Mets backing away from Lowe

Derek Lowe is a hotter commodity in the free-agent market than the Mets envisioned, a development that is forcing them to rethink their plan of signing the 35-year-old righthander and plugging him into Oliver Perez's spot in the starting rotation. The Mets aren't conceding anything yet, but privately they admit they didn't expect Lowe to be in such high demand, and they worry that with the Yankees and Red Sox in the hunt, they may have to lower their sights for a starting pitcher. They don't expect to outbid either the Yankees or Red Sox for Lowe, if it comes to that, especially with agent Scott Boras putting out the word that he's looking for a five-year deal in the $15 million-$16 million a year range. And the Mets think Boras will price Perez too high as well, so they are looking at other options. They have interest in Jon Garland, the free-agent righthander who went 14-8 for the Angels despite a 4.90 ERA, and they would consider trading for Javier Vazquez, who went 12-16 with a 4.67ERA for the White Sox.

I'm with you on that one. AND Boras is looking for a 5 year deal? Give me a break. Sox aren't going to sign a 35 year old pitcher for 5 years @ 15/mil a year.

Wait it out..... I haven't seen anyone jump all over these big demands yet...... is Lowe really a MUST have for anyone??..... He's really a nice #3 starter, so let's get real......

I'm sorry. $15-16 mil a year for Derek Lowe??????? That's insane.

As Sir Robin just said........ he's a # 3 starter. At best.

How does Boras figure a 35 year old pitcher should get a 5 year deal? He would be 40 at the end of it and last time I checked this isn't 2001 where the league isn't testing for HGH and steroids so how do they figure Lowe will hang around to finish the deal? And $16M per year? Is that now the going rate for medioctiry?

All Boras needs to do is find one stat that matches or exceeds that of a star player and he will exploit that to make the case that his client should get the same kind of contract.

November 24, 2008  10:52 AM ET

lowe is not worth that money but being a boras client im sure none of his clients are less than that per....he's around the 10-12 at BEST...and even thats a risk at this point...

Lowe has to get signed ASAP (from his perspective). If the Yanks and Sox and Mets buy up CC, Burnett, and others, the money pool for Lowe is going to dry up right quick. It would be a gamble to wait to get picked up by whomever is foiled at getting the tier 1 pitchers.

November 24, 2008  11:17 AM ET

If the Mets really need a #3 starter Garland sounds like a better option. Perez has great stuff, but you never know who you're gonna get with him. Let him so Southwest to the Rangers or Padres. Lowe would be a good pickup, but what Boras is asking is laughable. Let the Skankees and Sawk fight over him.

I just want to know why every average pitcher now feels they are worth $16M a year. Since when did that become the baseline salary for starting pitching?

November 24, 2008  11:41 AM ET

Lowe should not be given any more than 3 years. PERIOD
- his non-injury history is GREAT.....
but he's now in his late 30s

November 24, 2008  12:30 PM ET

Anyone who pays more than $10M yr/ 3 yrs. is crazy. Has Yanks written all over it.

Derek Lowe is a deeeeewche

November 24, 2008  04:19 PM ET

Lowe can either get a high yearly salary or a 4 year contract. I can't see him getting both at his age.

November 24, 2008  05:29 PM ET

Ummm... Duh! 5 years $16 mill per? What a joke! 3 years $37.5... tops!
