Marbury: I didn't refuse to play
Stephon Marbury told The Post yesterday that Mike D'Antoni's portrayal that he refused to play in Friday's game in Milwaukee is inaccurate. Marbury said Friday morning's conversation with D'Antoni didn't last long enough for him to refuse to play. According to Marbury, D'Antoni told him in the mid-afternoon he had 20-to-25 minutes for him in the wake of the Jamal Crawford trade. The conversation took place before the second trade that left the team with just seven able bodies. "He said I have 20, 25 minutes for you if you want to play," Marbury said in an interview yesterday morning. "I said, 'You've told me you're going in another direction and I'm not in the plans.' I never refused to play." At that point, D'Antoni didn't bother to press the issue, according to Marbury. "He had a smile on and just said, "I totally understand it, I get you," Marbury said. Marbury said he didn't think D'Antoni was upset and was shocked to read D'Antoni's rough comments in the newspaper yesterday.

Well, I think D'Antoni respected Marbury by asking him, not just order him to go out to the court. On the other hand, Marbury, even though he didn't say it directly, but what he said already implied that he didn't want to play.
That was a pretty good chance for Marbury to show the world that he still has something left in his tank, but of course, he wasted it and he won't be seen on the court soon.

I think Marbury said you didn't want me bfore and because you are short handed now you want me to help you out, no thanks but I will sit on the bench and collect my check while you go in a different direction. Although Marbury could have taken the high road I probably would have said thanks but no thanks myself.

If your boss tells you he has some work for you and you tell him you don't want to do it do you expect him to keep paying you?
Dolan step in and stop signing his checks. Suspend him for the rest of the season! If Stern has to settle this at the end of the season I like our chances.
Marbury is a loser!!!

I can't blame Marbury on this one. He's been told that his services are no longer needed. Now you want me to bail you out of a situation for maybe one game, possibly two. If you're asking, as opposed to telling me, thanks but no thanks.

I agree fully with Marbury, he's been stuck to the bench the entire season, and as soon as D'Antoni is in trouble with having no players, he expects Marbury to up and play?! Having not wanted him all season, they expect Marbury to play when they suddenly are in trouble!? That's some cheek.

As I said yesterday- D'A comes off as the loser here
I do believe Marbury said those things.....
and likely in a f'u/snotty way-
BUT I do believe Marbury WOULD HAVE played if at
game time D'A told him to get out there-
it doens't seem that D'A called his # DURING the game
I really don't like defending Steph....but in this particular
instance...he didn't do anything wrong - other than
kind of complain - IN PRIVATE - to the coach.

To be fair to Marbury and I am surprised some of you are being fair. Marbury is not allowed to practice with the team. He is not allowed to practice with his high school. At this point he can only workout, run and shoot baskets. If he does anything else, he risks getting hurt and the Knicks trying to void his contract. He can not be game ready. Some he goes out there and likely looks bad, damages him with other teams.
So he should do this for a team that has already cut him totally. What would you want to DO!

hey the knicks are paying him.
mike d'antoni showed his class by asking marbury if he'd like to play. much like when he'd rather have him inactive than play garbage minutes.
it would have been really interesting if 3 players got thrown out of the game either by technical fouls or fouling out. he might have been forced to swallow his pride or cause further embarassment if the knicks forfeit the game because he won't suit up.

i am so tired of marbury's ugly mug. he is there sitting on the bench with this long face and you can tell he is hating on the new team really hard. just get rid of this guy already please, his negative energy is not good for the rest of the team. i wish i can smack him in that big pumpkin head.

The Knicks need to swallow their pride and BUY HIM OUT, and let him go play where he wants to play. Otherwise, they're still wasting their money when they could buy him out and add someone to the active roster that can contribute.
Buying him out satisfies both parties. What is the organization waiting on?

I don't know who to side with here.
Obviously, what D'antoni did was a class act. He gave Marbury the option, he didn't force him.
BUT! Marbury's has been shunned by this team, and he is fully aware they're trying really hard to get him, they're even disagreeing on the money Marbury gets! In this situation, I really don't think Marbury felt obligated to play for a team that has banned him from practice, and hates him. If he chose to play, that would probably looked really desperate. He has an ego, though in this case it is somewhat justified.

first of all- Steph's made it pretty clear that he won't accept
anything less that 100% of his contract.- so HE is the one
that is the bigger problem.
Secondly-
their money is ALREADY wasted.
and who are they going to add NOW - that will really 'contribute'
other than garbage time minutes?.
The situatin sucks- agreed- but it HAD BEEN stable-
until this last issue....which D'A brought to the table

TOTALLY disagree.
- we really don't KNOW what was said......
but I think D'A broached the subject before the game,
marbury commented....game started and D'A DIDN'T call his #
so is marbury really 'at fault' for giving an opinion' ??
- He would have been had he been told to get in there-
but it never happened

Marbury messes up again...who cares if how Knicks treated him...what he just did was:
1) Add to his rep that he's uncoachable...wouldn't put aside his ego or hurt feelings...
2) Kept himself in the news for a negative reason which seems to be the case that every other week he putting his team or questioning his team in PUBLIC...gave Mike D'Antoni's more ammunition to keep him benched...Marbury's not getting any younger
3) Gave up his opportunity to showcase his skills where some other team may have liked what they saw and say, awww hell, let's get him.
4) He could have played and made it look like "it's not marbury, it's bad management in NY"...
5) and finally missed the chance to look like not only a team player (forget how management and coach treated me...my teammates who some have stood up for me need me) and potentially a hero (if he could have won) or savior with the media and fans...
he could have changed a lot of perceptions and instead, his hurt feeling have him say: "you wanted to go in a different direction...what was the coach supposed to say: i'm sorry...we need you...gravel...blah gravel... I usually support Marbury...love cheap shoes, standing for vick...being his own person, but this time I can't...stupid move...

two more points...he could have made the team his...he will have the longest tenure and with all the others leaving, he could have gotten back into good favor and become the face of NY a la Iverson in Philadelphia and could have possibly won back a starting position....get a clue marbury...
