Why Thunder fired P.J.

The Oklahoma City Thunder has fired coached P.J. Carlesimo, according to league sources. Assistant coach Scott Brooks is believed to have been named the interim coach. The Thunder is a league-worst 1-12 headed into Saturday night's game at New Orleans. Its 105-80 loss at home Friday to the Hornets was Oklahoma City's 10th straight defeat. Carlesimo guided the Seattle SuperSonics to a franchise-worst 20-62 record last season before the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City. The Thunder has lost by an average of 14 points during its current losing streak, and front office executives became increasingly incensed with the team's lack of effort. Oklahoma City has trailed by at least 30 points in five of the past nine games. Brooks, meanwhile, is one of the league's up-and-coming assistant coaches and could be named the full-time coach.

What did they expect? Carlesimo was a lame duck all along. This Thunder management is so slow getting around to doing things, P.J. should never have been retained in the first place. Just like it took them forever to come up with a name and their plain looking logo.

didn't even know he was there....

How can the head coach be an incredible fool, but the assistant coach is "up in coming" ?

November 22, 2008  09:46 AM ET

up *and*coming

Isn't this the same team with no center, and drafted a guard with the #4 pick. PJ just got a promotion, and doesn't even realize it.

look his outh in the picture

mark my words ...
the thunder will relocate to another state and change their name at the end of the season

November 22, 2008  11:10 AM ET

always the fault of the coach...

November 22, 2008  11:50 AM ET

Clay Bennett traded away the Sonics best players so there would be no fan support in Seattle and he could move the team more easily. Now he has the gall to blame the coach for a failing team. I doubt Scott Brooks will do any better. Thunder management is to blame for their record, not PJ.

Great point.

Not only this, but has two 20-year-old (Westbrook and Durant) and one 22 year-old (Jeff Green).
If you three best players are that young, what else could you expect?
Lack of effort is hardly the issue

All Thunder, no Lightening. I predict a 12-70 record this year.

Yeah, the team is not good to begin with, so the coach is being blamed as a scapegoat.
However, PJ Carlesimo should have known better than to let himself be in this position in the first place. PJ is not known as a rebuilding coach - unlike, say, Larry Brown or Bill Fitch - so he should resigned after the move to Oklahoma.
In the future, PJ should accept the fact that he's not one of the premier coaches in the league, and if he wants to avoid getting into these situations again, he should look for an assistant coaching position with a winning team. On one hand, it's a step down from being head coach, but it is compensated by being with a successful team. For example, the role in San Antonio behind Popovich was ideal.

Trailblazer is right for a new coach anyway. Make room for Isaiah Thomas.

November 22, 2008  09:08 PM ET

P.J "choked".

November 22, 2008  10:19 PM ET

I'm not a big PJ fan but this is unfair to him. The team they assembled suck. Had they not given up Ray Alen, someone could have been teaching Durant the NBA game and not just throwing him out there on his own. You can't win on talent alone. It's not like Ray Allen wanted to leave. Now, look at the team. Even the logo and jersey are so terribly BAD.
