Wizards' firing upsets Nets coach

With one cruel swipe of a pink slip, Lawrence Frank became the longest serving coach in the Eastern Conference Monday when Eddie Jordan was fired by the Wizards. But Frank was hardly celebrating the distinction, certainly not at the cost of his friend and former colleague on the Nets bench, who was fired along with assistant Mike O'Koren, the former Hudson Catholic star and Net whom Frank also considers a friend. In fact, Frank was very upset by the news at Monday's practice, and brought it up to reporters unsolicited. "I'm very, very disappointed, not just because he's a close personal friend, as well as Mike, but when he came to Washington (they) hadn't been to the playoffs in like 20 something years," Frank said, "(and they) go there four straight years and to do what he did last year, where you could have made a very easy argument that he should have been the coach of the year, or at least co-coach of the year along with Byron (Scott)."

Making the playoffs 4 years in a row is good, but coach of the year? i think NOT.

November 25, 2008  08:23 AM ET

This is all business and Frank should know that and it happened to him already. It happens to most of the coaches now except for 1-3 coaches such as Phil, Pops, and Sloan.

November 25, 2008  08:40 AM ET

Not sure Eddie deserved to be fired considering he was playing without Arenas and Hayward, but this is a business. Shouldn't be taken this personal.

November 25, 2008  08:44 AM ET

Frank better watch out for his job. If he does not show something this year, by next year there will be whispers.

Agree with this comment too. He will get a pass this year because of the overhauled roster but if he gets off to a slow start next season he's gone.

he should have been fired before last year after the AWFUL
job he did....with the vince/Kidd/RJ teams

Eddie Jordan should not have been fired. His best players are down with injury and his record over the last six years is as solid as can be. At least he'll get another coaching job, if he wants one.

November 25, 2008  09:47 AM ET

I'll admit I was very surprised to hear he was fired. From a business perspective, they definitely didn't do it right. They extend the man's contract and then fire him two months later. It isn't his fault two of his best players are out with injuries. I hope they stay in the gutter now for at least 5 years.

November 25, 2008  09:53 AM ET

This isn't right, but but it has become standard operating procedure. The team isn't doing well, so fire the coach. It doesn't matter that the new coach won't do any better--"we're moving in a new direction."

This will be the beginning of the end for the current Wizards team. Arenas has a bum knee and will probably never get back to where he was before all this injury business started, and he has loooooooads of the teams money owed in salary. Jamison will probably eventually want to be traded to a team that can challenge for the championship as he is a great second, or even third man. Same with Butler. Butler, Jamison and Arenas sound great on paper, but not on the court although all three are all-stars.

November 25, 2008  10:43 AM ET

This story sounds more like gossip than news reporting. "Newark Star-Ledger" had a page to fill and they did it in the most boring way they can.

That and Eddie Jordan will find a job next season or maybe before that if some teams are smart enough.

November 25, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Eddie is a damn good coach he will land another job soon...

I wonder if Frank was so upset when they fired Byron after two Finals appearances. Frank must have forgotten that the Bullets were in the playoffs in 1997 and the late 80's. Long time, but not twenty years.
Strange that Frank has kept his job this long although he underachieved with three All-Stars, with the exception of this season. Since he was promoted, several superior coaches have been fired - coaches that could have done more with the talent that he had. I wonder if he's just the caretaker of the position until the team moves and/or the 2010 free agent season arrives.

As a Wizards fan who watches most of their games, Eddie Jordan was the last person I would contribute to our 1-10 start. We dont have the roster currently to fully implement what Jordan wanted, which is DEFENSE and BALL CONTROL. The only player in our roster who gives it defensively night in and night out is Caron Butler. Dixon tries but his size is a problem and McGee shows excellent promise but hes still a rookie. Its a shame the coach has to pay for the inabilities of his players to perform as they should. Ive always respected Jamisons game, but I never liked it. Though he'll give you 20 & 10, hes gonna give up 20 & 10 on the other side of the ball as well. To me we need to find a legit interior presence on BOTH sides of the ball and stress Gil (when he returns) to become a truer point guard and distributer with an emphasis on man to man DEFENSE. Other than Gil, Caron, Nick Young and McGee, everybody on that team is expendable! I'd love to see Chris Bosh or Amare Stoudamire in a Wizards jersey with Caron Butler and Nick Young.

Eddie shouldn't get fired. At least not until he got to play with all his players and still kept losing. B/c not only Arenas was injured, but Caron was too last season. Not only were his two All-Stars sidelines, many role players were injured too, such as Antonio Daniels, Thomas, Haywood and Stevenson. His line-ups several times featured the most number of unknown players. yet they made the play-offs regularly b/c hey still came out and competed. Even in their losses this season.

November 25, 2008  12:15 PM ET

they gave Arenas a 111 million dollar contract after he played just 13 games last season and was virtually nonexistent in the 4 games that he played in the playoffs.
now they fire Eddie Jordan and the assistant coach as if it's their fault that they're 1-10 this season. Magical!

November 25, 2008  01:39 PM ET

Why should he NOT have been Co-Coach of the Year? Did you take a look at the roster Eddie was working with last year?(this yr also for that matter) If your a real NBA fan you would know that he definitely deserved the award. No low post game, Arenas hurt almost the entire year but they still make the playoffs??? No way this guy deserved to be fired

Well washingtons's loss I personally think Vinny D will be the next to go

Exactly Frank hasn't done half the job of Scott, the guy he replaced, yet he's still collecting checks. Tell me what he brings to the table b/c I can't for the life of me see da King come to NJ in 2010, to listen to Barney Phife. He's had 3 All-Stars and yet his team never even made it to the Conference Finals? ****? Wall Street has been managed better than he has handled the Nets. Its disingenuous of him to feign concern for a friend, when he came into his job the same way. At least Eddie gets his pay right?

I don't know if its just me, but it seems black coaches don't get the same "pass" as their white counterparts. This smacks of racism like the Avery Johnson firing. How do you explain either one considering both guys are former Coaches of the year just years removed. Oh wait, just like Scott was in NJ. Someone explain these 3 firings to me???

November 25, 2008  04:01 PM ET

Your telling me Dunleavy in L.A., Nelson in Golden State, Del Negro in Chi-town are better coaches than Jordan or Johnson? What are you smoking? P.J. Carlesimo never deserved a 2nd chance yet he managed to find a 'sucker' to loan him a job for a year and 2 months. Hell IMO, all the guys I mention above should be fired. In addition, I'd get rid of George Karl, the Griz''s coach, Minnesota, and a few other no-name guys in a few remote locales. How a coach like Nelson & Karl keep their jobs when they only have a one dimensional philosophy is beyond explanation. Its no wonders their team are entertaining, yet repeatedly get ousted in first rounds....
