MLS denies Donovan-Bayern loan

Major League Soccer Commisioner Don Garber denied that any loan deal had been arranged with Bayern Munich for American soccer star Landon Donovan. "We haven't heard anything from Bayern Munich about Landon going on loan to that team," said Garber at a Friday press conference. The Los Angeles Galaxy forward, who can also play as an attacking or right midfielder, has been on training with the German club for days at the invitation of coach Juegen Klinnsman. Donovan impressed enough to draw compliments from both Klinnsman and manager Uli Hoeness, who indicated that the American international would be sought for as the team's primary loan deal for the winter window, even to the exclusion of all other options. Garber did indicate that MLS is not against loaning out any of their players, per se.

of course Garber is not against loaning out its players... $$$ :D

anyhow, we have seen this exact story with Blanco and beckham.... MLS just wants to be the first to "officially" announce it :P

After watching Super Sunday Plus on FSC...my opinion still hasn't changed about Garber running the league.

I could post a rather long comment about this but I won't. I will say this...Garber had the opportunity to at least change some of the playoff structure...i.e. first round being a home game for team with better record, conference finals being home / away...but of course, he ignores the reasonable thing to do.

And so much for the single table format that had gone around as a rumor this summer...

November 24, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Uli Hoeness...sweet name, per se. what does he mean he hasn't heard anything from bayern, they have him for basically a tryout!! grow up garber.

November 24, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Perhaps Garber also will claim that Podolski saying he wants out in January has nothing to do with this. Yes, I know there's been word of this for a while; but apparently LD's performance has affirmed Podolski's wish. Pretty damned impressive!

November 24, 2008  11:06 AM ET

Podolski never settled at Bayern, so I wouldn't say that LD is chasing him out of town. Garber is a ****, he's not a soccer man and has no connection with the fans. He went to the Gary Bettman school of commissioners. The league has no vision and is living in a fantasy world. It would have been pathetic to call a team that won 1/3 of its games your champion (thank god the better team won). Aside from the farce that is the playoffs, the regular season is meaningless. Reward the poor and mediocre, punish the good, that's MLS's credo!

I didn't say he's chasing him out of town. I said it affirmed that he doesn't feel he has a place there.

I'm sure this thing will get resolved. Might just have to throw more dollars into the equation.

and here we agree on the MLS and their follies....

the playoff system is a joke... YET ANOTHER REASON WHY I TELL EVERYONE THAT THE SUPPORTERS SHIELD IS THE TRUE CHAMPIONS.... but of course the media notes the Cup as the league winners...

i wouldnt say the regular season is meaningless.... as it is required good performance to win the SS (which is just as good as the Cup in terms of intl' tournys).... BUT, if you claim it has no determinate in the playoffs then you are nuts.... case in point, CLB and CHI.... if the game were held in CHI, the game would most likely have been different.... you are drastically taking the atmosphere out of the equation... but all together the playoffs are TERRIBLE

ive been saying it for ages, the Cup is just a over-glorified Cup.... the SS winner is the true winner of the league...

November 24, 2008  01:15 PM ET

I think they do need to place more attention on the Shield... that's likely as close as you'll ever get for a single table pipe-dream. But the playoffs should adopt a home & home structure..... hell, just doing something as simple as renaming the "MLS Playoffs" to the "MLS Champion's League" would do wonders for its credibility around the world...

November 24, 2008  01:24 PM ET

C'mon MLS.

Home and Home structure, except the finals, which should play on the field of the team with the best regular season record. Busting your **** during the regular season should count for something. I was routing hard for the Crew yesterday just for that reason.

Garber would never state that there is a deal in the works in hopes that there could possibly be a bidding war. Most likely, if Bayern wants LD- they will get him considering they are a cash cow. Realistically though I don't see this being the best fit for LD.
Even with Podolski gone- where does he fit in? Too many solid options that are already a part of the system there- besides, I think Podolsky is probably still a better player than Donovan- and if Podolsky isn't seeing all the playing time he wants- then I can't imagine Donovan will be either.
Still- I think it would be great to see guys like Ze Roberto and Ribery setting him up, but will this really make him a better player for the USMNT? Who will fill their rolls the same way with the same skill?
Too many questions around this club- he might be a better fit at another mid-level team in Germany or somewhere else in Europe where he can be a valuable and useful asset almost immediately.
In the meantime- MLS can stand to get a decent cash payout for him to help weather the financial storm. Garber also announced some plans to help with lowering costs for the league that can help for long-term growth (limiting the number of developmental players was one good move). Yeah- in a perfect world, there would be more money to throw into clubs and things would act more like capitalism (with each team in charge of their own bottom-line), but in these tough times I don't think it is a bad idea for Garber to act responsibly economically.
Therefore I would argue that Garber actually does have good vision for MLS.
He even stated on Friday that one day he feels that the playoffs will eventually go away, but not until there can be some larger table in place with more teams- so most likely at least 4-6 years down the road when some of these expansion teams come about.
Plus even then- if the playoffs sell enough tickets, and more importantly sell enough advertising revenue- then the playoffs will most likely continue.
What was interesting about his Friday speach was the fact that many of the international dates that interfered with the MLS schedule (I probably should have stated that the other way around) could not completely be avoided simply due to the loss of revenue. However, he did lower the number of international/MLS league dates that are on schedule for '09.
I think MLS's structure is a good one considering how short of a time the league has been in existense.
I do agree 100% that the Supporters Sheild though is the true champion of MLS- and in the case yesterday with Columbus winning- I was glad to see them not only win but win convincingly over NYRB. The true champion got another shining moment yesterday- too bad though the match took place in LA.......... I guess that would be my only gripe about the current playoff format (if playoffs are necessary)- if there must be playoffs, then at least let the highest ranked club keep home-field advantage throughout all of the playoffs. They also can stand to get away from the entire conference thing when it comes to seeding. If you want to keep 2 conferences, fine- but then you can seed things 1-8 based on points.

i hate both the Crew and the Redbulls, but even i was rooting for the Crew.... simply b/c it would have been a joke if the Redbulls won it..... a team barely coasts into the playoffs due to some lucky turnouts should NOT be deemed league winners....

Redevil- i agree that its very unlikely that the league will start taking the SS seriously.... they should definately rename the Cup, and simply make it an extra quality tourny at the end of the season..... i know the SS and Cup winners get the same benefits as far as the intl' tournys go, but we should focus on the SS as league winners, and not just a "best record award"

Bayer would be crazy not to work a deal - afterall his MLS experience and playing time - Donovan is equal if not better than Messi and he will make Bayer an inmediate contender.
As I also said befo', Donovan is 10 times better than all the Arsenal Mids' so Arsenal should bid for him as well he will definetaly make a big difference he is a play maker and makes everyone around him rather better.

November 24, 2008  02:05 PM ET

Oh, and while the "finals" were supposedly "nearly" sold out, there were a TON of empty seats at the MLS Cup final. I asked before, "will they fill the stadium?" Someone thought so. From what I could see, that clearly was not the case. This neutral zone thing seems pretty silly for a final. Even though the CC fans were loud and present all night, imagine if the game was in Columbus how festive it would have been!

Man, this is almost as funny/over-the-top as your anti-illegal-immigrant tirades!

November 24, 2008  02:18 PM ET

So...Landon is 10 times better than Cesc Fabregas?
Interesting...and if that is the case...does that mean Landon could have started in Spain's Starting XI? Because during Euro 2008 - Cesc didn't start all that much.

Based on that logic - is Landon better than Xaxi?

Why does anyone even reply back to that garbage?

"I" must stand for Ignorant or Idiot or Imbecile...........

nor the players considering he called schelotto the crew captain when everyone and there brother knows its hejduk. rob stone had to correct him in front of everybody. then he proceeds to walk off stage without a word. what a hack. he BETTER let LD go, and no way have they not heard a word or even a peep from bayern about this. and this whole conference/playoff thing is a joke.

That's almost as good as Lalas shotgunning the can of Red Bull at the end of the pre-game show.
