Penn State silent on Paterno's future

It seems clear the Penn State administration wanted Joe Paterno out after this season. President Graham Spanier and athletic director Tim Curley wouldn't give him a contract extension in the summer even though he was in the final year of his deal. They wouldn't even hint publicly that he would return in 2009, saying they would discuss his future after the season. Taking that a step further, it also seems clear Spanier and Curley want a total break from the Paterno era. Why else haven't they named longtime defensive coordinator Tom Bradley as Paterno's replacement-in-waiting? Naming such replacements has become a trend in college athletics -- Texas was the latest football power to do it when it said defensive coordinator Will Muschamp would take over for Mack Brown when the time came. That Penn State hasn't done that for Bradley doesn't say much for its long-term plans for him. The silence from Spanier and Curley about Paterno's future -- even now after Penn State's marvelous season -- remains deafening.

There isn't anything that needs to be said. Joe wants to come back for 2009, he'll be back for 2009.

November 25, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Penn State - Big Ten Champs 2 of the last 4 years.

November 25, 2008  08:27 AM ET

IMHO If they dont bring Joe back there will be riots in the streets.

November 25, 2008  08:29 AM ET

JoePa for President in 2012.

November 25, 2008  08:37 AM ET

1) Joe will be back if he wants, after an 11-1 season and winning the Big 10, the boosters would not allow it otherwise.

2) Who cares if "other" schools pre-name a successor. PSU has never done it before, so why would them not doing it now be news?

3) When Joe goes, it will be an end to an era we'll never have again - a coach staying his entire career at a single college. He deserves to go on his own terms. Period.

November 25, 2008  08:37 AM ET

Since when has Penn State followed national trends? Just because they havent publicly declared Bradley as Joe's eventual replacement doesn't mean that they wont hire him.

November 25, 2008  08:43 AM ET

All this speculation for nothing. He will be back.

November 25, 2008  09:52 AM ET

What is it with athletic administrations these days? Where in the hell do they find these people? Sign him already. Are these pinheads related to the pooch $crewers at ND?

...unless the next press release says, Welcome to Happy Valley Bill Cowher!

They've already filled their one riot per year quota in State College.

Well they just don't know how to handle it, FDR was president when they had to do their last coaching search.

Joe pa is going to die on the field!!! Which he deserves to do!!!

November 25, 2008  11:33 AM ET

This competition between Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden is ridiculous! Neither will leave until the other makes the first move...unless, of course, one of them just cannot win games anymore. Paterno sees an opportunity for a lot more W's!

Bradley's doing a hell of a job isn't he.

Sure, it makes sense that the administration at PSU wants Paterno out. Winningest coach of all time, given millions to the school, is the face of the University, coming off a highly successful season, and is working for one fifth as much a high profile replacement would cost.

Send the bum packing!!

November 25, 2008  12:19 PM ET

Quite honestly one of the dumbest articles ever. Might as well say that Tom Bradely has been "waiting" for over 36 years to be the head coach.

I think we should fire Bradley. He "only" produced a top 10 defense with the rash of injuries and off the field problems.

Let us not forget, Penn State has lost the NC race by last second scores in 04' and 08'. Yes yes, horseshoes, hand gernades, and crap fights I know. Besides the Morelli "incident" the last 2 years, Penn State has been pretty damn good. Even with said Morelli throwing it into row H.

Yes we know this timeless bash against two of the best coaches ever. Great. Where was your USC pays it players or FSU Criminoles or OSU sucks lines? Hell, why not go back to the Lawerance Phillips days at Nebraska?

Do you really believe that after the game, late Saturday nights after each team has played, that Paterno and Bowden call each other up and play the "you first" chess game? Really?

If you really need to bash a coach for "sticking around", then shot some jabs at South Bend. That is a good example of a coach not leaving when he should.

He is at the Alzheimers age, when they start to go at his age it happens fast. All you faithful fans need to be ready for the end, it is near.

What competition? Bobby Bowden is thirty plus victories behind Joe.
