Paterno talking trash?

Something remarkable happened in the middle of Pennsylvania Friday night. An 81-year-old man talked trash. Joe Paterno turned into Joe Namath, guaranteeing a victory when his team takes the field Saturday against Michigan State. A hushed crowd at Penn State's Rec Hall listened to the coach extol the virtues of his senior class, which has won three bowl games. "And, by God, we're gonna win a Big Ten championship tomorrow!" he screamed. Paterno also promised that Saturday's game would not mark the end of his 58-year run at Penn State, with 43 as head coach. He's slated for hip replacement surgery next week and then plans to return to the sidelines. "Regardless of what you hear or what you read or what you think, I ain't going out after [Saturday]," he told the crowd of several thousand. "I'm not gonna walk out of that press box a loser. We're going to be Big Ten champions twice in four years!"

Who writes this garbage? How is guaranteeing a victory when you are favored talking trash? Especially when you're the head coach. Find some new material.

Good for JoePa, muck fichigan state! PSU should NEVER have lost to Iowa, they should be in the BCS Championship game and JoePa knows it!

Seriously, I'm a Pitt alumni and I hate PSU, but this is a joke of a story.

November 22, 2008  09:40 AM ET

I must admit though, it would be great to see PSU lose and have Pitt win out and have them play against each other in a bowl game.

Most of these T&R's are less than steller.

November 22, 2008  11:52 AM ET

THIS is trash talking??!! this writer is a meat bat...I see no 'Joe Willy" gaurantees in this story...just good Ole Joepa getting fired up...LET'S GO STATE!

"He's slated for hip replacement surgery next week and then plans to return to the sidelines. "

Yeah, except he doesn't actually stand on the sidelines like a normal coach. He sits in a booth 100 feet above the field. He's a figurehead.

He only started to sit in the booth after hurting his hip.

Well, Chasin' Utleys, PSU DID choke - and my boys are much appreciative of that, because now we're in control of our own destiny. PSU may be playing for its second Big Whoop title in 4 years, but UF will win its second NATIONAL TITLE in THREE years. Go Gators!!!

I watched the game and Iowa not only deserved to win, but they kicked the crap out of PSU.

If you want to play in the BCS Championship game, you better bring your best every week.

The old fart should just retire - this battle of the wills between JoPoo and Bowdown for the most wins is gettin' as old as they are. Yawn. I can't wait to see them both ride of into the sunset together. Ha - maybe a post-Bowdown FSU might actually get competitive again. I gotta say, playing FSPhew is getting kind of boring and mundane... this year will be worse than last year, and we'll make it three-in-a-row at "mighty" Doak Campbell.

He reminds me of a Mick Jagger. Doesn't know when to quit! He doesn't do much anymore. The person who said he is a figurehead is correct. When you start going into the booth and aren't on the sidelines, then it is time to hang up your cleats. If psu and joepa want to be part of the big party, then start playing some tough non conf teams. The lilbig11 shouldn't be in the bcs mix. If they want to go for the fantasy nc, then get another team and have divs and conf champ game. Make the non conf foe, which should only be 1 game, be a tough game. Iowa beat them get over it! They were lucky on a couple of games where the other team could have said, we really didn't lose that game, but they didn't. Also, how can you say you won the lilbig11 championship when you haven't played all of the teams in the conf? There are 11 teams in the conf and 5 have losing records overall. Doesn't sound like a great conf. They need another team to make the conf whole. Play some tougher non conf foes instead of coastal carolina, temple, syracuse. Oregon st normally isn't that great, but this yr they are having a pretty good yr, so they were the only team that psu played that was a good non conf foe. Games in the conf they only played 3 teams with overall win records, Iowa, mich st, ohio st. They get a lot of press because of joepa and not on how good they really are. I like joepa and if he has any class, which I believe he does, he should step down and let the guy who has been running the show get the credit for doing just that.

Florida lost to Ole Miss at home in beautiful weather. So Florida did CHOKE as well. But of course, they can correct this mistake by beating Alabama. I hope to see the Crimson Tide against the Red Raiders in the BCS, this way like in 2005 PSU's loss won't seem as bad (since they wouldn't have made it if they stayed unbeaten).

November 22, 2008  08:26 PM ET

wallab, what are you talking about? penn state had only two close games all year: ohio state and iowa. who else could have said penn state was lucky? neither the sec or big 12 make their teams play every other team in the conference. four teams in the sec and 5 teams in the big 12 have losing records. there would be more but their out-of-conference schedules are worse than penn state's. penn state has played and crushed a team in contention for a conference title. who in the sec can say the same thing? after florida and alabama, the rest of the sec is mediocre at best. no-one in the big 12 other than oklahoma has even played a ranked out-of-conference team. vegas has penn state ranked behind florida, usc, and the three big 12 south teams. i'm sure the oddsmakers are a little smarter than you.

I believe you are forgetting that they played OSU, who was ranked btw. And we should have won that game. Fing terelle pyror. Oh well he is a true fresman.
