Another Tennessee recruit de-commits

Tennessee commitment David Oku, who is ranked by some recruiting sites as the nation's No. 1 all-purpose running back, has reopened his recruiting. The reason involves the recent firing of UT Coach Phillip Fulmer and the future of the program, he said. Before committing to UT in October, the four-star prospect narrowed his list to Clemson, Florida State, Michigan, Louisville, Nebraska and the Vols. Oku, who is from Oklahoma, said he has two official visits remaining. "I'm looking at (coaches') job security for my next school," Oku said. UT also recently lost a commitment from three-star safety D.J. Swearinger, who pulled his commitment and opted for South Carolina instead.

David, I'd suggest Ok State but since we're stacked at RB it probably be best to go to OU or one of your other choices. Best wishes though.

Is it me or does Fulmer kinda resemble the Palmero in the Senate look pointing that finger?

November 25, 2008  08:36 AM ET

I read that Oku was pretty high on Michigan at one point and if this kid say hes looking at job security for the next coach, that pretty much leaves 2 schools in the running. Michigan and Nebraska.

November 25, 2008  08:47 AM ET

He could play early at Michigan or Nebraska but my guess is that he would go to Nebraska where he would have less competition for a shot at the field.

Man you guys must not follow recruiting too well... rhymeister... OK St. and OU were already eliminated by Oku. He doesnt want to stay in state anywyas. UofM_man.... Michigan was never in Oku's top three according to Rivals. Not sure where you read he was high on them but im assuming maybe Scouts, Inc. but they are nowhere near the credibility level of Rivals with the info... and last but not least looking for job security leaves Michigan and Nebraska? What about FSU?? Im pretty sure Jimbo isnt going anywhere for a long time with the Head Coah in Waiting contract we gave him. Whereas if RichRod doesnt bring his recruits in and get his offense established in Ann Arbor (which I think he will by the way) hes not gonna be able to suffer many more seasons liek this one and I dont even know what to say about Nebraska...

You do make some good points there....I do think there will be some trickle effect once Bowden leaves though. I mean the mans an icon and most kids just commit to play for him! Even when Bowden leaves there are some BIG shoes to fill and Fisher will be in his shawdow for years to come. Leaves some uncertainty there. I guest realistically FSU still has a shot to land Oku, which i think Oku would fit nicely in FSU offensive scheme. If you read what rivals says i would say you read to much into the media. Rivals may give up to date information but they don't know what is going on in a recruits/players head. A lot of the times they make assumptions.

If he's looking at coaches with job security, he should look at Notre Lame. It would appear that they have named a coach for life.

Notre Lame? UcheaT? who do you think you are skip bayless. no one finds it funny on 1st & 10 and no one finds it funny here.

he would have looked good in knoxville, but UT will survive. i am sure whoever UT gets as their next coach will bring some of his recruits with him to knoxville, and some of fulmers guys will stay if they like the new guy. UT won't have a top ten class but i suspect they will still have a good haul.

November 25, 2008  10:46 AM ET

David has not de-committed. He says as long as Tennessee does not bring in a spread offense he is all vol! Per Vol Quest.com

November 25, 2008  10:47 AM ET

David is still a vol per volquest.com. States that he intends to sign as long as the new coach does not bring in the SPREAD offense. Says everything as been blown out of proportion but is still a vol!

Figured you as a cold pizza watching, panty wearing kind of sport fan. Thanks for the confirmation.

Yeah, Michigan is a plan. If you are uncertain if you are going to go to a bowl in the next four years, Michigan is your place.

November 25, 2008  11:37 AM ET

If he comes to UM, which i highly douby, he will get plenty of pt, Mcguffie is probably gone and minor will be a senior, leaving shaw to battle for carries with. Sounds like he isnt a spread rb though. His best bet is going to FSU right now(who knows if UM is gonna come around in the next couple years).

Anywhere this kid goes theres no certainty hes going to a bowl game

November 25, 2008  01:18 PM ET

UT is going to need some time to rebuild. Don't be like the Notre Lame fans and start throwing ice at your coach when he loses next year (although Weis deserved it).

November 25, 2008  01:26 PM ET

I knew that this was going to happen and there will be more Tenn recruits to follow. OU and Ok St. looked at this guy and took a pass, Ok St. is not a good fit and has a few RBs already on-board that look pretty good. He would have to red-shirt as a freshman and not be a starter at OU until maybe his Jr. or Sr. year at best, if even then and may have to change positions to get to play at all, so Oklahoma is out. That leaves Nebraska as the only team on that list that he might play and be noticed. No school can guarantee a coach will be there in 3 years from now.

November 25, 2008  01:35 PM ET

god I hope UT doesn't bring in that spread crap like everybody else. They just need to recommit to the running game, which they abandoned for most of the year, and they'll be fine. Pro set, that's still where it's at. Get you some big uglies up front and ram it down their throat.

The spread looks pretty, but if you want to be an NFL player, keep it in a pro set.

Anyway, about this recruit, I hope he decides to come back. Tennessee is still going to be Tennessee and they will be back on the saddle in a year or two, maybe not winning 10+ games, but they'll be back to respectable in a few years.

hmmm. people who watch cold pizza, i mean 1st & 10, wear panties? please enlighten me on the logic that allowed you to make that jump. 2nd, you have thought of me wearing women's under wear, creepy.

Yeah.. good idea so he can sit and learn behind Murray and Madu for a while.

This UT job is a total mess. I guess some coordinator somewhere will take the jack for a few years (a la Chuck Long) and try to win the lottery. But anyone with a good gig should just pass on this one.
