No Sabathia deadline for Yankees

The Yankees have not yet set a deadline for their $140-million, six-year offer to free-agent starting pitcher CC Sabathia, and according to someone familiar with their thinking, they have no intention to pull the offer anytime soon. New Yankees boss Hal Steinbrenner was responding to a reporter's question when he said, "We made an offer. It's not going to be there forever.'' And all he meant was exactly that. Not forever. It appears now that the Yankees aren't about to set a deadline -- at least not yet. The Dodgers, Giants, Angels, Red Sox and incumbent Brewers all have interest in Sabathia. But to this point, no one has emerged to play in the Yankees' dollar stratosphere, and they remain the favorite to win the Sabathia Derby.

There is no deadline. Just a rich idiot running his mouth with no care for it's consequences. See it all the time at work with some gal thinkin she's it and that she's the one. It is all a little retarded and the Yankees need to cool down on their stoic position of aristocracy. Money is not everything in life especially when you already have some coin.

It's obvious they need Sabathia, it was stupid to act as if they didn't. Sabathia is legit. I am hoping he stays with the Brewers somehow, that'd be a nice story.

I hate when people use the word coin.

SO they can abuse him next year too?

why are you so bitter?

they asked him a question and he responded
how do you get 'aristocracy' and 'idiot' from that ?

Well aside from the Brewers offer of $100M and the Yankees 6 year $140M I haven't seen any other team make an official bid. So how can these teams be in the supposed race if no one has made an offer? And as much as the Brewers gave it a good effort if CC wanted to stay there he would have taken the deal by now. I think he was hoping for the Dodgers, Giants or Angels to make a bid by now so he could accept it but that has yet to happen and now the only other deal on the table is to go to NY where he will be far away from the west coast and never get to hit.

Yesterday the offer was not forever...today...no time limit...

He got it from his E-Harmony profile.

Maybe this is like that whole Arod is never playing in NY again that Hank told the press last winter and then we signed him to the biggest deal in history.

I do not think he was talking to me if you read all the comments there BBPS, and what team are you a bandwagon jumper, fairweather fan????

November 25, 2008  05:17 PM ET

Given Sabathia's physical condition (or lack there of), I just don't think he'll be an effective pitcher for more than 2-3 years. Yankees will regret signing him for a 6 year deal.

November 25, 2008  06:33 PM ET

They will pull the offer once he signs a contract whether it be with them or another team.

I actually agree that Sabathia for 6 years doesn't make sense (to me). If you sign any pitcher for 6 years the only way it will pay dividends in the end is if they are "Hall of Fame" caliber pitchers i.e. Greg Maddux/Roger Clemens/Mike Mussina. At this point I would say Sabathia is a perennial All-Star candidate but that's still a far cry from HOF first balloter.
