep or something.

in other news: 10,000 people starved to death around the globe today because they couldnt access .25 cents worth of food.
