Could Varitek keep Teixeira from Red Sox?

The big stars almost always go for the best offer, no matter what. Friendship usually doesn't determine where the $100-million-plus players sign. But it's interesting to wonder whether the Red Sox's chances to land star free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira could be hindered by their current impasse in negotiations involving his good friend Jason Varitek. The current tenor of Varitek's talks may not impact Texiera's thinking one bit. I don't know that to be the case. But the team's chances to sign Teixeira certainly aren't being helped by the fact Varitek isn't being signed quickly. If the Red Sox don't get Teixeira, it'll probably be because they don't want to go the eight years or more he'll almost surely be able to get elsewhere. But if they budged a little in the case Varitek, it might help. It surely couldn't hurt.

No, not really. Varitek is a movable object. Tex is a desired commodity. Pleeze.

This is a business, Varitek knows that and so does Mark. So we're suppose to believe he might leave money on the table because they slighted his "good friend?"

November 25, 2008  07:25 AM ET

If Varitek understood it was strictly a business he would not have been banging the hot chick in addition to his wife and creating a mess for his team. Are we to assume Varitek's wife is not a Texiera's good friend?

November 25, 2008  08:18 AM ET

If Teixiera is as greedy as most players are, having his buddy on the same team or not will not affect his decision to play for Boston Its not like he's a pitcher and part of his decision is based on Variteks excellent knowledge and experience behind the plate. He will follow the cash and can hang out with his buddy all winter now that Varitek is divorced. Money talks and loyalty walks.

If Varitek is even in the discussion of Boston's plans
for the future....the team is in trouble.

He had a FANTASTIC run with Boston- but he needs
to be politely shown the door- he's DONE

I could be wrong, but I get the sincere feeling you are against stupid things.

November 25, 2008  09:13 AM ET

answer is no...this is the lead story?

November 25, 2008  09:31 AM ET

Terrible lead story. Boras doesn't care if Sox sign Tek or not as it has no bearing on if Tex signs there. Whoever offers the most gets Tex and that is it. No loyalty or friendship or anything like that is at work here.

Agreed, but unless they have a solution in mind, they may have to offer him a two year deal while they work on a replacement. However, I'd rather see them go with someone younger with upside potential, if they can find that person.

whats happened to T&R -- its devolved into wild speculation and self-quoting on the part of SI.com writers. For the record, it doesn't qualify as a rumor YOU'RE the only one with the random thought -- that's called a blog. Can you TRY to get a source or two sometimes, for crying out loud? Do you know anyone that plays baseball?

Did you hear the latest, btw -- RUMOR: Varitek To Sign With Patriots to Play Linebacker. At least, (I) think that would be neat.

Yeah, this quoting of CNNSI blogs is really lazy.

Is Heyman paid by SI or "The Boras Corporation"?

November 25, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Must be a slow news day. It's times like these you wish George Steinbrenner was still around. He'd have made some ridiculous statement and thrown a few names in there and the media would be going wild with Yankees going to sign [insert muliple player names here].

SI but he does some under the table business for Boras Inc.

Yanks giving Posada all that cash is dumb when he is injury prone and not the hitter he once was earlier in career. Yanks always over spend and of course the sox do to at times. To give Varitek money like Posada would be wrong at this stage in his career. Boras just tries to squeeze every last penny out of an organization for his clients with utter disregard for the fans. That's why it costs $1,000.00 for a box of popcorn.
Varitek has full command of the pitching staff and is a consumate team player and gentleman but I can't stand seeing him at the plate. He should just hit from the right side. He stinks lefthanded and being a righty is his natural stance. Sure if we got more power at the plate like in a Texiera and also a good hitting shortstop, then Teks bat wouldn't matter as much. It's time that vast greed from just slightly better than mediocre players be gone from all of sports. That won't happen in our lifetime, but the poor to middle-class do have a dream of being able to take a family of four to a game someday.....sighhhhhh.....someday.

If they are such good friends maybe Texiera will take less money to sign with the Sox under the condition that Varitek gets a contract as well.......Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!

Wouldn't be the first time Boras cut a deal involving 2 clients. He agreed to include the posting fee for Dice K in the deal but only if the Sox signed JD Drew to a 5 year $15M per deal. Not that we cna prove this happened but it did.
