Angels shift focus to big Sabathia offer
The Angels, unwilling to meet Mark Teixeira's desire for a 10-year contract, are in discussions with CC Sabathia and could offer him a contract that approaches the $140-million bid extended to him by the New York Yankees. The Angels appear reluctant to guarantee more than seven years in a contract for Teixeira, said a source familiar with the club's thinking. They appear more likely at this time to pursue Sabathia, with an offer in the range of Johan Santana's six-year, $137.5-million contract with the New York Mets. Teixeira remains the Angels' top priority -- the club would sign him but does not want to miss out on Sabathia while waiting to see whether Teixeira's asking price falls. The Angels are not believed to have made a formal offer to either player.

I just don't see C.C. pitching more than 5 more years. If I was a GM I'd be very hesitant to give him more than a 5-year deal.

I agree with you, I said this yesterday on one of this stories, with the way the Brewers abused him the last month of the season, and his weight, he will be lucky to much more than that, he should just take the Yankee offer and know that the money is there for the next 6 years

the guy is still under 30.....fat, overworked- yes
but still under 30.
If you are giving him 5 years- what is the big deal about giving 6?
It's like the mets giving pedro the extra 4th year...
- didnt work out- but you need to do what it takes-
it's baseball- no CAP issues...so if you ahve to eat the extra
year to potentially have 3-4 prime years- gotta do it

I don't understand not wanting to give Teixeira more than 7 years but being willing to give CC 6.

Because pitchers win championships and hitters who only produce in non clutch situations are a dime a dozen. Texiera wouldnt even be on my radar since the idiots demanding a 10 year deal and he sucks in clutch situations.

I think I have to agree with you, sign CC then go on and sign Manny, that would be awesome. And cost just a little more then the 1 contract they would give to Tex plus you can't get much more clutch then Manny. It would be fun watching when they play the Red Sox. Just a little pipe dream.

Hitters like Teixeira are hardly a dime a dozen.
If I'm commiting 6-8 years and over ~140-150 million on a player, I want one who plays every day. To say nothing of the fact that I don't there has been a single 9-figure contract for a pitcher that has worked out.

And I really don't understand this non-clutch stuff. I don't know about Teixeira's regular season numbers, but in his first postseason series last season, the Red Sox couldn't get the guy out.

If the Angels offer anywhere within $15M of what the Yanks bid for CC I think they have a good shot at signing him. Granted he won't be able to hit unless the Angels decide to have him DH on the days he isn't pitching but he would be on the west coast.

I think the Dodgers will make a run at him.

Well what are they waiting for? It's almost Thanksgiving. For all they know CC could be sitting there thinking well it's either Milwaukee for $100M or NY for $140M and he could sign before any other teams make a move.

But the Dodgers would be the best fit for him.

Who knows what's going on behind the scenes. Not every team announces every move like the Yankees do :)

I think making an offer to anyone for less money than someone else has already put out there is a waste of time.

The Yankees didn't announce it. Every team has leaks and the offer was leaked for over half a day before the Yankees decided to officially post it on Yankees.com. Figure if it's news why not scoop everyone with the official story. I'm sure things are going on behind the scenes but if you are a team you knew he was going to be a free agent for months so you are telling me their management is just now trying to come up with figures for a potential deal.

Unless you're the Angels or Dodgers and know that CC would prefer playing for you and if you can get close to the Yankee's offer, he might just take it.

I have no idea what's going on. I just think there is A LOT more activity than is being reported.

Exactly. I think the other teams had offers ready to make a few weeks ago but the Yanks went and put theirs out first and it blew the other ones away so the teams were not going to make an inferior offer so they are probably waiting for the Yankees to pull their offer or for CC to publicly tell the Yankees no. If either of those happens then watch for other teams to make official offers.

$20 million extra goes a long way to making a good fit...

In this day and age though a lot of the behind the scenes stuff gets leaked. It is rare a trade or signing happens where it catches us off guard anymore because there is always some "anonymous source with information on the negotiations" who leaks the story to the media. This results in us knowing a player is going somewhere 3 days before it is officially announced. The media has leaked what teams are talking to who but the fact that they haven't given any concrete numbers leads me to believe it is all just in the talking stages and that no offers have been made besides the Brewers initial offer and the Yankees current one.
