Big changes in store for Pro Bowl

Look for this to be the last year the Pro Bowl is played the week after the Super Bowl. As I reported on NBC last night, the league likely will announce in the next few weeks the moving of the game to the weekend before the Super Bowl -- either on Saturday night, Sunday, or Monday night, depending on network preference -- as part of the pre-Super Bowl buildup. In addition, I look for the league to play more than half of future Pro Bowls on the mainland instead of Honolulu, mostly at the same site of the Super Bowl to maximize attention and focus on an all-star game that has become totally irrelevant. Next season the Super Bowl is in Miami. I expect the rotation to begin then, with the Pro Bowl quite possibly at Dolphins Stadium either eight, seven or six days before the Super Bowl.

Before the Super Bowl? None of the Super Bowl participants will play, obviously, if that's the case. I don't think I've ever watched an entire Pro Bowl though.

No coach in his right mind would let any of his SB players even think about playing in the Pro Bowl. Voting should then turn into 'Pick your favorite player who's not on a SB-contender.' Talk about the beginning of the end. The Pro Bowl already sucked. Soon it will be a dinosaur ready for extinction.

Instead of playing football in the Pro Bowl why don't they just make a contest out of playground games. None of these guys are going to risk injury by playing the game that is their livelihood. They could have team jump rope, duck duck goose, red rover. People might actually watch it.

November 24, 2008  12:02 PM ET

why can't it be like all the other sports where they play mid-season?

November 24, 2008  12:28 PM ET

Players do not care to play in it, they only want to be named to the all pro team:
Fans do not care to watch it, they just want to know who got named:

Sooooooo! No game. Just do like the draft, and make a big TV deal out of naming the players who make the team........Now, more would watch that... Like the NFL draft.....just what I think..

November 24, 2008  12:51 PM ET

Pro Bowl should not be a game. The Pro Bowl should be an award. This is stupid. I can see a promotional event with lots of pictures and hoopla but a game is kind of silly. I like the duck duck goose idea.

November 24, 2008  01:02 PM ET

So they want the locals to pony up for two "big show" games.......lot's of luck to them....

November 24, 2008  01:06 PM ET

End this game, not worth it. I understnad that the Redskins currently have up to 20 players leading in the poll due to a strong internet campaign for voting....it is a farce.

Not disrepecting some of the Skins but the voting process is broken. Just like last year Dallas had 13--what a joke. They earned maybe 5-6 based on their 13-3 season and perfromance.

The voting is completely screwed up. I agree.

Because then absolutely no team would allow their players to play. On second thought, let's do that. Maybe that way they'll finally end this game.

Make the pro bowl a flag football game and use a nerf ball. This would help prevent players from backing out due to non existent injuries or other excuses. Also, the two teams with the worst records have to provide players for cheer leading squads

At the Pro Bowl a few years ago the Pats had sent this wonderful rookie RB. He tore his ACL playing flag football before the game. Names killing me here. Roberts? Help me out.

November 24, 2008  04:35 PM ET

as long as its a flag football game that most of the popular players avoid, the pro bowl will continue to be an afterthought

November 24, 2008  05:11 PM ET

I haven't watched the Pro Bowl since I was a kid, and I have no intention of ever watching it, no matter what they do with it. They cannot make it relevant. None of these types of games are relevant in pro sports, no matter what the MLB tried to do with that. They hurt the athletes, rip off the fans, and offer nothing to their respective sports. I think the Pro Bowl's ONLY value is to leave it where it is now, after the Super Bowl, so people can get one last football fix before we're wallowing in the wasteland that is the basketball/hockey season.

November 24, 2008  07:13 PM ET

At one time the pro bowl was actually nfl all-stars vs the previous years champions, kind of the same as the old collage all-star game that was played until the mid 70's.

November 24, 2008  08:38 PM ET

Does anyone still give a crap about the Pro Bowl?

November 24, 2008  10:14 PM ET

I give a crap about the Pro Bowl. I think it can be a fun event. Some complain that it's a meaningless game. I say, that's the freakin point. It's a GAME! If players didn't want the Pro Bowl, first off, they wouldn't have it; the NFLPA would have the game dropped before we knew what happened. And second, if players didn't want to play in it, there wouldn't be bonuses structured into contracts for being selected.

Yes, the voting system is flawed. Yes, it's in Hawaii every year making it neigh impossible for Joe Fan to go. Yes, it could be better. But I ask you this:
What could be more awesome than the best football players in the league coming together to have fun and play a schoolyard game?

THAT'S how you fix the Pro Bowl. You have all the coaches in the league decide the best players from each team - they can't pick from their own team. The Super Bowl coaches build their squads from there. You get Kurt Warner out there drawing plays in the dirt for Adrian Peterson and Larry Fitzgerald. Nothing on the line, no hype, not even going 100%. Just good old schoolyard ball. Give everyone a 100k check with a 25k bonus per person to the winning side. And nice watches, who doesn't like a nice watch. Players will love it. Fans will love it. All will be right with the world. Thank you and good night.
