Next fired coach could be...

Is there anyone who doesn't want Sam Mitchell fired right now? Maybe Bryan Colangelo, but you get the sense that could change at any moment. I've got no personal stake in him staying or going. But is coaching really the problem here? Jose Calderon, never a great ball-stopper, is even a step slower because of a hamstring problem that I think is a little worse than he's let on. Point guards -- Devin Harris on Friday, Rajon Rondo on Sunday -- are abusing him him, attacking the basket at will. Defence are designed to prevent some dribble penetration with help. If you have to do it on every play things break down. Anthony Parker has gotten older in the course of the summer, it seems. He's a pro, he takes care of his body, he's healthy, as far as I know. But he is being attacked by stronger and quicker players every night. I'm not sure how coaching fixes this. Jermaine O'Neal was just on the cusp of getting his game back when he got hurt on Friday. It was ridiculous that he played on Sunday. And he may talk bravely about being ready Wednesday, but unless he's 100 per cent, how long will it take him to play with abandon on a knee he quite reasonably can't trust just now?

Fire everybody. Next, Atlanta coach. Next, Memphis coach. Next, Clippers coach. Next, Nets coach. Next, Sixers coach. I forgot about the Kings coach.

Sam Mitchell. Toronto has something good building there but it could use a change of leadership.

I cannot remember when Jermaine O'Neal had a full healthy season. NBA coaching, you have a weak team like the Thunder and you lose they fire you. So you know if they sign freeagents like O'Neal you better show improvement or put that house up for sale.

I agree- but in this case they really need to give the oneal/bosh tandem a little more time together before they change anything....I mean they are basically 500- not 1 & 10

the Raptors' problems can all be traced back to Colangelo taking a team with one player - Chris Bosh, and the first overall pick as its only assets, then spending that pick on a player (Bargnani) whose only possible position is the exact same one as the franchise player. Depth is great, but as a general rule you shouldn't try and get your two best players both playing the same position (duh!). Bargnani ending up sucking also hurt

November 25, 2008  09:31 AM ET

It wasn't Sam who decided to wager the future on Jermaine O'Neal. I've got one thing to say...I told you. Mitchell isn't the only one that should be fired.

November 25, 2008  09:35 AM ET

I think Colangelo is a biggerr problem than Mitchell. His coaching and decision making hasn't been too bad. He has no horses.

November 25, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Calderon is good, just not that athletic.

November 25, 2008  10:13 AM ET

he should be fired.. Sam is a good motivator but a horrible X's and O's guy... if anyone actually watches the Raptors you would know what i'm talking about.. the game against new jersey was a prime example of him being out coached... vince carter torched them on plays down the stretch were a simple switch in stead of bodying up would have saficed.. i think it's time to go out and get a real coach with big game experience.. Van Gundy? Silas? i dunno i think they would both be better for this team then Sam

November 25, 2008  10:38 AM ET

would be a mistake to fire Sam.
Raptors had a bad start but that has to do with injuries, not with coaching.
Fiering the coach would only make things worse.. If Players get healthy angain things will turn out fine for the Raps. People need to be a lit more patient !

November 25, 2008  10:53 AM ET

Raptors fans have been patient with Mitchell for 4 years. The man cannot coach (save to yell and an have amusing post-game press conferences). He has no knowledge of the defensive end. Yeah, Calderon is going to get beat by exceptionally quick PGs like Harris but defense is more than one-on-one. The bottom line is that a good coach can coach up those aspects where the player is deficient. Mitchell doesn't do that so he needs to go.

Coach SMitch's time has come! Now, he's been exposed. Jerry Sloan should've won COY that year! Their offence is too predictable, they don't have any slashers that will go to the line, they could've had Roy but I think it was more of a marketing campaign for the multi-cutural Toronto BARG-nani (as he's called in 2K9) was easier to market in Toronto. They need to do a big revamping starting with their wing players AP, Moon, Kapono, Graham. Boston got lucky last season adding Garnett and Allen, so we don't expect that in Toronto, but at least well-established NBA calibre players and Euro/Minor Fairytale hopefuls!

November 25, 2008  11:02 AM ET

I mean no more Euro/Minor league fairyale hopefuls!

November 25, 2008  11:34 AM ET

There is nothing wrong with Sam. Its not his fault he has so many wet napkin soft Euros on his team. The only tough player they have cant play more than 15 games without missing 5. Colangelo built a similar soft team in Phoenix, and look at what happened there. Those soft euros play a good entertaining style, but they never win. A team full of euros is like having the Harlem Globetrotters. You will go home entertained, you will win a few games. But the minute a team punches them in the mouth, they will not punch back.

November 25, 2008  11:55 AM ET

their current standing does not come as a surprise. this team is overrated... they have solid players in bosh and calderon (though they are not elite stars) at center and pg but the rest of the positions are filled with mediocre players.... they should trade bargnani to the bobcats for gerald wallace and a 1st round pick

November 25, 2008  12:07 PM ET

I guess he could be the next fired coach. The next fired coach should be Randy Wittman though.
Kevin McHale should go to, but that goes w/o saying.

partially agree-
- whether barg should've been a lottery pick is irrelevant now
he's not bad- not great- but he's gotten better

Their issue as I've said in the past- similar to orlando
is they are missing 2 guards....
Bosh is playing well & Oneal is starting to get his game back
they don't need Wallace- another front court player.

November 25, 2008  12:26 PM ET

The Raps have Bosh, Calderon and Bargnani to build with. O'Neill is never going to get 100% healthy again, so his expiring contract is going to add leverage for Colangelo to sign another player to compliment Bosh. This team needs some serious defensive help and a change of coach will happen. The only reason Colangelo couldn't hire his won guy is that Mitchell just won Coach of the Year, it would have been disastrous PR move. Colangelo will bring in his own man after this season, and look to sign some bigger bodies to help on the defensive side of the ball.
