Is Weis done at Notre Dame?

I think it's now safe to say with no hint of reservation: The Notre Dame-Charlie Weis marriage is officially doomed. College football's $40 million man got a reprieve for his 3-9 debacle last year because, according to his apologists, it was Tyrone Willingham's fault. While there were growing grumblings following recent Irish losses to Pittsburgh and Boston College, most reasonable observers believed a 7-5 season would assure Weis' return next season, and AD Jack Swarbrick quickly put out a statement echoing such. But that was before Notre Dame lost to Syracuse. That's right, folks: Syracuse. Saturday in snowy South Bend, Weis' band of former five-star recruits blew a 23-10 lead and lost to lame-duck coach Greg Robinson's 2-8 Orange. Notre Dame has suffered a lot of bad losses under Weis. This was one was unquestionably his worst yet -- and, most likely, his death knell in South Bend. Once again, Weis has been exposed as an incompetent college coach, incapable of developing young talent.

I wonder what it will cost ND to get rid of Weis? Think the Pats will take him back?

Pear Bryant is certainly walking a tightrope, too bad Willingham didn't have as many oppurtunities to turn things around.

Weis is known to have a hard time passing up an impressive spread of food...

I say keep him, I like Notre Dame not stealing the gator or sun bowl from the big east every year

November 23, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Maybe he can salvage the season by beating USC next week..... HA! What a debacle that will be....

November 23, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Where are all the Golden Domers today? Still throwing snowballs? Admit it, Weis is a fraud. If your beloved school would have shown the same contempt they showed with Willingham they wouldn't be on the hook for a large contract because Charlie is not going to quit. The only thing Weis accomplished in his tenure was getting Brady Quinn first round money.

As a Syracuse fan, I can only say thank you. We have not had much to cheer about. But please, do not let Weis go, I am afraid he would just end up at the Dome, and the thought of him all dressed in orange is more than any fan could take...

November 23, 2008  10:14 AM ET

Haha 50year fan, the sight of Weis in orange would be a endless supply of jokes. I don't think SU will go that route though, I am a fan as well and would hate to see him in the dome. Don't think we have to worry about that though.

C'mon Notre Dame. You can't get rid of Charlie. He's the personification of not only the football program, but the school itself.

Sure he's incompetent and arrogant. But hell, he's an alumni, what did you expect?

Can't wait for the ND grads to start their annual whinefest that they can't compete because of their "high academic standards".

Yeah, Charlie's living proof.

November 23, 2008  10:47 AM ET

It's an old saying...but I'll say it anyway. ND & Weis deserve each other!!!!!!

November 23, 2008  10:47 AM ET

I'm frankly suprised by the choice of coaches that ND has made in the last few years. But the worst part is how long they manage to convince themselves that they should be kept.

November 23, 2008  10:56 AM ET

Maybe Charlie could take over at Tennessee? He is one of the few coaches out there who could fill Fulmer's big orange sweater vests!

November 23, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Keelee24..I know you are not suppose to say this, but I have been impressed with how Robinson has handled himself. Will never understand why it did not work out, I think he is a good coach. Just a bad recruiter I guess. Will be interesting to see who they hire. They need to recruit a lot better..

November 23, 2008  11:04 AM ET

Notre dame was incredibly stupid for giving him a contract extension

November 23, 2008  11:06 AM ET

Ahhh. The chickens are coming home to roost. Notre Dame, and their arrogant fans, and their holier-than-thou boosters are FINALLY getting something that they've actually earned... the humiliation that comes from watching their perennially overrated team getting exposed on national TV... by Syracuse...SYRACUSE! Oh the humanity!

November 23, 2008  11:08 AM ET

He needs to go now! I know he has a large buy-out on his contract but this guy is freakin horrible! I'm sure the alumni would gladly chip in to pay his **** out!

November 23, 2008  11:08 AM ET

For Michigan's sake, I hope Weis stays because RR and UM need to beat him after this years loss. But I can tell you that I left watching the game when ND was up and then later saw that Syracuse came back to beat them and I jumped with JOY, especially after the drubbing that UM took at the hands of OSU yesterday. Congrats to OSU for playing a great game.

Cruel but true!
