The Red Sox are doing due diligence on free agent Rocco Baldelli, who could be in the mix as a fourth outfielder after the team dealt Coco Crisp to the Kansas City Royals last week for reliever Ramon Ramirez. According to major league sources, Baldelli, from Cumberland, R.I., met with the Red Sox at Fenway late last week to discuss his future and the effects of the mitochondrial disorder that limited him to 80 at-bats with the Rays last season.

QUOTE(#2):

Their starting OF is set, but a couple of good backups such as Rocco would be great.

80 at bats will be enough, eh?.... Great guy, wish him the best, but I wouldn't want to see him signed to my team....

Sounds like they're borrowing problems. What's the upside? Contract?

Is Rocco Baldelli better than Crisp??? I don't think so. In essence, that is what you have done to your OF. Are you better than you you were with your first four OF? Who takes up the offense that Manny produced when there ( last few weeks excluded)? What does this guy do that Crisp did not?

He's better than crisp- overall....and he's a better clubhouse guy
His health is the real issue

jgb..You are probably right. Can't play if you are hurt though. He is from the area ( RI), for what it is worth.

I thought he was from Quahog.

Is it time for the comparisons to Joe DiMaggio to end?

but if he's a 4th OF- it lessens his chance of getting hurt

- I personally wouldn't want him on my squad-
injury prone players don't change- see moises alou-
and when you sign these type players- you'll be having
to sign someone to replace him come May.

If he can fill in and take innings away from Drew (most likely to be injured), then who cares how many at bats he had last year. Crisp was a trading chip. Last year, they had a weak bullpen. They strengthened it. Crisp is a starter. They believe Ellsbury would be better which is why Crisp was moved.

November 23, 2008  12:12 PM ET

I like this for the Sox. Baldelli should be able to remain productive with limited at bats.

As a bench guy and pinch hitter it's one thing but if someone gets hurt can he go out there on a consistent basis for a few weeks with his disorder? You know Drew will miss some time and Elsbury didn't exactly light it up in the 2nd half last year.

Face it. The Sox lost one of the coolest names on the team when they traded "Coco Crisp". But they don't lose much with someone named "Rocco Baldelli". In fact, it could be argued that "Rocco" gives you everything that "Coco" had plus the extra "R". Advantage Rocco.

Crisp was trade to allow Masterton to start if needed. With Bay, Ellsbury and Drew, there's very few games left for the 4th outfielder unless one of the three is hurt for an extended period.

Makes sense he cant play everyday anyways.....Plus he has a good righthanded bat

November 23, 2008  01:44 PM ET

Hed get some time Drew and Ellsbury would get there days off against leftys

Cyder, ya think "hangnail" Drew will miss a few games this year, do ya?..... he missed over 50 last year and yet is beloved because he got a few key hits....

Actually, Ellsbury sucked the whole year until September.
