Cincinnati coach blows off Vols rumors

As rumors continue to circulate about University of Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly as the leading candidate for the head coaching vacancy at Tennessee, Kelly has told his players not to pay attention to them. Based on the incentives in the contract extension that Kelly signed after last season, he likely would make an additional $294,000 if the Bearcats beat Syracuse. That total includes $100,000 for a BCS bowl appearance and $50,000 for winning the Big East title. Kelly gets another $50,000 if the Bearcats, who are currently ranked 16th this week in the Associated Press poll, finish in the Top 25. Kelly will receive $14,000 if the Bearcats (9-2) win 10 games, $30,000 for their three wins over Top 25 opponents, and $50,000 if UC's home attendance average is between 27,501 and 32,000. The Bearcats average 31,477. And he'll receive another $50,000 if he is named Big East coach of the year, an honor he'll be considered for strongly given what UC has done in the face of so many injuries at quarterback. That would increase Kelly's incentives to $344,000 on top of the $1.2 million compensation that he's guaranteed, which would bring his compensation for the year to $1,544,000.

Kelly can flat out coach and some big schools money will lure him away from Cinncinatti.

November 24, 2008  07:51 AM ET

Hmmm...$1.5MM vs the $3+MM UcheaT would throw at him. Super tough decision there.

November 24, 2008  08:10 AM ET

They only average 31,000 in attendance? That is about the size of one of Tennessee's end zones.

November 24, 2008  08:34 AM ET

They are ranked 16th. Doesn't sound like he's earning his money.

November 24, 2008  09:12 AM ET

of course he'll come if they offer it. Yes, Tenn plays second fiddle to Florida and Alabama in the SEC, but give me a break, if Kelly wants to advance as a coach he'd jump at the chance to coach Tenn.

November 24, 2008  09:14 AM ET

He's not going to go to Tennesse, honest.

Of course, when he orders all of the cell phones confiscated from his players at the bowl game, all bets are off!

November 24, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Alot more money at UT, but there is a boat load more pressure to go with it. 1.5 mill aint exactly minimum wage, and Taking the Big East title ain't exactly as hard as winning in the SEC.

I'd stay put.

still clever as ever with UcheaT huh?

by linking kelly???s reassurance to his players and the bonus money he still has left to earn this season, this article is actually implying that Kelly is still going to look at UT (that is how it is spelled) but he doesn't want the apathy of his players to hurt his wallet.

With the new taxes about to hit, he'll probably take $5.63 more home than before. Not really worth it!!

November 24, 2008  11:27 AM ET

stay with cincy' have a chance of winning the big east each season and go to a bcs bowl...go to ut and be lucky to finish 3rd in the sec east and pile up 7-5 and 6-6 seasons. no thanks keep the extra 1.5 mil...I ain't greedy.

November 24, 2008  11:52 AM ET

sethgator well said what nobody is telling you who is going to be paying you after you get fired from UT in three years cause they aren't willing to wait and rebuild

Whatever his chronological age, it's clear that GatorBaitor's emotional maturity is that of a prepubescent boy. Despite several posters' attempts to encourage him to raise the level and tone of his discourse, he's far to impressed with his own sophomoric coinage to heed wiser counsel. Perhaps, it's best if we just ignore him.

Badgerfan,
If Kelly is as good as everybody says, it shouldn't take him 3 years to come out on top. UT had a very good recruiting class this past year & there is still a lot of talent @ UT (just need some good coaching to mold them). He should have plenty of talent to work with. It didn't take Urban Meyer 3 years to rise to the top. If Kelly is that good "CREAM always rises to the top !!!!

November 24, 2008  12:23 PM ET

Of course he's not going to address coaching rumors while his team is in the running for a BCS bowl bid. This is a non-story and means nothing about what he will do after the season.

UT isn't a "3rd in the SEC East" job when they have a good coach. Saying otherwise shows a huge amount of ignorance about that program. Gator fans are just used to Fulmer, who is a mediocre coach at best.

Like other coaches held up as possible candidates, Kelly will publically dismiss talk of UT and refocus the press et al upon their current team's challenges and fortunes. Expect nothing of substance to surface until after the season ends.

There's more to life and coaching than the money. Jim Grobe's been at Wake Forest for eight seasons.

Silly! Even with a terrible accountant, 74 percent (that's Bush) of $1.5 million is $1.11 million, while 71.1 percent (Obama) of 3 million is 2.133 million. That's a 48 percent raise instead of a 50 percent raise. What's the big deal?

he and urban are a lot alike.with one exception...urban is located in a state where talent is rich and plentiful, ut is located in a state that isn't even recognized for prep talent in football.he's better off stayin at uc,recruiting under recruited cincy kids, stealing a few from the state of florida and stealing all the mid west kids who dont get osu, psu,um,nd offers.if he goes to ut he'll win but not enough.he wants bcs wins and ut cant get him that.its not the 90's anymore man
