Montreal bows out of MLS expansion race

The race to secure one of Major League Soccer's two expansion slots in 2011 has been cleared up dramatically after commissioner Don Garber revealed on Friday that Montreal has removed itself from consideration. Montreal's exit leaves Miami and St. Louis as the front-runners in a six-city race to be one of the two expansion cities added in 2011. Portland is also a contender, with Ottawa, Vancouver and Atlanta also in the mix.

I am cool with Miami and St. Louis, with Portland and and someone else soon thereafter.

I'm shocked about Montreal. I guess Gillett wants to focus his money on his fledgling Nascar team and trying to keep Liverpool. It's too bad because they were the best prepared in terms of a stadium and had good support and sponsorship.

Miami, St Louis, Portland, and Vancouver would all be good additions.

Even if I am questionable with Miami.

Barca is going to be too tempting for the MLS to pass up on....
Garber has already mentioned that if STL gets a financial backer that the league wants a STL team....

Miami and STL will get the two births.... while i feel Miami is a rough option, STL is prime for the taking.... instant rivalries, solid youth program to develop off of, and great soccer history....

Busch and their other biggest youth program have already agreed that when STL get a youth team that they would combine forces and produce a youth program that can house over 4k participants..... of course this was stated a year or so ago

While I hope Miami does get a team, waiting for that season is going to be sooooo loooong. I haven't felt the buzz in the community nor on the local news. Perhaps an official announcement from MLS will wake up the region.
My concerns are the FIU stadium deal and mostly hoping they're working on their own home. Just yesterday the Marlins cleared a major hurdle legally as the courts gave the go ahead for development on the old OB site.
Which makes me think the timing could be just right to roll out the new baseball/soccer park design.
I can't imagine, in this economy, that going up against Barca and other heavy groups is a good idea finacially right now for Gillet.

I heard that Busch might not be making the same community investements in the STL/MO area once they're taken over by a European Brewer. There was talk of downsizing and scaling back local sponsorships. My problem with STL is they don't seem to have their "i"'s dotted and "t"'s crossed. They're still trying to raise financing and get their stadium. Apparently Ottawa blew away the MLS brass with their presentation which enhances their changes with Montreal out. What bothered me about Garber's comments from his SOTU address is that he mentioned putting another team in Canada hurts the league is a way since it doesn't help them much interms of US sponsorship and tv ratings. I think if they tried to sell the game here a little more then they'd pick up more of a casual following. You can't buy any MLS shirts up here other than TFC or Beckham. No Blanco, Angel or even DeRosario and he's one of Canada's best players! And I seriously didn't know the playoffs were happening. They're not on tv here, I think the finals are if they're on ABC. It's frustrating because I'd like to follow the league more, get to know the rest of the teams instead of just TFC. MLS could do a better job of marketing the game in this country. MLB and NBA games are plentiful and its the same situation as MLS.

FINANCIALLY (dammit)

Portland makes the most sense. Miami was already tried once, and it didn't work. Why make the mistake again just because Barcelona wants another reserve team?

Hey MLS - how about Secaucus, NJ? Secaucus Pigfarmers. Nice sound to that.

I'm not. Montreal is all about hockey! They're insane about hockey over there! Every time the Montreal Canadiens win something the fans, after a riotous celebration, offer a couple of dozen cars (police cruisers preferred) as a burnt offering to the hockey gods! Nothing else matters. That's why the Montreal Expos are now the Washington Nationals!
