Yzerman as new Senators GM?

08:28 AM ET 11.25 | The Senators' options, broadly defined, are clear. The first - the one likely to be chosen - is to patch and paste through trades in a desperate attempt to stumble into the playoffs again in order to sell seats in the Canadian market with the smallest season-ticket base. The second is to blow up the team, as the Maple Leafs are doing, in the knowledge that this Senators team, even an improved version of it, will never again threaten for the Stanley Cup. That window for this group is shut, and every honest fan knows it. The start-again strategy would require a new general manager. One intriguing choice would be Steve Yzerman, who played some hockey before turning professional in Ottawa and is popular in the city.

This will never happen. Stevie has to much love for Detroit, the system, and the Ilitch's. The Wings organization has been his family ever since he was drafted in 1983 by the Ilitch's.

Even though Stevie Y has been with the Wings forever, in reality he's never seen if the grass is in fact greener on the other side of the fence. I used to live in Ottawa and people have talked about Yzerman coming back to Ottawa since they got their expansion team.

It's hard to imagine Stevie Y as anything but a Wing. He's a legend, he revived the Dead Things.

I remember they were very close to dealing him to the Sens, thinking he was done and they had Fedorov to replace him (mid 90's, before the cup runs).
The one thing he has going for him is a great learning environment. Would he suceed if he went off on his own without the Det. support staff?

It all depends on how long Holland wants to keep his post. Yzerman, like any of us, would have to think about his career first and foremost... and if this post was offered, in his former hometown, in a hockey-mad market, who could blame him for accepting?

I am a die hard Wings fan and I don't have a huge problem with this. Like someone said, a lot will depend on what Ken Holland wants to do. From what he's been doing since he retired, it'd be hard to imagine that Stevie will be content to be the GM behind Holland for much longer. If he is offered the job with the Sens and he takes it, I wish him nothing but success.

It wouldn't surprise me all that much, but it would be hard to imagine Stevie Y anywhere but Detroit.

Hilarious and well put!! Yzerman is a smart man and wont go reconstruct a team from the bottom up. Instead, he will take a team at the top and continue to keep them their *Clears throat... Red Wings*

It's all been said already.
I just can't figure why he'd want to go there if he was inclined.

I'd say that sums it up! Why would he leave Detroit? Why? I'll tell you! It's the same reason Lindstrom left! Wait............Lindstrom Never left Detroit and neither will Stevie Y and that's because Detroit is one of the last N.H.L Teams that has the word FAMILY attached to it and Stevie has too much class to run out on his family!

While I don't see Stevie Y leaving (or don't want to see it), I would say the Illitch family would endorse any decision for Mr Yzerman would make be it move to another team or stay in Detroit.
