Avery in Thunder's future?

07:42 AM ET 11.23 | Oklahoma City general manager Sam Presti will give interim head coach Scott Brooks the job for the remainder of the season, with a chance to win it permanently. Presti fired P.J. Carlesimo following Friday's loss to New Orleans, which dropped the Thunder to 1-12. If things don't work out with Brooks, keep an eye on ex-Dallas coach Avery Johnson, who has Spurs ties with Presti and played juco ball in Oklahoma.

Not like Avery is going to turn that ball club around immediately... What they need is a few veteran players to help out those rookies. If not, they are not going anywhere in the next 5 years

If ever... nothing like 1 win this far into the season to chip away at your ego and confidence...

Why would Avery want that job. If he stays patient a better situation will present itself.

This grab would be a huge step forward for the Thunder. They would be getting a great coach that has had a lot of success.

November 23, 2008  10:46 AM ET

The Thunder aren't going to be any better than they are right now. It won't matter who's coaching. Avery would be much better off staying in the booth at ESPN

Clay-Clay and his robber baron buddies will soon be getting a taste of the fan backlash, and they will be "shocked" and "disappointed," and their egos will be hurt. "How dare these people criticize my team after all I've done for them." Within five years, they will be sold, and bundled off to Las Vegas, Kansas City, or some other city. I am enjoying it from a far!

Teamless in Seattle.

ABSOLUTELY agree 100%

- when you take a job out of desperation-
(as a younger/non-proven coach)
and you KNOW it will be a losing senario....
you are only hurting yourself long term

They sure need it. They're easily the most forgettable franchise in the NBA right now.

November 23, 2008  11:44 AM ET

He could help this team the way D'antoni is helping the Knicks. Who would have thought they ever would be over .500!
And they beat the Wizards with only 7 players!

i seriously doubt the thunder will be gone from OKC any time in the next 10 years. Oklahoma tends to support there teams, something seattle couldn't do. Every game will be a near sellout for the rest of the season, they had 18,000 + for the clippers game, i mean come on the clippers. But we do need a great coach to motivate our young team and a solid center.

Seattle supported the Sonics for 40 years. Bennett bought the team, ran it into the ground and the fans knew he was taking the team to Oklahoma city. No one wanted to give money to the man who was stealing our team so people stopped going to the games. I know the fans in Oklahoma will support their team as they have supported their college teams well, but don't tell me we didn't support the Sonics because that simply isn't true.

They suck with or without Avery. Another first round draft pick for them this year. I will be surprised if they win 15 games to be honest!

November 23, 2008  01:42 PM ET

Avery should take his time and choose a team where he has a better chance to be successful. The Thunder are a few years away from having a successful season at best. I wouldn't be too anxious to coach this team seeing how quickly management gave up on PJ.

The last thing you want is for avery to be in charge of young players. He's a damn lunatic. He'll drain whatever love those guys have for the game of basketball right out of them. He'll make OKC a team of players that constantly look over at the sideline. As a Dallas fan, I'd much rather Avery go to a good team and sabotage them. OKC isn't really a threat. Him making them suck would just be redundant.

November 23, 2008  08:12 PM ET

Hopefully not - I want Avery to replace Sam Mitchell.

November 23, 2008  08:19 PM ET

Avery and a young team is not a good combination at all.

November 23, 2008  11:10 PM ET

come to toronto!!!! Sam loook more like a fashion designer than a NBA coach
