For months, he had been sapped of his power, and his batting average plummeted. But Chase Utley didn't want to make excuses, so he gritted his teeth, kept playing and refused to publicly acknowledge the worst-kept secret in the Phillies' clubhouse. Something was wrong, seriously wrong, with his right hip. Now, the story can be told. Now, after the Phillies revealed Thursday that Utley will undergo surgery next week in New York that likely will cause him to miss the start of the 2009 season and could threaten to sideline him until June, it's evident just how much pain he played through.

This makes his postseason performance on both offense and defense that more impressive. Chase Utley, you are the man.

He is definitely the man. He was on his way to the MVP before that injury so thats even more dissapointing for him but at least he won a World Series.

nice. he'll be remembered as a hero, gutting out serious pain, not making excuses when his numbers went south, just focused on winning a world series

What if he does'nt heal right and can never play again. Will it have been worth it then.

Phillies may not make the playoffs next year.

Anythings possible but seriously doubt it. This is a team that will be even more hungry this year to win.
