Leach: OU should be ahead of Texas

The Oklahoma win Saturday night throws the Big 12 South into a three-way tie for first place with OU, Texas Tech and Texas. But Tech could still win the Big 12 South if Tech beats Baylor next week and OU loses at Oklahoma State. After the game, Tech coach Mike Leach was asked how he would rank Oklahoma versus Texas. If the league ends in a three-way tie, the highest team in the final BCS rankings will go to the Big 12 title game against Missouri. "I would put Oklahoma ahead," Leach said. "They beat us and they deserve it."

Word booty son.

November 23, 2008  10:56 AM ET

No big secret that Leach hates Texas--I`m glad he does. If such an injustice occurs and a team moves ahead of a team it LOST to on a neutral field, it will only prove how badly a change in the BCS format is needed. Sooner fans are clamoring to cheese their way into the Big 12 title game. We hands down BEAT OU in the RRR and that means more than a National title anyway. Texas didnt run up the score and had many chances to do so this season. Mack has class---Stoops? Well he does run it up and Back door Bob is a good title for him.

November 23, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Uh, Texas beat OU, so how can he say that. Head-to-head counts in the BS BCS.

November 23, 2008  11:35 AM ET

That's just the point. He has to make a judgement call. 3 teams all 1 and 1 against each other. Head to head means absolutely nothing because it just leads you round and round.

November 23, 2008  11:38 AM ET

I was just happy to see Leach get nailed. His treatment of A&M (scoring an extra TD at the end when the game was out of reach and taking a knee would have been the thing to do) made seeing his butt kicked last night all the better. BTW - I'm a Mizzou fan, I have no love for the Aggies. I just think it's tacky to run up the score on somebody.

November 23, 2008  11:58 AM ET

I'm tired of people ignoring the obvious when talking about head-to-head match-ups. If you're going to talk about head-to-head, Texas fans, then you'll have to rank Tech ahead of you!

November 23, 2008  12:07 PM ET

I'm tired of Texas fans overlooking head to head matchups. Which is why you should never be ranked ahead of Tech. If OU loses to OSU next week, Texas still loses out to Tech in a 2 way tie. Is that justice? What do you think about head to head now, longhorn fans.

November 23, 2008  12:12 PM ET

Many like to diss on Stoops as not having class by "running up the score". I think you all need to go back and look at the past. Stoopshasn't always allowed such but when his teams took heat for NOT beating a team by more he called out the BCS and pointed out that it doesn;t matter which way you lean someone always has a way of turning the news against you. Some may think it's tacky but Stoops, and some others, have to allow their players to perform up to their ability to show what they can really do or risk losing points in the biased, ignorant BCS system.

Take a look at the seasons for both Texas and OU. OU's loss to Texas isn't any worse than UT's loss to Tech. I will give UT a little for winning on a neutral field but take a look at all three games involved in the three way tie and also compare the other games for the seasons of all three teams and OU deserves to be ahead in the polls.

November 23, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Yes Texas beat OU..... but that was in week #6. Texas then lost to Tech a month later. Every college football fan knows that a late loss means a whole lot more. Plus Texas only won by 10 points against OU, and then lost by 6 points to Tech. OU beat tech by 44 points. That right there should be the deciding factor in the head to head debate. If Texas thinks they should be ranked ahead of OU then Tech should be ranked ahead of Texas.... and does that make any sense right now? OU has become a different team since they played Texas, and the strongest team should be who represents the Big 12.

Head-to-head and timing. It's when you lose. IMO, 'Bama should be #1 followed by Florida, SC, Texas, Oklahoma and Tech. If Oklahoma has the best defense in the Big 12, and they're 55th in the nation, no defense is being played in that conference.

If its when you lose that counts, then- OU loss to Texas was earlier in the season than the UT loss at Tech so.... how do you figure Texas over OU? Seems like all of the Texas fans are trying to rationalize keeping their position in ranking ove OU without rational arguments.

First of all...... Anyone who thinks the RRR is more important than a national title should think about the $$ value going to a title game provides. Your team can be EVEN BETTER the next year with the new finances and better recruiting. Why would you not run up a score against Tech? They are a good team and given some momentum they could come back and win in the last second of the game!

I mean props to Mack Brown for not running up the score against Baylor... but were they really a threat the way Texas Tech is?
Plus I think you forgot about Florida Atlantic, Rice, and Arkansas.
52-10 isn't running it up? And once again those teams weren't threats!

Texas fans are stupid!

First of all, I'm not a Texas fan. Secondly, they beat OU head-to-head, period. Texas fans have the same argument as ND fans back in '93. ND beat FSU, but loss afterward to BC, and it ultimately cost them a 'ship. I just want OSU to beat y'all so we can end the speculation and SC can climb in the rankings.

November 23, 2008  12:34 PM ET

for this week, tex wil probably be 1 spot ahead of OU. but that's just to keep the horn fans at bay until OU plays OK State. If OU wins in Stillwater, then the jump will occur. the rationale being that at this point in the season, OU just spanked Tech and beat OSU, while texas (who lost to tech by 6) beat Tex A&M. OU in, Texas still gets sent to BCS, probably Fiesta. possibly against USC. win win for all. sorry horns. good luck against the trojans

November 23, 2008  12:41 PM ET

Texas played 4 highly ranked teams in a row, week to week...And lost in the last seconds of the game in Lubbock...If you watched the games, you'd know why you rank Texas ahead of the other two...

Nobody had a tougher stretch of games than Texas this year...NOBODY...Both Tech and OU had a week off to prepare for one another...I mean, come on...Its not like Tech pounded Texas, we lost on a buzzer beater, didn't have our best game, and still did enough to win...

Needless to say, this would be a mute argument if we had a playoff...Its unreasonable to ask teams to be perfect for 12, 13 games to have a shot at winning....

You may have had your games consecutive, but you will have only played 4 top 25 teams.... OU plays 5. Tech also only plays 4.

YOU NEVER LED IN THE BALL GAME UNTILL THE 4TH QUARTER AFTER A KEY INJURY TO ONE OF OUR PLAYERS , YES YOU WON BUT YOU DIDNT BEAT US HANDS DOWN ! AT THE END OF THAT DAY , YOU DESERVED THE WIN . YOU MUST HAVE DOUBTS ABOUT YOUR TEAM ACTUALLY BEING THE BEST TEAM IN THE SOUTH , OR YOU WOULDNT BE A HATER ! POOR shothorns , ACROSS THE COUNTRY EVERY ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THE TWO BEST TEAMS AND IN THE SAME BREATH ITS OU AND FLORIDA ! TEXAS IS GREAT AND SO IS USC , ALABAMA . BARRY SWITZER ALWAYS SAID THAT THE CREAM WILL RISE TO THE TOP, YOU shodhorns ARE AWFULLY SENSITIVE . JUST WIN BABY AND IF YOUR DESERVING TO GO , THEN I TIP MY HAT TO YOU shorhorns. GO SOONERS BEAT THE COWBOYS ! PS , WE PLAYED ARE SUBS IN THE 4TH QUARTER , SO CRY ABOUT IT MACBABIES ! YOU SEE WHAT THE GATORS AND THE SOONERS CAN DO BUT THE CLASSLESS CRYBABIES FROM AUSTIN CANT , YOUR LOGIC IF WE HAVE A 3 WAY TIE , THEN TT GOES OVER YOU CRYBABIES ! BUT I BET THE BEST TEAM GOES TO THE GAME AND THATS WHY YOU ARE WHINING !

November 23, 2008  12:57 PM ET

I can honestly see both sides of this. I guess we need to wait until next weekend to start figuring this out. OSU will have had 2 weeks to prepare for their bitter rival, OU. If OU goes to Stillwater and smokes OSU I think, rather fair or not, OU will jump ahead of the Longhorns.

I SEE BY THE NUMBER OF POSTINGS THAT YOU APEARENTLY KNOW MORE THAN ANY ONE !!! THE REASON YOUR SEC DEFENSES HAVE BETTER STATS ? YOU PLAY AGAINST WEAK OFFENSES ! PAD THEM STATS BABY , ONLY FLORIDA HAS AN OFFENSE AND ITS THE SAME/SIMILAR OFFENCES THAT ARE RUN IN THE BIG 12 , SO WHATS YOUR POINT ? HOMER !

I agree with DoIt4Johnny that an OU win in Stillwater and they're making the BCS jump over UT. With that victory, OU will be the ONLY team of the three (OU, UT, Tech) to have beaten a quality opponent on the road. Huge given all the other factors. I understand UT's frustration, but don't blame OU. Blame the BCS mess!

In a true playoff system, head-to-head should always be the sole determining factor. Problem is, we're not in a playoff system. The BCS system takes a gazillion factors into account - subjective polls, strength of schedule, who lost when, whose playing best now. In BCS, head-to-head is simply one more factor.
