Notre Dame won't turn down bowl offer

While Notre Dame has turned down bowl invitations in the past, coach Charlie Weis said his team won't pass up a trip to the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, even if the Irish lose a lopsided game to No. 5 USC in Saturday's season finale. Sun Bowl executive director Bernie Olivas reiterated Monday that he would remain interested in the Irish even if they finish 6-6. Notre Dame would play the third-place team from the Pac-10 in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31. Oregon is 8-3 overall and 6-2 in the Pac-10 heading into Saturday's game at Oregon State. If the Ducks lose to the Beavers and California (7-4, 5-3) beats Washington, Oregon and Cal would tie for third and the Sun Bowl could choose either team. There are scenarios that could prevent Sun Bowl officials from inviting Notre Dame. Olivas said 7-5 teams from the Big East must have been invited to a bowl before he can offer a bid to a 6-6 Notre Dame team. With two weeks remaining, four Big East teams have seven wins and one has six.

And people wonder why they're so despised...

Charlie, Charlie, Charlie..... What are you thinking???? Oregon or Cal will walk all over ND the way you coach!

Just be happy with the six wins and call it a year. Let some other team play, you know a team that SHOULD play in a bowl game. (Or a team that might win)

Maybe they (the bowl committee) will make a new bowl for "old powerhouses" this year it could be a rematch of the two highest all-time winning percentage teams in college football........ Michigan v's Notre Dame in the Mud bowl!! Only on NBC! :)

November 25, 2008  08:21 AM ET

I like that idea Sexton but they should probably call it the toilet bowl

November 25, 2008  08:32 AM ET

Of course they won't turn down a payday. And they will get smoked by a mid-level Pac-10 team, finish the year 6-7, and somehow still be ranked about #12 preseason next year.

I like the idea Sexton but it's a pay day. It would be tough to walk away from money.

Why would RR want that? Only to have Michigan lose again to Notre Dame? Man, as a Wolverines fan I am just happy that the season is over.

Damn!!!

As the article states, they can only offer a 6-6 team this bowl if a team with a better record (7 wins or better) is not available for the conference tie-in, which is for ND/Big12/Big East, for the opponent to the Pac-10. The big east has 5 already that have 7 or more wins, with a possible 6th. They will only get one BCS slot, so that leaves 4 or 5 teams. The Big12 has 6 teams already with 7 or more wins, with a possible 7 teams. They will get 2 BCS bids, but that still leaves a lot of teams ahead of ND if they lose to USC.

They should go to a bowl to keep their consecutive loss streak going.

I hope they get matched up against the Buckeyes , we need to win a bowl game this year.

Turn down a Bowl offer? After losing to a bottom 10 team---a barely 6-6 team gets a Bowl offer? Who would watch it? Notre Dame hasnt won a Bowl game in over 10 years anyway.U$C can pay their players with no penalties and now this BCS nonsense, Whats CFB coming to?

IF they lose to USC???

Shouldn't Weis be happy with .500? Why go for another losing season, 6-7, even if it is a bowl game? Snicker.

November 25, 2008  12:18 PM ET

If a bowl offers ND why should ND be despised. The Bowl that makes the offer should be despised.

November 25, 2008  12:25 PM ET

Someone please pull the network plug on ND until they grow a competitive pair. This blows and Chuck Wagon needs to exit... with pride and no buyout. Yea - like that'll happen. This sux.

Any one of a bunch of lousey bowls would love to have n.d. They have built in ratings with that religion that refers to child rape as 'clergy abuse'. Those 'people' will watch n.d. play anywhere anytime, the networks get rating and the bowl will put butts in the seats.

November 25, 2008  01:07 PM ET

I love it, another losing season for ol' nd...

November 25, 2008  01:31 PM ET

Kind of a last desperate gamble. Weis closes the season on a win and he leaves less of a bad taste in the boosters' mouths. He closes on a loss, I would not be surprised to see him get his golden parachute.

November 25, 2008  01:33 PM ET

Whoever wins Friday's WVU Pitt game should be in that Sun Bowl, not the pathetic Irish.

Again, San Diego St, Michigan, Purdue, Stanford, Washington, Navy. Those are your wins, on a schedule that you created, absolutely disgusting, do us all a favor and stay home.

November 25, 2008  02:02 PM ET

Yeah, as an Irish fan when you see articles like this and how it's unfair to other teams because of the favortism shown by big corporations, and their knowlegde of the revenue possibilities. Is kind of bitter-sweet because in the first place we wanna go to a bowl and on the other side of the story it's obvious we are given favortism. Thats always been a reason for disdain of the bowl selection committees and their wacky match-ups and reasons for who is the NC. What a bunglefuk.
