Cubs leading Peavy sweepstakes

Checked in on the Jake Peavy Watch today with Kevin Towers. The San Diego Padres GM isn't giving up hope that he can find a new home for Peavy, one of the game's best righthanded pitchers whose salary is not too big for the Padres' diminishing payroll. So I won't give up asking about it. Towers disagreed with me that the best chance for a deal might still be the Braves. At the moment, he appears to be favoring the Cubs' chances. "I think there's a chance of maybe putting together a deal with Chicago,'' Towers said. "At least I know he's willing to go there.'' But in the same breath, Towers added that he didn't anticipate anything happen anytime soon, and explained why. Towers mentioned two complications. One is that the Cubs' ownership situation is unsettled (there could be a sale, though there's a lot of doubt now whether anyone interested will want to come up with the cash in this economy). The other complication is that they will probably need a third team to do a deal with the Cubs.

I'm sure Peavy's wife enjoys all of this speculation.

id give ya a couple prospects....a Felix Pie, Josh Vitters, Kevin hart, Billy Petrick, and one major leaguer, maybe someone such as...ronny cedeno? so you got a future corner infielder (3rd base most likely) 2 pitchers, and a major league, ready to start, shortstop in ronny cedeno....

that should be able to do a good enough trade and you know thats something i wont mind giving up to get him....its not too much its just enough..

Not gonna happen... the Braves offered up a MUCH MUCH MUCH (pretty sure I can't put that word in enough to fully prove my point her) better package than that. Atlanta was going to give up an up and coming Star SS, not one but 2 highly rated pitching prospects as well as a 5 tool OF that could be the next Sizemore. Yet SD still wanted more.

Would love to see Peavy with the Cubs, I just do not know if they will pull the trigger. Guess we will know if and when it happens...didn't Towers say he wanted to have it done before Thanksgiving....

Nice package if they were all going to pan out, out of all of those do you actually think they would have all made it to the Majors and had a impact? Maybe that is why the Braves put that package together, they knew something and Towers saw through it??? Just asking

It still bothers me that they are willing to give up Peavy
he's 26 and an ACE......
Extremely unfair to padre fans & I hope Selig somehow
blocks ANY trade such as this that is CLEARLY a salary dump

Why block it? If they're willing to make the trade then let them. Same with last year's trade that was Pau Gasol for a bag of chips and a paper clip. If they make the deal, why block stupidity?

Selig step in because of a salary dump, get realistic why would you think he would do anything like that? He did not do it when the Marlins did it after winning a World Series and that was darn near the starting 9, this is one pitcher, young an ace I agree, how do you not know that Peavy wants this, maybe he wants to win

Ah, baseball. The sport where the rich only get richer.

if he wants to win, then why'd he go to the Cubs?

Padres are stupid to trade him.... he's pretty young and they could build around him with other trades.

Padres are dumping salary because their owner is getting divorced.

Leave it to a White Sux fan to make a comment like that, I could careless if he goes to the Cubs, would like to see it, but my point was that even if Padres are dumping salary, Selig will not step in and stop it, he didn't with the Marlins (who did it twice) why would he do it now?

November 25, 2008  10:06 AM ET

Woo Hoo prospects and Money, do you really win when you give up that much. Prospects or money I would say.

Well, he may be a White Sox fan, but he DOES have a point.

and like I said before if you read what I wrote, I never mentioned anything about him going to the Cubs, the guy stated that he thinks Selig should step in because the Padres are dumping and I made 2 points that Selig would not step in and how do we not know that Peavy wanted to be traded, not once did I say anything about the Cubs in that comment

November 25, 2008  11:48 AM ET

Why wouldn't the Padres want a guy like Yunel Escobar to replace a diminishing Khalil Greene at short? Yunel is a 5-tool player now and will be for years to come. Greene peaked to early or was just a fluke...either way the Padres will be a sub-.500 team anyway. All they have is Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez to rely on.

November 25, 2008  11:48 AM ET

Why wouldn't the Padres want someone like Yunel Escobar to take over for the fluke they have at short right now (a.k.a. Khalil Greene)? Escobar is and will be for many years a 5-tool player...almost Jeter-esque. I've liked the Braves for a long time, and Yunel is a great player, but pitching is a huge concern for them. Glavine, Smoltz, and Hampton all free agents...and we all know what Jo Jo Reyes is capable of...NOTHING. They need to pull this trade off.
