Holtz: Irish should be better in '09
What in the name of Lou Holtz has become of the once-fabled Notre Dame football program? Notre Dame has not won a national title since 1988, when Holtz coached the Fighting Irish to a 12-0 season. Perhaps expectations for a perennial contender are unrealistic in this era of college football parity. Yet Holtz says the task should be easier than it was when he coached in South Bend."I don't think there is any reason Notre Dame cannot win the national championship," Holtz said before watching coach Charlie Weis' Irish lose 24-23 to Syracuse on Saturday. "I hope that Charlie Weis will bring them to the national championship level. They should be a lot better next year because [the nucleus] is coming back for a third year," Holtz said.

You understood the words out of Lou's mouth. Wow. Good for you guys. I was cleaning the saliva off the inside of my TV screen after he was done spitting his words this weekend.

They'll go to a weedeater bowl, beat up some third tier schmuck team, and the media will announce "they're back!!!!!!!!" Next year, pre-season top 5.

Or they will go to the toilet bowl, get smoked by some some 3rd tier team and still get a top 10 pre-season ranking

You know things are bad at ND when even Lispin' Lou is questioning Weis' ability to coach his beloved ND.

Obviously the Syracuse loss has begged the question as regards Charlie and his coaching staff. ND is woefully lacking in so many areas it will be difficult for them to turn anything around in the near term. One more year with the same team and coaches in place will not make a measurable difference against the teams on their schedule let alone the premier college football programs. Getting the top tier kids to South Bend would not be an issue if Cahrlie and staff presented a credible front in the recruiting wars which they do not presently. I agree with Lou that a return to the top tier is doable at ND but not with their current lineup.

Geez! That's just not right. Make fun of him all you want but he loves notre dame football. I do disagree with what he said though, I don't think that it is easier to be coach there than when he did back in the day. With notre dame's high academic standards that eliminates alot of potential recruits. Also if you aren't recruiting out of Texas, Florida, or California you are missing out on like 75% of the nations most talented players. I wish notre dame was good again, that way it would be exciting to watch them lose! I don't like cfb when notre dame AND michigan are terrible! Someone bring back the historic programs!!! Oh and next week UT is going to pass notre dame in all time wins this Friday!

Lou Holtz has a speech impediment....but it has nothing to do this his lisp. It is more based on the illogical banter that spews from his pie-hole every week.

Theoretically, Notre Dame should be better. Those recruits are a year older. I'm going to side with Coach Lou on this one.

Great, the nucleus from a 9-14 team for the past two years is coming back for a third. Good call Lou, smells like a national title.

All programs are destined to fall occasionally. Did you ever think A & M would be as bad as they are? What about Miami? Nebraska? Tennessee? It wasn't that many years ago that USC was mid-tier as well. Things will turn around for ND eventually....but hopefully not too soon....I am enjoying this a little.

So after 4 years Weis "should" finally have figured out how to get back to winning? Let's hope so because ND surely bet the house on a guy who so far has only helped ND get worse. Maybe the US should bail ND out because it's too big to fail?

Or at least too big to fail in their own mind....although, for the most part, ND fans have been pretty gracious in admitting they aren't good this year (not that they really have any other argument, but it has never stopped them in the past).
I am already looking forward to the ND-UM game next year so we can see where both programs are at. Unfortunately, a close game will only tell us that they are both probably pretty average.

So long as that poser Jimmy C. is at quarterback the Irish will not get better.
