Teixeira leaning toward Red Sox?

Well, we found out this week what Angels free agent Mark Teixeira wants - a home for the holidays. During Thursday's ESPN telecast of the Georgia Tech-Miami game in Atlanta, Teixeira told sideline reporter Erin Andrews he wants a baseball team for Christmas. "I don't want to put a timetable on it, but Christmas morning, I want to know where I'm going to be for the next couple of years," he said. "So hopefully, by Christmas, it will be done." Knowing agent Scott Boras' affinity for the big stage, I'm guessing Teixeira's headline-grabbing signing will be announced during baseball's winter meetings Dec. 8-11 in Las Vegas. What better place for the rich to get richer? But I don't think it will be with the Angels. If he were going to re-sign in Anaheim, I think it already would have happened. Just a gut feeling. Even the people I talk to in the organization don't seem optimistic. Teixeira would be ridiculed if he signed with perpetual losers such as the Baltimore Orioles or Washington Nationals, so my guess is he'll sign with the Boston Red Sox.

Teixeira is a very good player and will be an asset to anyones lineup. But as MOST of us realize to win a championship its about pitching, pitching and more pitching.

Is Theo having Thanksgiving dinner with the Teixeira's?

I'm gonna go work on my knuckleball. I have a dream.

I'm still not convinced that Tex would be THAT great of an asset to the team. That's just me I guess.

Well, if they do that then they have an infielder to move. Everyone expects it to be Lowell. I can see this happening, they may need to eat some of the contract, but I could see him landing back in the NL. I don't think he will bring a lot back, maybe a mid level prospect or 2.

The other option for the Sox and Lowell, if Tex signs in Boston, is to trade him with a good prospect to Texas for one of their catching prospects. That gives them the flexibility to sign 'Tek for a couple of seasons, then groom his successor.

Also being reported is that the Sox and Tigers are talking deal for bad contracts. To Detroit would go Boston's bad contract to Lugo, then coming to Boston is Detroit's bad contract to Willis. It gives both a fresh start, puts Willis in a place where he could possibly succeed. Willis is still young, so there is a possibility of development. Worst case, they just have a different bad contract.

What the heck happened to Dontrelle Willis anyway? He won 22 games in 2005 with an E.R.A. under 3.00 Did he hurt his arm or something? Anyone know? He's only 28yrs. old I believe.

Gahook....you make it seem like teams will be lining up to take Lowell of the Sox's hands. Also, wasn't Detroir supposed to be a fresh start for Willis? He has only been there one year. If you look at his stats, they get worse every year.

Dontrelle is fat and has horrible mechanics. A young pitcher may be able to get away with that but not as they get older.

Wasn't Dontrelle also in the NL in '05?

November 24, 2008  08:49 AM ET

The Yankees weren't involved in this article because?? They're much more viable candidates to reel Tex in than the Nationals and Orioles combined.

I think they're 100% focused on pitching.

I dont think the yanks are committed to having two long, long massive contracts at the corner positions, completely handcuffs you with them for a decade. Also have a $140 million nearly decade long contract on the table...you dont just throw this money around long term even for the yankees.

Yes and also 06 and 07 when the slide began.... in 07 his ERA was over 5.00, but Detroit still took him..... nothing to do with the league, he just lost it.....

I love how the OC Register "guesses" he'll go to Boston.... they have no idea..... Whoever makes the best offer will get him.....

I distinctly remember people on here praising Detroit for signing him to that new contract last year.

Halleluhala!! I admit, I may have been one of those praising! The Willis/Cabrera deal looked pretty good on paper. But most everyone knew that Willis lost it after about 4-5 starts. Now, to say that he will have a rebirth with a new team is highly suspect.

I sided with Willis b/c he had been good in the past and it appeared that a new team may affect him in a positive way. After all, this is one guy that was in trade rumors every single year. Detroit was supposed to be good so the thinking was that he's moving to a winner and things could turn around. But his production had been sliding prior to the detroit deal and he was abysmal this year.

I didn't have a problem with the trade. It was when Detroit turned around and signed Willis for like $10 million a year.

$10MM didn't seem like much at the time....I think a lot of people were shocked at how badly Willis pitched this year.
