For the first time in his 13 NFL seasons, Amani Toomer is in a contract year. In a few months, Toomer could be history. General manager Jerry Reese and one of Toomer's agents, Justin Schulman, declined comment when asked about the progress of negotiations. Toomer said he hasn't been keeping close tabs on the situation, as he has been focused more on football. But he said he doesn't believe a deal will be reached before the end of the season. According to someone informed of the progress of negotiations, there have been no talks whatsoever over the past few months. The person, who requested anonymity because both sides aren't commenting publicly said it's too soon to tell if Toomer will remain a Giant next season because the Giants appear content to wait until the offseason to resume talks.

He has been one of the all time great Giants. That said, his cap value this year is $5,200,000. It is a question of how much he demands to stay part of the team. I do not see them offering the same money, and it is hard for any player to agree to a cut in salary. He will become a FA. You cannot keep everybody..It will be up to him, but a team like the Titans , with a lot of cap space, will make him an offer that the Giants will not matcch. Jacobs and Webster are the priorities in FA.

Toomer has been a great player for the giants, and i'd like to see him stick around for one more year if he's willing.
He could probably get a 2 or 3 yr deal elseware but after 13 yrs why would you want too ?
especially when contracts are not guaranteed.
Amani is known in the locker room and fans as the G.O.A.T....The greatest of all time, and I know he can contribute more of those circus catches he's known for next year.

Give him a 2 yr deal with a nice S.B. and make his cap #s friendly,
Here's a good (and likely ) senerio...Get your 2nd ring this year, come back for your 14th season, and maybe a 3rd ring ( threepeat ) and head for TV.
Amani's intellegent and well spoken, so a TV transition should be seemless.

November 23, 2008  09:53 AM ET

I like Toomer, he's a class act and reliable receiver without all the drama. I would like to see him finish out as a Giant but I'm sure youger FA's will get more of the attention and money. With Plax's behavior and problems off the field having Toomer around to mentor the younger receivers would not be a bad thing.

While I have retracted my original statements about the Giants not repeating, let's not just hand them the trophy yet. They still have to earn it and, yes, they still the best team to do so. But, it's gotta happen first.

Only a threepeat??

could be his last season in the NFL unless he's willing to take a veteran's minimum contract next season. its just how the game works.

November 23, 2008  11:20 AM ET

He just got a divorce and lost some moolah so it's unlikely that he will retire. He talks like a guy who's going to have to have his jersey tore off him in order to leave.

I love Amani, but the Giants already have a possession receiver in Steve Smith who makes less, is younger and faster. It's time to give Manningham, Moss and Hixon a shot.

Being a big Giants fan and not having missed a game in 7 years, I really like Amani Toomer and he is my favorite receiver but he is getting old and I don't want him to leave. He is never injured and always shows up to games. He is humble and is never in trouble with the NFL. He doesn't argue calls and after 13 seasons with the Giants, he is still a franchise player type receiver. He has played along with Kerry Collins, Eli Manning, and Kurt Warner. Amani Toomer has been through a lot with this team and he has won the championship he deserves. I want the Giants to re-sign him and let him stay for a couple more years. He is always the one who make that game winning catch or the play that saves his team. He will have the Giants retire his number and he will go to the Hall of Fame as the best Giants receiver ever. But if he is thinking about leaving, the Giants have to convince him to retire before any team offers him a deal. The Giants have new receivers that they can keep for a while like Mario Manningham, Domenik Hixon, and Sinorice Moss. They also have Kevin Boss developing and Plaxico Burress is hooking up with Manning for the most touchdowns in the past couple of saesons. This team looks good and it would look better if Toomer were to stay.

The NY Giants should definitely sign Amani Toomer and trade Plaxico Burress.

I'm glad you cleared up the fact that you are a Giants fan because, frankly, I had no idea. LOL!!

I'm just havin a little "tongue in cheek" fun. I realize (and i'm sure the team does) that every game will be a war for 60 min. With a 9-1 record and being a defending champ, you're as marked as they come.
No win, let alone a playoff win, will be easy. I'm sure to be on the edge of my couch, for the rest of the ride , thinking... please please please. let it happen.. lol !

I'm sure that the "edge of couch" syndrome could be translated into many lower back problems as we age. Cowboys are punching the Niners right now. Who does the Giants play?

November 23, 2008  03:36 PM ET

The throw happy cards, i'm cautiously concerned, by my calculations, 3 more wins and the gnts have the division. the boys and skins would have to win out for the rest of the season and I still believe we would have the tie breaking criteria.
The giants secondary, has at times, looked vulnerable. and they are a little banged up now. I hope they play the cards recievers a little closer than they've been doing in recent games.
But if spags thinks thats the way... who am I to criticize.

November 23, 2008  07:58 PM ET

Two big NY wins today congrts to the g men and the jets. The Giants beat a very good team in Az and the jets, well what can I say, Tenn. is no longer undefeated, nice going guys, but still Favre in a jets uniform? Oh well what can I say.

November 23, 2008  08:03 PM ET

Toomer has been a class act for the giants and he will be willing to take a pay cut and play year to year, he has been a great guy and good example for the frnachise and ownshership is aware of this.

13 year career in the NFL is pretty good - time to pass the baton

Remember when everyone questioned why JR was letting Luke P go as a FA? - worked out pretty well, right? The front office of the Giants knows what's best for the team (been over a decade and a half that I've been able to say that w/ a straight face) - they'll do the right thing.
