Jets guard madder than ever

Ten days ago, Jets guard Pete Kendall went public with his unhappiness over his contract situation, demanding to be released or traded. His feelings haven't subsided. If anything, he's madder than ever. Beyond the money issues, Kendall is steamed by what he perceives as a "good cop, bad cop" smear campaign being waged by the Jets,

You're 1 year into a multi-year deal. You want more money? Tough. Out of all parties involved, Kendall is the only one who looks bad. If you didnt like what you were being paid, then you should've asked for more money BEFORE signing. Constantly running the to media to cry about getting treated unfairly just makes you look like a spoiled kid.

June 24, 2007  10:19 AM ET

This guy is a ****. Play your one year deal, THEN start your demands. Now this guy is just looking like a moron.

June 24, 2007  10:36 AM ET

They probally can't trade him because nobody wants him.

June 24, 2007  11:08 AM ET

I totally agree w/ you Buckeye. Kendall looks like a complete BRAT.

June 24, 2007  11:22 AM ET

I can understand why Steelers OG Alan Faneca is acting like he is (though I still don't like how he is acting). He has given years of service to the Steelers, made six consecutive pro-bowls,threw the block in Parker's Super Bowl record TD run that sprung him, been a team captain forever and a day,and has been a team leader. So now, with one year left on his deal,he wants a new contract so he'll have security and stay a Steeler for life.

What has this Kendall guy ever done but be a part of an offensive line that let Pennington get thrown around like a rag doll?Has he ever even made a Pro Bowl? The Jets o-line was better last year because of D'Brickshaw Fergusen and Nick Mangold.

This reminds me of when TO wanted a new deal a year into his Eagles contract. If you don't like what your being offered, don't sign the contract.Make them pay you more or let you walk to a team that will pay you more.

When you whine about your contract after only one year, that turns most teams off and nobody will want to give up a draft pick and/or player to get you.

June 24, 2007  11:36 AM ET

Seriously Kendall......do you have any cheese to go with that whine? Shape up or ship out, dude. I doubt many will care.

June 24, 2007  11:44 AM ET

I don't blame team mgt. one bit. If I was an NFL owner I too would smear a punk who was trying to unwind a contract that he signed under his own free will.

June 24, 2007  01:31 PM ET

send him to miami..

June 24, 2007  02:00 PM ET

You know they should place clauses in contracts that if after a year or so that a player does things like this that they have to forfeit a LARGE portion of their bonus and pay then and only then should they get the offer to be traded.

June 24, 2007  02:21 PM ET

There must be a good reason a clause like that is not already in place. This kind of thing happens way too often with many teams.

June 24, 2007  02:31 PM ET

he would be good trade bait

June 24, 2007  07:51 PM ET

What the hell am I missing here? You and your employer agree on a contract based on your previous performance and your future expectations.

So you meet those expectations the first year and now you want to re-negotiate the terms upwards? That's not the deal folks. As said above, if you didn't like the contract - don't sign and see what someone else will pay.

This isn't even Economics 101.

June 24, 2007  08:17 PM ET

I agree with all of you about honouring contracts. In pro sports, it seems like we hear this same story every day. Only one thing to add, and many of you probably already know, but what the heck... The NFL is at a great advantage due to the fact that contracts can be terminated anytime, leaving players without money their teams signed to pay them. Players are bought out at a fraction of their contracts worth. Many players have been burned by losing contracts when a team decides to cut them for whatever reason. Now, I do not like these guys who continually hold teams for ransom. I am just saying that guys in the NFL, above other team sports, may want to make sure their pockets are lined plenty before winding up in the situation mentioned.

June 25, 2007  01:18 AM ET

nobody cares......pete

see you in a couple months for a slappin

June 25, 2007  02:02 AM ET

REAL STORY IS THAT HE TOOK A PAY CUT LAST YEAR TO HELP THE JETS WITH THE SALARY CAP NOW THAT THE JETS ARE SO MUCH UNDER THE CAP HE WAS JUST ASKING FOR SOME OF THAT MONEY BACK. IF IT WAS ME I WOULD MAKE HIM HAPPY FOR ONE HE IS THEIR MOST DEPENDABLE LINEMAN AND SECOND SOMETHING LIKE THIS DOESNT MAKE THE JETS LOOK GOOD TO OTHER PLAYERS (FREE AGENTS) AND KEEP THEM FROM WANTING TO COME HERE

June 25, 2007  02:46 AM ET

There is no honor in contracts in the NFL. Teams can easily release players after an injury or a bad year and those players often recieve little to compensation. Although I hate to read about all these millionares complaining about money, they never know when it is going to be their last season so it makes sense to get all the money they can. Look at all these offensive lineman that are retired and struggling to get the necessary health care for all the tramatic injuries there brains have sustained over the course of their NFL career. Not saying that Kendall is right in this situation just that NFL teams often don't honor contracts so why should the players?

June 25, 2007  09:10 AM ET

Contracts in the NFL are meaningless.

Teams think nothing of requesting a player "re-work" a contract when it suits their purpose. They also think nothing of terminating a contract then re-signing the player to a lower one, again, when it suits their purpose.

Kendall will be tossed out the window like a used tissue at a drive-in theater when they are done with him. All he is doing is applying the same business rules to the Jets that they apply to players every year.

Hate the game, don't hate the playas.........

June 25, 2007  09:31 AM ET

Good point. He did take a pay cut to help the Jets get under the cap. The only problem is that he signed the contract. Just like Chad Pennington did with his contract. Do you hear Chad making noise to get another contract with more $? No. He knows the reality of his situation. He just has to play hard and do his best until the Jets kick him to the curb. Unfortunately for all players, the only way they can rework any type of deal is to make noise like this and hold out. The owners have players over a barrel as everyone has mentioned above. Players have little recourse when it comes to contract negotiaions. Kendall should have asked to be traded instead of taking the pay cut.

June 25, 2007  09:42 AM ET

Kendall can go f himself. You got money, you are just trying to worm out some extra cash and hold the Jets hostage with the NFLPA. Go squel you pig rat and watch how fast you get dropped...

June 25, 2007  10:24 AM ET

I agree with ghostofthebabe, NFL contracts have all the value of used toilet paper. The Jets shouldn't be complaining either because they do what they want when it suits their purposes...just like EVERY NFL team. These players cry everytime they percieve themselves to be underpaid. Why help the Jets get under the cap one minute then whine the next? He shouldn't have taken a cut if it was that big of a deal.
