Mets reach out to K-Rod, Fuentes

Mets GM Omar Minaya began reaching out to the agents for free-agent closers Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes, SI.com has learned. The Mets are intent on landing an elite closer after their bullpen was the main culprit in their second straight September disappointment. It is believed Rodriguez is favored slightly over Fuentes, but they consider either pitcher an excellent candidate to take injured closer Billy Wagner's spot. The Mets seem willing to consider Kerry Wood, as well, but have concerns about his past health issues.

They have concerns about Kerry Wood's past health issues, but not concerns that arguably the worst closer on the market(K-Rod) will also be the most expensive one based on a meaningless inflated statistic?

what are you talking about?????
'worst closer on the market'....?????

- I'm not saying he's Mariano (obviously)- but you have
no idea what you are talking about.....his velocity may be
down- but he has SEVERAL out pitches. He's far from
bad, mediocre or average....
He is a GOOD major league closer. PERIOD

November 26, 2008  08:30 AM ET

I didn't say he wasn't good. Just not as good as Woods or Fuentes or Hoffman. Maybe there's a fifth closer on the market I'm not thinking of, in which case he could be the second worst closer on the market.

Closers as a whole are overrated.

Absolutely agree that Mariano Rivera is completely overrated and in no way makes the game a moot point when he's out there with a lead.

He's right, at least how saves are measured. The art of closing a close game is still an art, and one that is amazingly important (see M Rivera), but closers as the hyper-specialized, coddled, over-inflated thigns that they are now, are not really as useful as you might think.

And yeah, saying "The Mets seem willing to consider Kerry Wood, as well, but have concerns about his past health issues" is like saying you are thinking about becoming a football fan and rooting for Detroit, you are just worried about all the losing they do in the last 20 years.

you called him 'arguably the worst closer on the market'
- how did I mis-read that?
5th closer on the market ? I don't think so.....

- he's not perfect- 1 inning guy- but he is a QUALITY closer
and AMONGST the top ten closers in the game.
and he's ONLY 26 (reportedly).
hoffman is like 100, woods is CHRONICALLY hurt
and fuentes- the other top closer on the market is OVER 30

Krod IS the best closer on the market currently. Period.
and some team - probably the mets- WILL pay - likely 13 mil
for 4 years.....

November 26, 2008  10:51 AM ET

You didn't misread that he is arguably the worst closer on the market.

And you're absolutely right. He is certainly one of the top ten best closers in the league.

It just so happens that three of those people ahead of him on that top ten list are also free agents this year.

Nice.... especially when you finish out of the playoffs by one or two games every year.... I'm sure an extra 3-5 saves would mean nothing.....

lol....who?

hoffman ?- SD didn't want him for PEANUTS
Fuentes ? - we could argue on this one....
your fascination with wood ?
- he had ONE successful season as a closer....
AND his era was over 3 this year...FOR A CLOSER
he is NOT better than Krod

November 26, 2008  12:16 PM ET

John Mozeliak??? Where are you John Mozeliak???? Since you're the Cards GM, I thought I should tell you that you desperately need bullpen help.....you know.....30+ blown saves last year and all. Anyone talking to Fuentes should be in line behind you.......

hello?

If the Mets want to throw that NY $$ at him and he takes it so be it. He will be a bust from here on out in his career. He was definately over used this past season. Remember Thigpen's career was never the same after the year he set the record. Once K-Rod starts to blow saves in NY and the pressure of the NY media and fan base starts to snow ball on him it will just get worse.

he may or may not be a bust....
And NY fans will certainly boo if he pitches badly....
but how exactly was he 'overused' ??

he pitched in LESS than 70 innings

I'm with you on this one JGB. Fuentes couldn't even keep his spot as closer in Colorado. He became the set up guy for a good stretch. Everyone is SEPECULATING that K-Rod MIGHT be a threat to break down physically whereas Wood can't stay healthy to save his life.

fuentes is 36...the mets need to trade for Soria from the royals...dat dude is nasty! if not they need to get krod and trade with the rockies for huston street 2 be the set up man...either way heilman and schoenweis need to go...u get a couple more solid relievers and boom! as john madden would say...lol the bullpen is fixed...

The Angels had a very deep bullpen in 2008. K-Rod never pitched more than one inning and no more than two consecutive nights. Scioscia is a very good manager and former catcher. He used and monitored him very wisely. As an Angels fan, I am sad to see him leave. But because of our deep pen and his asking price, he was expendable.

The comment about the Thigpen burnout and his violent windup is all speculation. Up to this point, he have been reliable and durable with no major injuries. Since they rely on their shoulders and arms so much...ALL PITCHERS are a risk. Just part of the business.

I don't think Fuentes is that old. I believe he is 33
