Paolo Maldini's inevitable retirement at the end of the season has sparked a list of potential transfer targets that could attempt to fill the captain's boots. Reports in the peninsula suggest that Milan have eight names on that transfer list, including a number of top class stoppers. The main candidate is considered to be Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos, while Fluminense's Thiago Silva, Bayern Munich's Breno, Bayer Leverkusen's Vidal and Sao Paulo's Miranda are all highly regarded and therefore highly sought after by the Rossoneri.

Are we really sure Maldini is retiring?
He said he was retiring roughly around this same time last season...and changed his mind.

I suppose if he hangs it up for Milan...he could always play for the Galaxy.
At worst he'd be an upgrade from Abel Xavier.

I don't see Ramos leaving. He's born and bred Real and as the 2nd best wing back in the world (behind Lahm) Real would be dumb to get rid of him.

He's actually a Sevilla product, just another RM mercenary. I don't see AC splashing on him, they need a centre back more than a wing back.

My bet is Thiago Silva only because it seems that AC goes crazy for the Brazilians.

Sergio Ramos has been unhappy at Real of late. I don't see Real Madrid selling him though because they have absolutely no one to replace him. Real's defence is in shambles so maybe they will get inot bidding for the aforementioned players.

Yea, my mistake, shoulda checked wikipedia before posting, I've been doing that a lot lately, still one of the best wing backs in the world, real would dumb to sell him, not out of the realm of possibilities though

Yes, he has been unhappy because the manager is locking him the backfield and telling to stop making his runs forward so much--ie. restricting his habits to fly up the wing at a moments notice...this has made him unhappy. if that continues, a move isn't impossible--but ironically, SR can play CB as well. He's done it before. He just prefers the freedom of being a back...

PS And I do think the Maldini would be much better than X-man...

November 24, 2008  01:01 PM ET

...in the MLS....

November 24, 2008  01:12 PM ET

It's not as if Maldini is still the rock in that defense that he once was. They replaced him 5 years ago when he began to show his age. This is a dumb article. Maldini's replacement now needs to be replaced.

Well, he still was playing 30 plus games a year until the 05-06 season, so you must be exaggerating a little--and he still plays 17 or 18 games a year now.

Nevertheless, it would be fun to see him play a year in the MLS and teach some his fundementals to the MLS lads...

Real Madrid and the press better not screw up. The press has tried to make a pariah out of Ramos. He's under form right now, which is normal for a lot of players. Schuster will get him back on track. But if the press and the club bosses keep scapegoating him, he might leave.

I want Ramos to play. He can fill the void that Fernando Hierro left.

November 24, 2008  02:40 PM ET

sergio will be fine at madrid, like chaco said he's getting dumped on, but if the press and higher-ups would notice, the entire real team is underperforming right now. letting him go would be the biggest mistake of the season. i know making robinho unhappy was a blunder, but letting one of the most talented backs in the world go, especially when your team is down and suffering the unholiest wrath of injuries, would be an even worse mistake. .. schuster might be inclined to let ramos make those runs up field, he actually does them pretty darn well, maybe it will create some scoring opportunities.

November 24, 2008  04:28 PM ET

Don't do it Ramos, Serie A is a downgrade from Real Madrid, the best futbol club in the world....

Zizou my man! you are crazy if Maldini was 65 or 70 he would be on par Abel Xavier, and that is only because he would need to carry an O2 tank on his back. hehe

Sergio has been a Milan target for 2 years now, the problem with luring him is that the staff at Real will not release any players to Milan unless Milan release Kaka to them. Which is drunk talk, so Milan have been playing there cards close to their chest in hopes they can get the players consent and make him force the sign to Milan. Milan's whole back line needs redone. Zambro is great, Bonera is decent, Nesta is injuried every two weeks, Kala is inconsistant, Jank is decent everyone else lack experience. Zambro is not going to around after next year. So what I see is Milan looking for one or two center backs and one solid wide like Sergio. As a Milan fan and a Sergio fan I would enjoy this transfer.

November 24, 2008  06:47 PM ET

While I disagree that anyone can fill Hierro's shoes, Big Chaco makes a very valid point. The press has been on his case ever since he came to Madrid.

November 24, 2008  06:56 PM ET

Makes sense for Milan but won't happen for precisely the reason Shini states. Real will not sell a player to AC Milan unless the deal involves Kaka, and Milan won't sell Kaka.

November 24, 2008  07:52 PM ET

ramos is an excellent player...but he's not a very defensive right back , he's mostly hanging around in the middle , or trying to create some plays...ac milan needs someone who can defend

November 24, 2008  10:26 PM ET

One of the best players in the world IMO, but he has come accustom to straying to far up the field. The Lad can defend, we all know that, so im glad Shuster is asking him to stay back a little more. It will only help him in the long run when he develops into the best full back in the world. I hope he stays in Madrid.

November 25, 2008  02:54 PM ET

Ahhh, but if you want him to improve defensively as a full-back, who better than Maldini to teach?
