Yankees may fail to land pitchers

With no playoffs in 2008 and a new stadium opening in 2009, the New York Yankees are trying their hardest to make the three top free-agent starting pitchers extremely rich. But it takes two parties to finish a deal. Imagine the horror in the Big Apple if the Yankees somehow struck out on CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. That would be the ultimate low blow to the Yankees' self-esteem and would leave manager Joe Girardi wondering how he's going to fill the 200 innings he got from Mike Mussina, who is retiring. It might force general manager Brian Cashman to stop trying to get Andy Pettitte to take a pay cut. And it could happen. Passing on Sabathia would seemingly give the Yankees more flexibility in their pursuit of Burnett and Lowe. They reportedly have started negotiations with those two at about four years and $60 million apiece, but neither Lowe nor Burnett has jumped on a flight to New York.

Any body who gives Lowe or Burnett the rumored minimum five years contracts that both these guys are looking for rre out of their everloving minds. Between age and injuries neither is worth the years that a team would need to invest and forget about the stupid money they woud be throwing at an oft injured and/or an aging pitcher(s). In all liklihood I see maybe four years for Burnett, but he deserves nothing more than .. maybe three with a team option, and, Lowe deseres noting more than two with, a team option for another year.

The market for pitching, questionable pitching at that, is very very inflated and stupid right now. The reportedly four years and $60 million apiece, the Yanks have on the table for both of these guys is morre than fair and, in fact, I think dumb. In actuality, even if the Yankees do not get CC I hope they also fail to get either Burnett or Lowe, also. i would see Hal and Cash go with some so-called second tier pitchers that would still be available a tless years and monies and then roll the dice with the Hghes and the Kennedys. **** 'em if they can't take a joke. Time to start using sound judgement and say enough! The Yankees will no longer be a part of the problem when it comes to dumb contracts but that they will be the team that is part of the solution and spearheads a return to rational and responsible terms, both in terms of years and dollars when it comes to engaging players and agents in contractual conversations.

argh, "tell it" ya blew my #1. sniffle...... c'est le vie... or, ya slow ya.....

November 23, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Yeah right! Anybody believe CC will turn down an extra 20 to 40 million dollars to play out West................ Um................................. NO! Anybody going to give Burnett 5 years, no so that means the Yanks will probably have the highest 4 year offer and once again, is he going to turn down the money to return to the BJs ?? Probably not. Lowe may go back home to Boston and to be honest he should be number 1 on the list with CC number 2 and Burnett to me is no better than resigning Andy, His stats suck over the years, not worth the hype or the money. They know Andy can pitch in NY and at worst he is a 500 pitcher but at best he may rebound and win 16 or 17 games this season. I would sign him and go strong after Lowe. Bolster the bullpen and if you can get CC great but if not go with Wang, Pettite, Joba, Hughes and a pick up!

November 23, 2008  09:00 AM ET

Lowe sucks!

November 23, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Lowe will be 39 at the end of a four years contract and is not worth the bucks being dangled in front of his eyes. He is losing his stuff and he will get killed in the AL with his junk and tiring arm. He will over work the bullpen and that is something no team needs. As it is teams carriy way too many relievers in my estimation that only weakens their bench. Instead of looking for older pitchers that can often break down, the Yankees should be teaching their own pitchers/prospects to pitch wiser, efficeintly and longer into games. That is the type of pitcher the Yanks need. Not Lowe, and, not Burnett. Yes, I would take a flyer on CC because he fits that mold and because of his age and I would overpay for him but even he worries me with that girth of his but so far he has been relatively healthy throughout his career, so **** it, and take a shot.

Have there been any signings at all??.... Do you think that maybe teams are not biting on the ridiculous demands??.... Do you think maybe the Yankees have finally decided that buying the World Series is not the best way to go??.... stay tuned....

The appeal of playing for the Yank Offs in the Big Apple is so overrated. I still think Sabathia goes to the West Coast, and the Yanks get Burnett only.

Wow. I was about to post the same exact thought before I read your's. I fully agree with you. I figured if Sabathia did not right away accept and sign, it meant he wasn't going to. At the same time, I figured Burnett would be the only one to sign. As a Yankee hater/Padres fan however, the last laugh will be on me when Jake Peavy is traded to New York in the most lopsided, uneven trade of the offseason (Peavy for Kennedy/Hughes).

Sir Robin, the Yankees will never realize that "buying the World Series is not the best way to go"
It's what has made the postseason in recent years most enjoyable for me.

November 23, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Sir Robin: I can only hope that sanity will prevail. Stories are floating that the Stoneburners are worried about the economy and might not throw away as much money as usual. It's good to see stories about the failures of huge. long-term pitching contracts. Personally, I think that Sabathia will sprain his gut in the next year or two and will never be the same again. But I'll wait and see.

I think if you really look at the Yanks as of late
they HAVE realized that...
what MAJOR FA acquisition have they made in the last 2 years ?
none-
so how are they 'buying' a WS ??

They have made BAD decisions over the last 8 years on PITCHING
which is why they haven't advanced....
johnson, pavano, wright, brown...the list goes on & on.

The Yanks HAVE changed.
they didn't give up their 'big' prospects last year to get Johan
- and now they are going after a pitcher...
but so are ALOT of other teams.

not sure if they're really going after Tex- and there AREN'T any
other real big FA position playersaround...so how are they
'buying' a WS??

November 23, 2008  12:21 PM ET

I'd laugh my a** off if the Yankees didnt' get any of the "Big Three" pitchers.

November 23, 2008  12:23 PM ET

The Yankees are trying their hardest to get their pitchers that they want but they can't because these pitchers are so picky with where they want to go. C.C. Sabathia wants to go to the Dodgers so he can play tag with Manny and hit but he doesn't realize the Yankees can outbid any team and they can make the other team look bad by outbidding them by so much. Sabathia is dumb. All he has to do is sign his name and he will get 25 million a year just for tha and will get 140 million in six years. Take the offer and play in the new stadium for the Yankees. Burnett will go to any team but he has to fire Derek Braunecker because the Red Sox might just beat the Yankees for Burnett although the Sox have pitching. The Yankees, on the other hand, don't. Derek Lowe wants to go back to the Red Sox so the Yankees have to outbid the Red Sox for both of those guys against the Red Sox if hey intend to get them. I think the Yankees will win and they will finally have the picthing it takes to get them back to the ALCS.

November 23, 2008  12:30 PM ET

The same crap everytime about buying the world series. Everyone buys pitching if they're smart.
Everyday players it won't work with. You need a solid base of players of your own and then you add in key free agents where needed. You can't hope you happen to develop players in the minors to fill in the blanks at certain spots after going free agent crazy. It's too much of a crapshoot.

Peavy wants no part of the AL East.

You're an absolute idiot. Don't talk unless you're have first person experience. Whenever I go to the city, I feel that sense of realism and history regarding Manhattan. New York is the capital of the world, and playing for a sports team here is a real honor. Succeeding as a Yankee is 10x better than anywhere else.

As for my thoughts. If they can't land CC, don't sign anybody else and learn the term "rebuild."

Doesn't take much to get you guys to come out and play!.... HA! Actually, I think the Yankees won with a lot of home grown talent once upon a time.... sure, fill in with a FA here and there, but I don't think you really can buy a WS.....

I have a feeling that the Baseball Union will have some say with CC going to the Yankees. If CC takes less than 6 years $140 from the Yankees and takes less... then it will bring down how much everyone else will get. CC needs to set the bar high for other high end free agents
