Tigers still interested in Wilson

Nearly 16 months after the Tigers came close to acquiring him at the 2007 trade deadline, the team is interested in obtaining shortstop Jack Wilson from the Pittsburgh Pirates, an industry official confirmed to the Free Press. Wilson is due $7.25 million in 2009 and $8.4 million (or a $600,000 buyout) in 2010. In that respect, he fits an important criterion in the Tigers' search for a shortstop: Wilson's contract is short enough that prospect Cale Iorg could inherit the everyday job at some point in 2010.

This wouldn't be too bad for the Tigers. Cale Iorg is a solid prospect, and should be in the bigs by 2010. His time off from baseball didn't seem to hurt him much.

Garth or Dane Iorg's son?

Wilson is overrated. He's average, at best.

I don't think he's overrated....
he's as you say- average
- but if on a good team (not having to be a 'leader')
he would be more prodictive IMO & a better player

- it's hard to play when you KNOW your team is destined
for last place every year.....

Jack Wilson makes all the plays he should. He doesn't make the great plays that he used to, but he makes the ones he should.

"It's hard to play when you KNOW your team is destined for last place every year....." - you don't know what you're talking about. Jack Wilson hustles every game, regardless of whether they are winning or losing - something you can't say about major league baseball players in general. He plays the game the way you are supposed to. He's just been injured a bit the past few years.

The Pirates will be asking for something decent in return...we'll see if Detroit is willing to give something up for an every-day SS, a good clubhouse guy and a guy who hustles all the time. (Maybe Miguel Cabrera will learn something...)

let the guy retire a pirate.

y is he making so much money hes average at best

I don't know if anyone wants to hear about a rehab stint, but I saw him play in Indy (AAA) and he went 5-6 with 6 RBIs and looked great. He fields and bats .300 I'd pick him up, but I don't have a team.

I'd rather see Wilson holding down SS until our prospects are ready than the other names that have been mentioned. I read over the weekend that Wilson may be traded to the Marlins, and the Tigers would then trade with them to get Wilson and Treanor (a catcher). That would not be bad for the right price.
And who would have ever thought that Detroit may be the next hotbed of beach volleyball??

increasingly, that's just an average major league salary. or at least average salary for a starter.

Jack Wilson has been great for that way-below-average Pirates team for many years. I think he would excel with the Tigers without as much pressure on him. Why not take Freddy Sanchez and Zach Duke with him before they get replaced by reality TV contestants from India.

Garth's boy. He took time off baseball for a Mormon retreat.
